I have an 8 inch can max. At full power I would say they are probably comparable as far as sound, athough I have not run them side by side. The can max is a great fan, but it also has a buzzing sound on the lower settings. The other downside to them is that they are not compatable with dimmers so you have only the 3 options for speed built in to the fan itself. If you have no need for a dimmer then the only real benefits of the hyper fan, other than reduced size and weight, is the reduced power draw which is about half that of a can max.
But the real beauty of it is the motor and dimmer which has little to no perceptible vibration and also eliminates the need for a dc converter to remove the buzz associated with dimming traditional extraction fans. If you have no need for that feature it may not be worth the price for some people. For me it was the major selling point since I'm looking for stealth in both sound and power consumption.
Still planning to do a side by side pic with all my other fans once I'm finished drying my harvest.
