Ok I guess I was wrong if they stop teaching it in a few generations the holocaust will become a distant memory like any other historical event.

The holocaust in ww2 wasn't the first time in history when the Jews and other minorities were killed or mass genocide against another group of people was commited.

Here is a good article on the historical uniqueness of the Nazi Holocaust:

http://www.holocaust-trc.org/uniqueness.htm

To quote the end of the article: The question remains, has "Auschwitz become an eternal warning or merely the first station on the road to the extermination of all races and the suicide of humanity"?

Again, I will reiterate the value of actually having some knowledge on a topic beyond what you get on Discovery channel before you start making comments, Yummy.

Here is a good article on the historical uniqueness of the Nazi Holocaust:

http://www.holocaust-trc.org/uniqueness.htm

The Final Solution was the first time in recorded history that the total annihilation of an entire people and all traces that they existed was the primary goal, as opposed to a side effect of brutal policies (Stalin's forced collectivization, Cambodian social redesign). This goal was carried out at all costs, with extreme deleterious effects on the German war effort and economy. A small quote from the above linked article:

Failure to confront the Jew would spell disaster for the human race, Hitler thought, as the following excerpt from Mein Kampf shows: If, with the help of his Marxist creed, the Jew is victorious over the other peoples of the world, his crown will be the funeral wreath of humanity and this planet will, as it did thousands of years ago, move through the ether devoid of men.... by defending myself against the Jew, I am fighting the work of the Lord." (18) In other words, as Steven Katz has noted, the "Holocaust was intended as, and received its enormous power from, the fact that it aimed at restructuring the cosmos anew -- now without 'the Jews.' (19) Those who understood national socialism as "nothing more than a political movement," Hitler rightly observed, 'know scarcely anything of it. It is more than a religion: it is the will to create mankind anew." (20)

This abiding obsession with destroying the Jewish people can also be seen in Hitler's Political Testament. In his last communication with the German people, written on April 29, 1945, at 4 a.m. just before he and his mistress Eva Braun committed suicide, Hitler declared that "Above all I charge the leadership of the nation and their followers with the strict observance of the racial laws and with merciless resistance against the universal poisoners of all peoples, international Jewry." (21)

"It is," as Katz has argued, "this unconstrained, ideologically driven imperative that every Jew be murdered that distinguishes" [the Holocaust] "from prior and to date subsequent, however inhumane, acts of collective violence, ethnocide, and mass murder." (22) No longer did the Jews have the option to convert to Christianity and escape being killed. As long as the Nazis viewed them a separate race, the Jews were destined for extinction. Nothing the Jews could do would change that.

The only event that begins to compare in terms of it's totality of purposeful annihilation is the Rwandan genocide, which was a fast, reactive oppurtunistic event that happened over 100 days, not a calculated legal campaign of disenfranchisment, humiliation, degradation, dispossesion, deportation, torture and mass slaughter waged over 12 years with the complete and enthusiastic participation and involvement of every public and government institution in the country, including both Catholic and Protestant Churches

Again, I will reiterate the value of actually having some knowledge on a topic beyond what you get on Discovery channel before you start making comments, Yummy.

It's the ignorance that pissed me off......well informed obnoxiousness bothers me much less.

I think the real question is: Who is really offended by it? I find it hard to believe that students are offended by the curriculum. Rather it is more likely that it is actually a dispute between parents and teachers in that if anything parents have told their children that it's offensive. If you know anything about children you'd know that they don't take offense to things which are unrelated to them in the immediate. They partook of neither side in the actual events so it is not something they would be offended by. However, I find it highly likely that parents who have a qualm over the recorded events are going to pass them on to their children and continue to teach their children their side of truth rather than the actuality. We do still have deniers among us to this day.

What we should all be learning from this is that it is the responsibility of the parents to educate your children. We have seen in so many areas that the State is incompetent to do anything in a professional manner, yet we entrust them with the education of our children and look to them for our welfare.

There are those who trust in God. There are those who trust in the government. There are those who trust in themselves. For long term survival, I'm betting on those who trust in themselves.

Next thing to be bumped from the cirriculum'll be England's role in the slave trade, then Australia, because god forbid the Brits be offended for teaching kids their role in one of the biggest penal colony settlements in human history. Then they'll stop teaching about the former European-owned countries in Africa, the former British control in India, etc etc. Who knows, maybe they'll quit teaching about the kings who had more than one wife, so they don't offend the hard-core monogamy folks.

Bump one part of history from class using the "so we don't offend" excuse, and there's bound to be more events in history to get swept under the rug as well. Hell, the US perfected that art---I learned about the WW2 camps for the Japanese in 6th grade. 3 years later, my younger brother sits in the same class and hears not one mention of it.

While not remembering the holocaust is a bad thing..remembering it as the worst thing thats ever happened is the worst.

no jews have been slaughtered by my countrymen (aside from the murder every now and then i suppose)..Still we have to put our flags out when its holocaust day. I cant see our flags waveing in any other country for our suffering ? What about us..700 years of slavery...75% of my people whiped out..by germans, russians, danes, swedish..etc etc...who remembers us ? FUCK double standards!

i guess we're just too small to be remembered...its all math in the end..

(nikijad do not expose me...but if you look up history you know what im talking about ;))
