I find that since the first of the year, China changed the standards for what they will accept into
their recycling stream.
Simply put, 90% of what we produce no longer qualifies, with the result being that what had been a source of revenue for our cities just became an additional expense.
It does of course signify something else altogether now doesn't it. Something our sizzling hot media seems to have no interest in covering at all.

What Americans dump tends to be very "dirty" - e.g. throwing away a big cardboard box that a TV came in, and leaving the molded styrofoam in the box, for the recyclers to deal with it.

For a long time China paid people on their end to deal with it.

Of course, there may have been local subsidies. There was in my county where they coordinated it so that the recycling provided jobs.


I think it's partially something for the schools to deal with.

e.g. teaching papermaking.

Here's a big pile of raw materials, cardboard instead of trees.

If you want an "A" in this class, turn that cardboard into something useful, about the same way they did 150 years ago.


But the students were in their TRANS sensitivity class so they missed that shop class /sarc

In Europe all soda and drinks come in reusable glass bottles (like we used to have) in reusable heavy plastic cases. Everything gets recycled and towns have compost centers.
