plus old timers did not differentiate "kush" from "afghani"

They were pretty right then...

Kush = Afghan and Pakistan hashplants (this are the landraces native from the Hindu Kush range, Cannabis Indica ssp. Afghanica and probably originated in the old Chinese Turkestan).

The rest is just hype!

Vibes.

I've released some original skunk beans from BOEL , they were 79/80's but not on IG , the original sk1 is not road kill but it does have the skunk sulphur stink but not the road kill stank , the roadkill was made from taking it back to the Afghani , the problem is today's Afghanis are not quite the same as the olders ghanis , not to mention there are many afghanis from Afghanistan that are not related.. From creamy to acrid, AF#1 is on the creamy compared to some of the late 80's afghanis were skunky cedar pine hash tones , I made a sk1 chem 4 cross that was close to roadkill with Chem undertones to it,,

When I made Skunk #1 in the nid-70's it was RKS not sweet at all. For the first decade I made Skunk #1 seeds that were RKS, but as I preferred the sweeter Skunk #1 I selected toward that, this was before using clones made it easy to make seeds that were identical batch after batch, varieties were maintained by growing new seeds every year and using those plants to make next years seeds.
RKS was not a Skunk#1 crossed back to an Afghani, it was a pure Skunk #1, pre 1985 when I started using clones to make seeds and found several clones that I really liked both males and females that gave the results I liked. They were selected from 20,000 Skunk #1 seedlings grown at one time in one location. They were selected by making crosses of the ten best males times the ten best females, so 100 different seed batches and 100 seeds of each cross were all grown side by side to determine the best progeny and parents that made them. Then I knew which combo was the most consistent, the strongest, the sweetest, etc. I still have those clones.

BOEL did not make skunk they got them from me. I had several friends in BOEL, I used to hang in Laguna Beach, Mystic Arts, and was there for the concert that BOEL gave in Laguna Canyon (christmas 1970 I think) where they handed out sunshine and dropped it from a helicopter with flowers, I still have the card the sunshine came in.

My original Skunk #1 was so RKS that you could smell a grow indoors or outside from almost a mile away. Got many growers in trouble.

G`day Sam

Could you elaborate on the crosses you made pre SK#1 to create it ? please .

I`m not looking to reverse engineer like some ...
More interested how and why those plants came to be mated and what the goal was at the time ?

Thanks for sharin

That would be interesting indeed...

PS:

I selfed the MazarXColombian hybrids to other MazarXColombian hybrids. This was in the early 70's.
-SamS

Mazar, but then crossed with a Columbian, then selfed, then the hybrid crossed with Acapulco Gold to make it a bit earlier.
-SamS

Almost correct, (Colombian x Mazar) x (Mazar x Colombian) and the result (Colombian/MazarXMazar/Colombian)square x Acapulco gold.

hey Sam, big fan of your work!

nowadays, Skunk#1, more specificly the RKS feno is considered a lost legend, I mean, I live in Brazil, and I grew up hearing stories of what Skunk looked and smelled like, for you to have a clue on the magnitude this specific feno reached.... its a global legend....
I´ve grown out sensi seeds Skunk #1 believing to be growing out the legend itself..... but, none of the plants came out with a Skunkie smell, they were all fresh and sweet, beautiful big nugs, lots of sugar, but no funk....

as a big strain enthusiast, i´d like to know Sam, is it possible to bring back the funcky smelling Skunk#1 ? ..... and if the answer is yes, why not bring it back, seen the grate demand for it?....

all the best!

there is no chance I will bring out an old RKS anytime soon, it is old and uninteresting to me and I only work on what is close to my heart. If RKS was the best I can't help but wonder why no one has a clone of one, the RKS was around for years as seeds after clones were introduced in the late 70's? Then it would be easy to STS the lady and get pure RKS, not even real breeding work......
BTW, when I had RKS varieties I used to enter them in California Harvest festivals and won first place many times, all the time I was smoking Original Haze at the festivals, but because my OHaze was super stretchy It had no chance in the contests which was part a beauty contest of how the bud looked bagged, the OHaze looked like shit, but was way, way, better pot in my book.
There are many people who like the dankness of the RKS, often they prefer Indicas with knock-down couchlock, over up soaring strong as hell but clear Sativas, I do not.
No disrespect to any of them I am a firm believer in different smokes for different folks, but they need to solve their own supply needs.

Sam outside of doing what bodhi does and traveling (experiencing) and collecting seeds from different places through out the world.

Is there any landraces to your knowledge available now that could put one on the path to the more rank smells? maybe not a roadkill skunk per'se ...

I know most of the landraces that are available are not much the same as what once was.

would agree w/Sam on his point of the rankness traveling far and away........I was in Corralitos late 70's-early 80's and we were fortunate to have the RKS............and yes it was rank from sprout through cure.................. we tended many ghani cultivars that were skanky and lotsa wannabes, but nothin' matched it for pure nasty roadkill...........

best in the quest..........

ganj on.................

In 92' I had 4 reg beans of the true Skunk#1 that was like sniffin a skunks peehole.
I unfortunately was a brand new grower and put the smaller 2 ladies on the rooftop of my apt complex where they were taken by some kids, then flowered out the 2 males.
If I only knew how rare these seeds would be today, and I was more experienced, I would have made seed and never lost this strain. Big, round, lime-green nugz that werent too dense and not too fluffy. Just right. What a smell! Truly miss that strain.

Hey there uncle Sam =) , i never ment BOEL made skunk just how i got them Nor did i say it was sweet ..., i have family members that were BOEL , The Kerala had sweeter tones , The skunk i grew from from back then didnt reek skunk "like" some of the Chem / Og lines of today... I got to try some SK1 BX'd to old afghani from Werener and it reeeked sulpur road kill skunk galore , much more than the originals i got from BOEL collection.. my mom and pops were at the same laguna gatherings and montery Pop , they also hung out at Pandoras box and the cheetah club among with many others in LA area , i get to hear many stories about Tim and the laguna crew.... Did you and Rob ever get to try any of your South African sk1 efforts or were they all lost? My uncle was buddys with Quick Silver Messenger Service and Arthur brown and many others , im sure your familiar with those guys too....

im not trying to make it a pissing contest just sharing info is all
