I found this Skunky tale looking for grows with the same Skunk #18 I am currently starting. (Edited so as not to be a free advertisement).

Ok everyone gather around, I want to tell you a story... just pulled the "GDP" off the lines, boxed it up and now I'm starting to trim it. I have suspected for a long time that it was not a GDP and I knew as soon as strectch hit that it wasn't my cut of GDP I grew last year (the grapey purple cut) and as soon as week 6 hit and no grape smells at all and smaller long colas then what I was used to, I was fairly certain it was not GDP. Now that it's done and I'm trimming it and I'm up close and personal with it I am 100% sure it's not GDP.*

It smells like a skunks asshole I mean eye watering, I could remove paint with that smell, the buds are a light green with firey orange hairs. The smoke tastes sweet like a sour hard candy with a nice sweetness, little hints of skunky musk and fruits. Potent as fuck too leaves me stoned staring into space.

I'm 98% sure it's skunk #1. I called the club I got this years "GDP" cuts from, I asked them about the cuts they get and where they get them and they said it's from a guy calls himself MT. I found the link to where to get clones from and it took me to his collective he runs in south Lake Tahoe that had a huge list of clones from MT nurseries and on the list was "Uncle Fester's skunk #1". I sent him mail to ask him about my plant and sent him pics to verify, got an email back saying ya that's its uncle festers skunk #1 and that I quote now "god damn that's a big girl".*

I was sad at first that this massive plant I grew was not GDP, but upon my research and finding out what it really is I'm even more excited. It's a very enjoyable smoke, old school, reminds me of the really good weed I'd get back when I first started smoking. Dates back to 1964 and the Hells Angels and one of the members "Uncle Fester" gave the cut to MT and he has back crossed it to get seed and stabilize. The cut I have is not the 1964, but a modern IBL seed version choice fresh cut choosen by Tto be as good a rep of the original as it can be.*

That story sounds like GDP to me. I got a cut from N Cali and it skunked up like hell but it also had a heavy sweetness to it, it's got a small tint of purple at 60 days but push it 2 more weeks for the heavy couch lock high and a deep purple almost black look. I smoked it for about a year and a half daily until I moved on.

Yeah I imagine some skunk phenos may throw out some purple leaf stuff, but that may be an indicator too of non-true skunk origin, as back in the lates 80's when i grew about 15 skunk plants from selfed seed/late flower self pollination, I dont recall any purple on any pheno, and they were grown outside too. The original clone never purpled at all, and the one selfed seed i have as a clone now shows no purple ever.

here's something that confirms what was said, I can't remember what thread.Plus there is a thread called sacred seeds skunk #1 in 1980 with pics and info from the 80's from dudes of the time,so that's the place to ask or learn about what's really what.

Well again, a good skunky terpene brew seems fairly easily accessible, the potency of the early dead skunk smelling ones is what is hard to obtain. A old school breeder friend of mine had the UK cheese, and assured me it had low-medium potency.

It was said awhile back, and it makes a lot of sense to me, that the real rks was not skunk #1, had no relation to skunk #1, and is most likely an import bud that just was called skunk bud because of the smell. Skunk #1 from Sam has always been a medium-low potency sweet smelling strain. Might be one of the first marketed stable hybrids, but Sam can't claim the rks as his. Pretty sure the rks people were getting in the 80's was pre-soviet Afghan imports, and as hrpuffnkush mentioned, the ghani farmers basically killed the genes with selection, creating more sweet incense hashy profiles. I'd recommend hitting whatever skunky profiled strains you have with a nice bell ringer landraces sativa, maybe Vietnam black or hao bac, you could probably find a pheno with the road kill smell and the forehead sweating potency you're looking for. Just my humble opinion though. I know some people in Detroit that claim to have the real rks clone, I've only had the wax from it, hopefully I'll be able to sample the flowers soon and have a more informed opinion on the topic.

Well i am not sure where the guy is who brought it to us is these days, he might have some info on it. I saw sam say recently his original skunk was stinky as hell, and potent as hell, and he bred away from the couchlocky effect and towards as well not so much stink, starting almost right away. I do know we got our cuttings from california, in 1980. Wether or not he had any hand in breeding it is unknown, just likely.

Not dissing Sam in anyway, the man has made leaps in medical marijuana research, and is a blessing to the community. I'm just under the impression that his strain being called skunk caused confusion and that rks is different. I've got a 1989 shiva skunk mother, made with Sams #1 way back in the day, and it's a sweet skunky smell. Great bud, but not sulfur carcass roadkill. Also seen a few samples of select phenos from flying Dutchman skunk, which was made with Sams stock. I just think skunky is such a common pallet in weed that there were likely a lot of strains floating around with that terp profile back then, and they're either lost or held very tightly.

I was around in the 70's, albiet a bit younger, i did start smoking at a very early age. in 1980 i was 12, skunk came into town then for us. As well my dad and his friends were around and older than I. There was very rare instances of things that were skunky, and actually not really any from before around 1978 in our area. We got lots of bud imported up from cali and mexico by truckers, my dad recalls the gainsville green as being something similar but not really skunky like the roadkill we got. It was actually very rare to see skunky smelling strains back then. There was two instances of other skunks in the area, never grew them, but saw two other great versions of skunkweed, probably other early phenos related to what we had. I believe one was what was callled the Massachusetts super skunk, and another called Louisiana skunk. Regardless of wether or not sam made the excellent dead on the road skunk smelling weed we had or not, it was not a common terp profile. We had cambodians, columbians, thais, etc, etc. there was a big import scene in Vancouer back then and none of it was skunky, until the local weed(read skunk) was better than anything we could import. As well, the quality of import declined as people ramped up production to meet the demand.

G`day Stanky

You qualify your post with . Not dissing Sam in anyway,

Then proceed to diss him severely . He says he created the strain . You say he didn`t ?

But no disrespect ? Where I come from . Calling some one a liar without 1st hand proof is disrespect of high order .

Thanks for sharin

EB .
