I'm growing Malawi in NZ, I use rain crystals outdoors over here and have never had a plant die on me from drought.
Protection is a must over here because of our possum population, they love Marijuana.
I usually have 2 plants per plot with 1m netting tied out to trees and gorse. Gorse is good to grow in because no wandering people like walking through it along with animals.
I totally agree with you that growing in smaller numbers gets better results and is far easier to manage, guerilla growing is hard work!.
Lots of Nz growers have had the main stems of their plants snapped from high winds this year. Malawi seems to be extremely weather proof and healthy - best vegatative plant I've ever grown, amazing branching system too.
