Luther Burbank stands out above all, what we learned from him is sadly hardly touched on in our clandestine world, only Sam's original work with Skunk 1 bears mentioning in this company.

No disrespect to lots of great people, DJ clearly created something very special, but IMO it is unfinished work. Cannabiogen/ACE stabilising and improving landraces also deserve mention, doing actual real plant breeding work.

Skunk #1 is one of the 1st overhyped strains imvho, took the name from a hardcore American classic the RoadKill Skunk which isn't similar to it in any way and added confusion for a lot of growers looking for real Skunk like Swerve's OG hybrids have done. Only reason it's sold the way it has is because of the name Skunk.... most UK growers, where the strain is popular don't even know what a real skunk smells like, atleast not any of my many friends, that's one of the reasons it disappoints most in the US that grow it.

The myth of it being in most of the modern hybrids is hysterical and added to the hype... that's like saying OG is a part in every modern hybrid nowadays.

would you care to elaborate

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luther_Burbank

http://mentalfloss.com/article/57818/10-crazy-creations-plant-wizard-luther-burbank

One of the foundations of his methods is breeding by mass selection, starting 100,000 seeds, cull 90 % a few days later, repeat, repeat.

Loads of more useful ideas about how it really should be done in those 2 links and many more on the www

Very few of the Cannabis breeders have ever done anything worth talking to a real botanist about while several others claim that they have some kind of relevant qualifications that they clearly do not.

As the legal situation is rapidly changing, so too will the varieties we have, it will become like tomatoes and strawberries, strains will be patentable and the standard of available stock will shoot up as a result. This will also mean that the myriad bullshitters who have filled this world since Sam, will get weeded out quickly, including a lot of the names mentioned in this thread.

I appreciate what you're saying but i guess we have a different definition of "breeder". Breeding didn't start with Luther Burbank and end with Sam Skunkman. If it had then how many strains would be available today?

popped the seeds , years ago I had two females(heavily stressed) that pollenated themselves and got 30 or so seeds to play with , the original pack only had 5 seeds

Probably, but then the discussion is simply at what level of ability do you bestow this title.

Yes, Luther Burbank was nice the first, nor last breeder, but he is generally held to be one of the best and most influential, a lot of what he did could well be applied to Cannabis and soon will be.

Sam, likewise, there are commercial hemp strains that no doubt were the result of a lot more work than he ever did, they were achieved with the use of many hectares of research farm, yet Sam still managed to achieve something special while underground. Since then, with few exceptions, there has not been much created originally, just crosses of other peoples crosses and a few developed lines as well as a whole lot of lies and bs fuelled by hype.
