me too. even back in 2007 when facebook first solicited me to become a member but requested access to all my contacts i knew they were greasy so i made a new email with no contacts and joined in a fake name. i dont think any website is as intrusive as facebook. they way they mind my business is like a stalker ex girlfriend. fuck you mark.

also, you can't give a bunch of stoners a "don't care" option
just too easy....

i personally love seeing dont care winning so far, thats just too funny lol. fing classic. but i also think people know that new is not always better when it comes to these things. last thing we need is all the spying and profiling thats done by some forums to target advertising and spam everyone to death. obviously we need some adds for the revenue, but the present format seem good. i hate those sites where there is more adds on the page then actual content, or where the content is mixed in with adds and sponsored content.

Yeah gr@sscity fucking sucks.

Even if you make it past the adverts the place is full of bloody tits, beyond a few odd ducks.

Maybe the current software can be tweaked to knock down a few communal pet peeves.

Uploading is a pain in the ass, for one.

Uploading is a pain in the ass, for one.

I find the uploading functions at ICMag to be quite useful.

True, if I have a large image, in terms of file size, I have to load it to another server, then use the URL for the image in conjunction with the "mountain + sun" image upload icon.

But that doesn't bother me at all.

Generally on the WWW we pay for higher bandwidth web resources with ad-watching, or a subscription fee.

Overall, I would say the website just plain works.

Mainly, members at ICMag are capable of writing long answers.

Somewhat paradoxical, since we're, some would say, "just a bunch of stoners".

Yet here at ICMag we find WAAAY more thoughtful answers than are normally posted on Facebook.

ICMags forums are a huge searchable information source. Would all of this import into another format?

def losing all that is here is not worth an upgrade, the info buried in all the threads here is super dense and valuable
perhaps some way to archive the info in these Vbul forums if it can't all transfer over?

I would not agree to upgrade if we are going to end up loosing any relevant data. If the whole site cannot migrate into the new software fluidly and without errors, galleries and all, then I'm not so sure that its a good idea to upgrade at all.

That's what all the testing/checking is about before attempting such a thing I presume..

Migrating to a new software and trying to retain the existing database would be a fucking nightmare. There are plenty of addons that will assist in things like the gallery but.... any way you look at it, if you change from vBull to another software you're going to loose plenty.

If it were my site and I were forced to change software, I would have "the old site" and "the new site" LOL No way I would try to migrate all this data to a new app. Not only would it be a nightmare to do but every time you patch or upgrade after that, you're going to have to deal with it.

IMO, it's pretty much an "all or none" type of decision. Keep ALL of vBulletin or take NONE of the data to the new site.

Have not seen any input from the admins in this thread so it looks like... business as usual is the future. LOL

Having the old site and the new site would suck.

I think there was some input a couple posts back there.

Vbull is a dinosaur from the bbs days, but it works. They'll probably do an upgrade one of these decades. Just because you paint it tan and give it a big orange comb over doesn't mean it's going to work better. Could turn out to be a mess.

ICmag has gone through some hard times in recent years, the site owner was dragged down low by the powers that be, so obviously this made taking big leaps with the site impossible. many resources that were around in the old days have dwindled away, partly self inflicted, but not all self inflicted. even now much is in limbo, but i do hope that things will be modernized soon. for now we are trying to keep the place up and running so it remains a resource for those that need it, a resource that doesn't spy on it's users and steal their data, a resource that does no ip collection and generally is a lot safer to use then most places.

i do agree that we lost a lot of great contributors over the years to silly situations and even pure ego in some cases. but i hope you noticed that we are not so quick to ban nowadays. we do know that the site depends on the contributors and hope people will find their way back soon.

we were always a counter culture site, so now that cannabis is being normalized, we have to think more about keeping our members as they have a lot of options nowadays. personally i will never join facebook, etc. the price to my privacy is way too high in those places. a few extra clicks to download a pic or so is well worth it for me. but yes, it would be cool to upgrade the site. one of the problems is saving all the pics from the old galleries.

+++++this post is my personal take on things+++++

might be a good time to rethink the data paradigm

Personally I don't feel as if the site doesn't have to conform to normalcy to evolve or lose its counter culture roots

I think that the data that is present is difficult in the present form as well as could benefit the internet world and perhaps in the process of change there is a way to bring the old information forward as needed by keeping it accessible but not malleable

there are many threads that compliment a topic for example that could be parsed of best class of information by readership dynamically as a means to formulate future content for the new site

i know i know go smoke some pot hippy

who do you think Gypsy is if not a site admin?

Sorry, I'm kind of new around here and didn't know who he was. Doesn't say administrator as his title. Admins usually do.

Anyway, I did a little poking around and..... there's a guardian angel watching over this site. LMAO

Version numbers are removed from main page footers to elim bots looking for outdated versions.

We are using an older version (3.8.0) but it seems patched current (3.8.11) and is the final version 3 release. Version 4 and 5 don't necessarily mean better or safer. If older versions are kept patched, they are as safe or safer than new versions. However, if this is the last release for version 3 (and it is), there will eventually be an exploit so we will EVENTUALLY be forced into an upgrade. Could be a long time. Even a couple years. Probably not much more.

I did a little poking around and the admin control panel and the moderator control panel are very well hidden with the directory structure here being very different than the standard vBull install.

Private pages and urls are all re-directed rather than 404. Very well done (from a security standpoint).

Like I said...... someone is watching over things. LOL

If you want to see what happens to a site where the admins don't give a shit, stop by Jorges old site. Holy cow, every other post is a bot post selling pot or online gambling.

This site is tied down pretty tight and someone is watching over us and taking care of us. LOL Trust me on this one. LOL

If you're looking to improve the site via a blog or chat box or whatever, vBulletin offers a zillion addons and options for just about everything.

OK, one last thing. Let's see if I can make myself an administrator. If not, we are tight......... what's my title now?

im glad you posted this because i was starting to wonder about your motives with your negative comments about the site. we do have a very talented webmaster who keeps things in order.

it's funny, hardly any of the admins use their admin tags here. you are just supposed to know man, lol.

Gee, sorry bud. I get that a lot. I don't mean to be rude. I guess I'm just an old grumpy fuck and there's no hiding it. LMAO I need to be more careful about how I word things.

:)

I will say this...... the content here and the contributors are the best I have found anywhere on the net.

And, now, it appears the site is tight. It runs fast as hell for me. Good servers. I have not seen it down since I joined.

What the fuck more do we want? Come to think of it, WTF was the OP bitching about? LMAO What more could you want from a site? LOL
