Today the Earth is Flat: R.I.P. Mad Mike

It's amazing how much denial people are willing to put themselves through.

I'm going to forever wonder why this guy didn't buy plane tickets.

Shooting from the hip I would guess that he didn't trust the plane was actually flying and the window was a video screen.

He could have been suicidal for years now, but instead of killing himself like a coward, decided to con a bunch of flat earth retards into paying for his rocket casket. Never know, I always said if you are gunna go out, do it in style. He may have been smiling like a retard as he hit his parachute button prior to take off. Later fuckers.

Better to die living than it is to live dying. He wanted to be a rocket man and he was. I have a feeling the flat earth thing was only in jest. Something to bring publicity and generate cash for the next ride.

I wonder though that without the pressure from the Discovery Channel if perhaps he would have taken more caution or did he feel rushed to make a schedule.

I saw a video years ago of the motorbike/daredevil guy Travis Pastrana, talking about when he jumped out of a plane without a parachute.
The interviewer said so what would you do if you missed grabbing onto the guy with the chute?
Pastrana says 'i guess there would be a hole in the ground the shape of my body with both thumbs up' :biglaugh:

Having met him a couple times, I can say with 100% certainty that Travis has a death wish. He loves cheating death. He knows one time he might not and he seems to be ok with it.

I have often wondered what it feels like to view the world through they eyes of an extreme athlete such as him. Or any of the gravity defying clowns. The world must feel much different when you are prepared to throw yourself confidently off a cliff.

On a bit safer less lunatic level. I think people that walk or bike across entire continents must have a great inner sense of freedom just knowing they can go anywhere.

The world is much smaller than it looks. Often wondered if other extreme athletes are as terrified of open spaces as I am.

Its a wonderful feeling to be able to feel the size and gravity of yourself in relation to the earth, and the universe.

Well, it relieves the terror, anyways. Some people just want to feel small, and connected.

Like a baby in utero..

And fwiw, I think we’re all cowards. It’s only the biggest chickens who would want to prove something like this to themselves. The worst. The least naturally abled. If it were something someone weren’t scared of.. or truly believed they could do, there wouldn’t be any point in doing it..

How many pounds of thrust does a tiny airplane need ?

If I made some lightweight wings, and attached 1 or 2 leaf-blowers on each side, with a downhill take-off ...

How could he have thought the earth was flat ? Was it a marketing shtick or did he actually believe that ?

it appeared he aborted 'cause he didn't get that much altitude, maybe he knew the chute was deployed on liftoff. poor bastard.

We used to see guys at the racetrack with cars barley held together with chicken wire, paint cans full of cement for ballast bungee corded in, roll bars drilled to shed weight, etc. I always wondered, not admired, how some could value life so little.

I saw something about this guy a few years ago and knew I would be reading this one day. Have to be tough to be dumb. I will never understand it but hey went out doing what he loved and got his 15 min of Fame.

Balls that drag and make sparks I guess. R.I.P

Having jumped from a few good airplanes as well as one not so good, I found a certain exuberance in the feeling that I had cheated death. It’s an addicting rush and psychotherapy all in one.

He had one successful voyage. I guess it was only the last one that counted.
