Unofficial Coco Coir Growers Thread

Howdy.

I have wondered about coco for awhile. I’m into dirt. I might give it a whirl in a couple of pots next time.

I am about to get rid of about 50 2.5 to 5 gallon pots because I have fallen in love with grow bags. I only grow 16 to 20 plants at a time but I have over 100 pots of various sizes. I was hunting for the perfect size pots. It turns out the perfect pot was a bag. 
Do any of you do coco in grow bags? Any problems?

When you first get the coco if it should be soaked to get rid of sodium, can you soak the coco and squeeze out the water in the bathtub? Is it just a clear liquid or will it stain a tub?

I had a disaster with bubbling buckets 8 years ago or so and will NEVER do hydro again…I had to buy pot for fucks sake. Very embarrassing and expensive. If you screw something up with coco, is it as unforgiving as hydro? I like that dirt is very forgiving. I tend to get high when playing with the plants and, ah, shit happens, you know?

Good thread guys. It’s got me thinking. not always a good thing!

Later.

soaking fresh coco in a tub should not stain the tub - but if the tub was dirty before already the dirt will definetly get scrubbed into the coco...

I don't use Coco Specific nutes at all. I've gone thru 4 Cycles so far and never have had anything but good results. I Nutes I use thru-out are Advanced Nutes A+B, Mother Earth Tea, Pro-Silicate, Liquid Karma, Sensi Cal, EA/EN, Molasses, Big Bud & Overdrive.

Most that I use have more "N" than other Nute brands out there, along with Sensi Cal at 2-0-0. Which helps out with the Nitrates while the Coco already has higher values for Flowering.

As far as rinsing goes. Yes you can. Coco is completely sanitary by itself. No staining. Just let it dry and sweep it up. Shop Vac works great. Not too sure on Growing bags. but if they drain easily then, No Problem! A lot more forgiving than Hydro and very protective of roots. Has good PH buffering, Water Retention, Higher "Cation" for better feeding. Why not try it, Side by Side?

I like the grow bags....they drain really really well....I line the bottom with a couple layers of Lava....

after further investgation....I learnt that the grow bags retain water but not nutrients, and that biobizz' coco was basically a sterile replacement for dirt, that works like dirt.

So you pour you nute solution in, and salt crystals fall out? Where did you hear or get this info?

from a growshop guy, advising me to use the blocks only with a dripping system.
seemingly nutes go away with the water, so the plants need more waterings and food

I have a Trainwwreck in week 3 of bloom...using nothing but Botanicare (PBP Bloom & Liquid Karma)...she is in a 1g bag....and looks better than my TW in DWC did....no yellowing (yet) and no deficiencies (yet)

What is your feeding schedule and system?

I ask because I have a 65/35 coco/lava mix and need to know if I'm overwatering or what.

Well, I have 3 in bloom, actually....(50/50 coco/perlite in 1g bags...)...and i have to feed every other day....I think I need to bump it up to once a day

The lava is just at the bottom of the bag for drainage and bacterial colonization (they love lava...and all that surface area)

Botanicare...PBP bloom, Liquid Karma, and Cannazyme

Just handwatering the 1g bags...run to waste

peace

The key to watering Coco is Consistency.

The roots in the Coco will adjust to your watering schedule. I water twice a night for 15 minutes with drip Emmiters. Run to waste is important.

Whats your Routine Tomatoes? Lets help ya out.

First time ever using Coco,
These are the e/f buckets like MrWags uses. I was doing a 4 times a day, with a 18/6 Lights schedule... but then I read people are doing 1 time a day flood.
Plants "seem" to be doing alright, but these are all new strain, so I have no idea what their growth rate is.
I have a couple oddballs that are doing the "praying" look, but the rest look fine.
I did take a couple out today of the buckets and swtiched those to all lava, so I can see if their is a difference. I didn't see as much root growth as I thought I would, but that coco sure seemed to drain really really well. Was a really nice consistency when I dumped the bucket. Not soaked and soppy.

Well to be honest I havn't seen anyone really use E & F with Coco. Does my Bruh Wags do it with Coco? If so I would say follow his example. The Man has come a long way and grows some great pot. Plus I dont see 4 times during 18/6 being bad at all. Its just one more watering than I do in 12/12. Being that you use Lava and 65% Coco it drains well. I'm from the keep the Coco a bit moist crowd. With such an easily drained mix how long are your Floods & Drains?

When things look fine. They usually are. What are you using for Nutes?

Ive have been using pbp soil @15-20ml per gallon,...cal mag @1.5-3ml per gallon(note:5 ml per g. of cal mag is higher than label claims!) liquid karma @ 10ml. per g.,....sweet @ 10ml. per g.,....pro tekt @ 1/2-1 tsp. per gallon,...sweet @ 10ml. per g.,...and sm-90 @ 3 ml. per g. for moisture penetration/wetting agent.....and have also been using .75ml per g. of pk-13/14(bramski's method) for weeks 3-6...

Ive had great results so far,...aside from the overdose of cal-mag untill I learned that 1.5=5 ml. in ppm....5ml. per g. seems ok if using RO water..
I water with a wand every 2-3 days (run to waste) and flush every 2 weeks to clear salt and nute buildup,......when I didnt flush my leaves were very dark green and crunchy....

That's looks lovely, HYDROJUNKIE

I ran out of Sweet (for bloom) and Cal-Mag plus (veg) :biglaugh: Anyways until i can buy more.....

I have been mixing my tap water (.2 EC - .3 EC) and mixing it with RO water (low TDS) at 50/50

After getting some Calcium from the tap water I add dissolved esalts (Sweet mostly derived from esalts) for MG....

I just hope it keeps working until I can get some more Botanicare additives....gotten lucky so far.....just using this technique combined with PBP pro and LK

HYDROJUNKIE I see you used Botanicare soil blend....certainly did the job for you....I am gonna stick with the hydro PBP for now but may try that.....

peace

yeah VT I liked the pbp soil because I was getting plenty of nitrogen from my additives and the higher phosphorous levels are needed when using coco....
Ive used PBP & LK all by themselves in the past and had no problems so you should be good...
you know what your doing vt,..

mixing tap and RO water to get the right EC?...lol
VT you grow plants like your in a lab,.....but then again your plants are always healthy as hell, so keep it up!

I'm going to do my next run with coco...got a bag of b'cuzz coir, and already have an almost full bottle of FloraNova Grow. The back of said bottle says that FN is suitable for a soilless medium...so I'd like to use the stuff if I don't have to shell out for other nutes. GroNut and Indica Sativa, sounds like you've used FN in coco with success; I'd be much obliged if you would tell me a little about your regimens.
