Thinking of using local soil...maybe?

Just read through this whole thread, what an amazing amount of info and beautiful pictures too. Will be reading more on Top Soil and gathering some from the near-by marsh and woods... Can't wait to get my own compost ready too... couple more months and I'll be rockin'... My worm farms producing a shit load of castings too. My first delve into organics was with just a cheap store bought compost mix fed with ACT and fed a liquid organic tomato feed.. I harvested that and had to stop growing due to security but I then started on prep work for my soil when it becomes safe again..

Started a compost pile made with fall leaves, straw,horse/cow shit, grass cuttings, stinging nettles,fruit/veg scraps, composted wood chips found near my local woods dark brown/black real spongey .

Worm farm fed with old root balls, coco coir, fall leaves as a base then fed fruit/veg scraps, oatmeal, cardboard, pasta ect...

Ordered some amendments so far...kelp meal, alfalfa meal, volcanic rock dust...

I will be using my home made thermo compost and worm castings, perlite, vermiculite, coco coir and peat as my base mix with those amendments listed above and will do things properly and not with cheapy pre-made soils and bottled nutes...Even tho I've stopped growing that has given me time to prepair for when i do start again and hopefully it ill pay off big time I really like the idea of re-using the soil and making it better each time.. I just think that the more I put into this before I start growing again the more I will get out.. I had been growing hydro for 2 years NFT as DWC.. then COCO COIR for 2 years then I done 1 soil grow and just found it so much more easier just left it alone didnt check ph or ec and got some nice results... that was with very basic soil and nutes I cant wait to get going properl and maybe one day grow some great plants like whats in this thread

This thread started when I came to ICMag all flustered about why the bails of Sunshine #4 I was buying were not exactly ph balanced as expected right out of the bag. Why were my plants all locked out and yellow,I was following the basic organic advice at the time..why was this happening...

Enter Verdant Green's topsoil thread...from there that gave me enough confidence to go outside and dig up topsoil as a replacement for peat.
Yet at the same time I had come to find that if I just lime the Sunshine #4 myself, regardless if it claimed to be limed..then I would have no troubles...and the peat issue changed for me once I started liming every peat product I brought back to the garden.

Thanks to Coot,MM,(and others)for solid answers and Burn1 for pushing me to lime the Sunshine#4 with dolomite..which saved my garden by doing a topdress of with the dolomite believe it or not. Of course we've come to understand that there are better 'liming' materials for peat in the years since.

I also found out that the EWC source I was using was junk...all filler with very little actual castings, thanks to Coot for pointing me in the right direction to source real EWC.

I figured it was a quality control issue with the Sunshine#4 and I ended up with 8 bags that lacked the proper lime ratio.
I decided to incorporate peat in the mix once again, only this time use local topsoil...leading to this thread...and eventually leading to the ROLS thread.

So here we are...recycling soil and running No-till pots, not using bottles of this and that from the grow-store,no ph meter,no testing,no worries, just healthy trouble free gardening for hundreds, maybe thousands of dollars cheaper than the methods of the past.

The best part..... the highest quality herb a human being can grow in an indoor potted cannabis cycle...period!

I can't thank you enough, Gascanastan. By your trial and error you guys have taught so many people to go about growing their cannabis the 'right' way. Straight up gardening. Thanks again. By the way, I can't get enough of your pics. Some really good looking weed!!

yeah any pre-anything'd commercial soil mix is a invitation for disaster

may be good batches; even a few

but what are you supposed to do? just write off the every 3rd or 4th grow as a learning experience?

NO!

know what is in your own soil ~duh

you guys truly are the pioneers of this ancient technology... before the ROLS thread I was totally scared of bringing anything inside from out. Gas, you and the other kind beings changed my grow culture in the most positive way.

It is amazing to me what people will buy without reading whats in that bag for the sake of convenience.

That is due to the effective marketing by those companies. Take Miracle Crap for example. Their marketing is so effective that the process sludge and throw it in a bag and call it ´Organic` lmao#! and they empty shelves of it at Wal-mart, Home Depot and Lowes by the metric ton each month along with their bottled chemical poison.

I'm going to repeat this part:
