I have read that zamal is naturally up to 50% hermaphrodite? this is not correct?

not in my experience.....but I've only grown about 20 Zamal females, (GN Zamals & ZamalxZamal I made) ...and had 3 or so hermies that showed early, never late.

is the flower response primarily related to age?

The Zamals flower response I grew were partially photoperiod responsive and partially responsive to age.

Rosenthal discusses this at length dividing strains into "absolute photo-determinate" : APD, "relative photoperiod determinate" RPD and ruderelis in one of his earlier grow books

see "Marijuana Growers Handbook" by Ed Rosenthal

Zamalito - did you find the plants would flower sooner when rootbound also?

I did....with clones expect a few weeks earlier...but I dont count days as I used to grow on a balcony in pots or in the bush....anyway, when you are talking about a strain that you count the flowering duration in months/sesons not weeks...who cares? they are gonna take for ages to finish..be patient .... just let them fully finish, and then some...I once grew GN C99 and GN Zamal clones in pots side by side ..after I picked the Cindys, I revegged and re-flowered them and they finished flowering a second time before the Zamals had finished for the first time..but there's a unique complexity to the Zamal high that makes up for it, all my smoko mates liked it too!... but just dont devote your entire grow to it ..grow variety!...it's been awhile since I puffed on some Zam..so I might pop a few more!

Happy growing

Hi Zam, Chamba, everybody. I've been interested in this strain for awhile now, since the "Mafatese Sativa " thread on OG. I"ve seen it highly recommended by several people, (or was that just you Chamba?) What I need to know is how they react to cool/cold weather in the fall. All advice, tips, etc. welcomed. Thanks, F77. By the way, that Zamal hybrid mentioned earlier was probably Zamal type A x Warlock by Magus Genetics.

I recently met someone from Reunion Island for the first time. I had no idea where it was but I'd heard the name. This thread was an interesting read, as is any thread Zamalito chooses to grace!

The Zamal definitely sounds like it has a lot of Indian genetics. I grew out some Indian sativas that I personally brought back in '05 and they took about 20 weeks to flower in some cases!

20 weeks - yikes. you would want to have a greenhouse for sure. So Zamal would be about 14 weeks+ ? Does anyone have high rez pics of this strain?

My experience is it likes to branch even within the buds there's little branches. I'm thinking that since La Réunion is so cool temperature wise even moreso in the mountains that maybe the higher the ratio of light to temperature the wider the buds are and less branchy the plants are. The only environments I've seen it grow in were either hot or indoors so I've only seen long narrow plants with lots of branches but in La Réunion it may be a more cola dominant plant.

Ogroyal thanks for the compliment. I try to read as many books on as many different plants and anthropology as possible. I frequent a few of the used book stores and I just cannot pass up a good plant book. Personally I don't recommend the forums as a good source of information. I've had a couple people ask me if I was someone else from og but I'm not and had never posted and rarely read anything off of the forums until this past march.

I am shamelessly bumping this thread. Does anyone else have experience with this strain, or possibly pics?

I am assuming there is a fair bit of variety within Zamal depending on the location where seeds are collected. I base this on the varied maturation times quoted and other characteristics mentioned. Would you say this is a fair assumption Zamalito?

dunno, the description of the strain came from a person who has grown with the strain for years and gave it to gypsy and said its been ibl for some time now, so i dont think ZAMALito's ZAMAL (ha caught that one along time ago) would have variations

Thanks for the info. These islands sound like they're begging for an icmag field trip. These have to be preserved. All of the ancient south indian and thai lines are there along with one of the finest climates for growing and breeding. One only needs to imagine the possibilities.

Reunion is a (sub)tropical Island and is about as "cold" as Florida.....palm trees, beaches, bikinis and thousands of retired French bureaucrats

like most sativas, Zamal is drought, mold, windstorm and heat resistant..

I have never been to La Reunion and have never tasted the Zamal, but as I read the French cultivation forums I sometimes come across Reunion growers and Zamal-threads. Here are some pictures of the Zamal from a Cannaweed.com (a French-Swiss site) thread:
http://www.cannaweed.com/forum/sujet-21264_16-zamal-reunion.html
As you can see (but perhaps not read), artur grows his Zamal plants in pots. Real Zamal - according to Reunion growers - is not supposed to be grown in pots with nutrients though (it is a low feeder and reacts badly to high doses of nutrients), but wild in endemic soil, and the different varieties and qualities of Zamal are classified to the type of vegetation it grows in. The most reputed variety on the Island is the "mangue-carotte" (mango-carrot), which gets its special taste from growing next to Mango trees, but the lemon-Zamal (which of course grows next to lemon trees) is also appreciated.
Forget about the 14-16 weeks. Reunionaise growers say Zamal big trees grow for up to a year (!) before being harvested. This is hearsay though, so do not quote me on it. I don't think you need to worry about the protection of this special landrace, it is cared for by skilled local growers, and the Reunionaise prefer their own indigenous weed to foreign high tech Skunk hybrids.
If you want more info on the Zamal, I can dig up bits and pieces of info from Reunion growers.

That's really cool rosy. I' growing my zamal and zamal x parvati's (hard for most people to discern from the pure zamal except more resin) in bags this year and was very pleased with the results. I normally rootbind them in a smaller cup before transplanting them out in the bush. Although there were 4" circles cut out of the bottom of the bag to let them root into the ground also. I normally get sweet and sour lemon and mango overtones but this year the zamal x parvati's (pure zamals havent finished yet) produced a strong really sweet distinctive carrot flavor for the first time. To get the full effect I have to put it in my freeman corbin sherlock bubbler that has a 1" deep bowl a green hit off of that much herb really gives you a good sampling of the flavor and its very distinct. Also since they were grown in bags I let them lean over making them a multi branched plant they're some amazing producers. One zamal x parvati was 3.5' tall and yielded 10 oz. Normally the zamals grow tall and are too branchy to produce large colas but the bags made the plants just a dense concentration of large colas.

Also I just bought a nice panasonic digital camera that has a leica lens and thanks to nepthaze who will put some of my pics up from this years grow. You guys will get a good idea of the zamal, zamal x parvati, wamm malawi, wild malawi, acapulco gold, oaxaca gold, oaxacan pelo rojo, columbian chaco green, kashmiri resin factory, ghanaian/blueberry x acapulco, and ghanaian/blueberryx pelo rojo in a week or two.

I can't wait to see your pictures of all those landraces zamalito. Very glad to see you back posting again. I missed your detailed posts and all that excellent information you have to offer to icmag.
