"VEGETABLE GARDENING" (for fun and nutrition)

Hi RR420,
Corn usually finishes around 20 days past the first show of the silk. Once the silk has dried INTO the husk, do a tester and peel it back. Not all corn will finish the same so dont harvest the whole crop at once....

actually i believe it's due to each strain being slightly different.

those 2 tomatoes are on 2 seperate plants. they were the first tomato on the plants, and the largest of them all, they were really growing fast then. all the rest are perfectly shaped. this only happened on the brandywines.

i was just showing a tomato that might tip the scale @ 4# maybe....

I don't want to seem cheap but doesn't anybody else just use seeds from household fruits and veggies. I can't remember the last time I actually bought a pack of seeds but I can see why one would. Some varieties wouldn't be sold at most grocery stores or even organic markets. I think farmers market events like the ones we have in most cities through SoCal would be the perfect place to get seeds. For the past few years I would just go to the grocery store and pick up one of whatever I wanted. Most fruits and veggies have TONS of seeds inside. Over the years I've gotten Celebrity, Cherry, Yellow Plum, and Roma tomatoes...jalepenos, habeneros, and bell peppers both green and orange...and eggplants (I believe Japanese or asian something or another). I would think pretty much anything could be used. I tend to just clone over and over after that. I've had my cherry tomato variety for over 5 years! There are certain hybrids however I know I will have to shell out the $ for a package of. seeds. Sugar Snack is definately one of them. Good luck with your peppers MK. Gotta love making your own salsa with all organic and FRESH veggies from your garden. Awesome!

since we are posting links to seed sites for veggies and whatnot, here's the one i like looking at lately, thinking about ordering seeds earlier on this year also, instead of waiting for them close to germ time.

rare, exotic, and unusual plants

anyhow - you are correct kushedout - one doesnt' need to buy anyseeds. it's just nice. it's like, do i grow from bagseed or order some beans? well, kinda like that. man i'm stoned. :joint:

Hi IamHigh,
Yes that is a hornworm. Those white cotton looking things are eggs from paracitic wasps. They lay their eggs on the worms back and the young wasps feed off the worm until they are old enuff to fly and hunt on their own. It will kill the worm. If you see a worm with the eggs you should leave it alone. Those wasps are a good thing to have around.

wow thats some crazy stuff. nature has some crazy ways of doing things, awesome none the less. Cant wait till i get my own home and can start a big backyard garden.. one day .. one day.

I have never seen the wasp cacoons on any tomatoe hornworms around here but I would gladly welcome them. My problem with letting one live, is all the damage the worm would do before the damn cacoons hatch!

Munch Munch Munch is all they do. well, crap. They crap too. Which is the easiest way to find them, look for the black round droppings on the leaves and stems below them.

artie - looks alright to me. will taste better than store bought. soil has a lot to do with things. i cheated and used mg tomato food, and hydro bloom food for everything else, and when i planted them to begin with, i dug a hole, stuck them in with mg veggie soil.

iamhigh - i throw them out in the road for the birds, they seem to like them.

Ordinary Joe - i had a hard time leaving them on there at first also, but after watching one closely, once they have those white cacoons on them, they don't eat anything, or move much for that matter. it's pretty much there death certificate. and i do see all the little wasps hanging around on mater plants now.

my g/f does the worm hunting, she sees them better than i. first find the poop, then the stems, and there they are! like u said.

had a mountain fresh tomatoes, going to try them next year, great tomato. the hard rocks i have are hard as a rock, duh, wtf am i going to do with these things?

Some pics of my little outdoor grow

First up is my azalea that I statred bonsai training over 3 years ago. This plant is actually a cut of a cut, etc. of an 18 year old azalea bush from the house I grew up in. It took lots of time to get her to finally flower :)

Look at the difference pot size makes. These were both from a 6 pack of Bell pepper plants that were all pretty much the same size. The one in the 2 gallon pot has more leaves, the fruits are already getting big, and look healthier overall. Next to the larger green pepper is my miniature pink rose BUSH. Took a few years of pruning and training to finally get her to bush out like that but it's worth it. Tons of very aromatic flowers throughout the plant.

Sweet Basil. This one's just started flowering and has started to really take off. 2 very nice cuttings waiting to be taken. Rockwool has just been placed in ph'd water to soak for a while to take these 2. The smell from her is unbelievable.

This is my 1x1 small patch o' dirt. Removed about 4 cu. ft. of used, god knows what's in it soil, and replaced with a fresh mix of Fox Farms Ocean Forest, peat moss, and perlite. I use this formula for all my outdoor plants and they all seem to love it. The potted green peppers are a little more sensetive however and seemed to not like the peat moss in the mix. I divided the area into 4 equal sections seperted by bricks I buried to be flush with the soil level. It looks great to be honest. The front left section has my japanese eggplant which has started to really pump out the eggplants, however has been under sever attack by spider mites. At first I started noticing little white flies on the leaves with small holes missing, sprayed with safer soap and they were gone. Well, came back from a trip out of town recently to find the plant completely ravaged by them. Webbing and mites everywhere and a few were started to leap over to my peppers. I'll be started to take care of the problem this coming weekend when I have time to able to do so. The front right section has my green peppers which I forgot to take pictures of sorry. The back left section has my new Yellow tomato plant which is growing very strong, very thick. Producing some nice medium sized tomatoes which are taking forever to mature and turn yellow. In the front right section I had a clone of my cherry tomato plant but it couldn't keep up with the yellow tomato plant and was being overpowered so I decided to transplant into a 2 gallon pot. I have since started to train a few of the Yellow tomato plant's branches to grow into the space left by the cherry. With lots of staking and tying I should get it to look seemless. Almost like there's only one plant right in the center. We'll see.

This is going to be my next project. The plant these these cuttings were taken from is one of my favorites and is an absolute SUPER STAR! She is currently sitting in a 5 gallon pot filled halfway with my usual soil mix and an extra layer of peat moss. Jasmines love the stuff and I highly recommend any Jasmine growers to add a 1/4 - 1/2'' of peat moss as a top soil. You won't regret it :) The plant has stretched to at least 20 feet tall. The shoots go all the way up the side of my house thanks to the handy tv cable I trained them onto. At first it was a way to get all the new shoots coming out to grow up and away from my tomato plant because they have special suckers that curl and grab onto everything and once they grab ont a plants leaves forget about it. Next thing I know this thing just kept climbing and climbing. In the spring time it blossoms the best smelling flowers on any species of plant IMVHO. Very beautiful star shaped white blossoms that are almost overpowering in smell. Everyone here has smelled Jasmine whether you know it or not lol. I plan to grow one out to the same size as my mom plant but in the front yard for everyone else to enjoy. The other smaller one I plan to start a bonsai project with and see where it takes me.

Here is my homemade hydro system lol. The plant really droops during the day and since I have a bad algea problem I'm assuming it's because the small pot is white and light is getting through. I'm sure it's the heat that's affecting the plant because at night the leaves open up and the plant looks like a million bucks. This was just something I tried out that cost a total of $.00 to make. All stuff from around the house, no pump nothing. I add trace amounts of nutes from time to time but other than that this plant has taken off from a plant half it's size in a matter of about 3 weeks. The roots have exploded from the primary pot and are now sitting directly in the water. Plan to do something more proffesional next time around lol

My DWC tomato plant has finally taken root in solution and the 4-5 I'm growing in soil are looking amazing, this is under a 70 hps security lamp.

I sowed some everbearing strawberry seeds en masse two days ago, I'm really hoping these guys germ. I'm thinking of growing a mother in dirt and then using the runners as cuttings to start a hydro experiment indoors.

well, i shoulda staked better, instead of 1x2's, shoulda used 2x2's instead.
storm knocked 2 over. 1 was my big brandywine. the other was just bent over at main stem, i staked it back up, and wrapped the stem, and crossed my fingers. i betcha it will make it. i guess 6ft tall and weighed down with rain and wind.......

here's what i got off it before i tossed her out. i'll have to set the green ones in the window. will get that big one weighed tonite spreading seed:)

on the bright side. still have another big brandywine plant that isnt getting the shit beat of her - she's in the middle

some hardrocks - they are hard, peelable, and taste exactly like V8
