An accurate description of events as I recall learning them.
Ho Chi Minh approached Kennedy in the fifties, hat in hand telling him that Vietnam wished an attempt at democracy.
Fidel Castro also had exactly the same request.
As did seventy some other leaders since the second world war.
The US always was the first choice.
History has shown us what the result was with Cuba and Viet Nam.
How very different things could have been...
P.S. I lived full time in Vietnam for a couple of years and found the Vietnamese more than accommodating and peaceful in general. Every society has it's assholes....Gry as you know I am the first "individual" to sign a free trade agreement in that communist country.....................I would have NEVER been able to do that in many "free" places in the way I did. No way, no chance and as far as cannabis well......I wouldn't worry about it too much in Vietnam.
P.S. I lived full time in Westminster for a couple of years and found the Vietnamese more than accommodating and peaceful in general. I remember being taken to a big celebration in Mile Square Park in Fountain Valley.P.S. JFK visited the country as a young Senator in the early fifties.Gry would you try to remember where you saw that because in the 50's Kennedy didn't have a lot of power to help in that regard but in the 40's according to the Vietnamese I know who tell me that ho sent a letter to President Truman Oct 17, 1945, seeking help to fight the french and to "urgently help support Vietnamese Independence and even https://iowaculture.gov/history/edu...e-sets/cold-war-vietnam/letter-ho-chi-minh-to. Letters to Sec of State in Oct 1945 and others in the same time frame and nothing else until 1967 exchanged letters with johnson and again in 1969 with nixon, "realizes it's difficult to communicate this way from so far with the jist of the letters seeing to end the war. Nixon wrote back stating he knew the war was going on too long and he was seeking to end it peacefully.
I don't know anything about castro cept he was getting a commish from the weed we smuggled off the isle back in the late 70's.
