If you've only 'heard about it, may I suggest 'The Civil War' by Shelby Foote? The series by Ken Burns was bassed on it.I heard about a lot of stuff, we still as a whole are better off IMHO

I visited the place where the last public hanging happened in Canada.
It's a two story stone building, the person being hanged is on the second story, so you can see them when the rope is put around their neck and then they drop to the bottom story, it's a 2 story drop. The head could be pulled of the body.

Gettysburg is cool. I've been to a few Civil War sites.
I think DB Cooper was approaching it from an Aristotelian view instead of a more Socratic, where there are 'ideals' of 'good', 'horseness', and such.

I an surrounded by civil war sites here in VA. Some of the folks are still fighting it. Not the slavery part, but the influx of northerners who bring their big city/liberal beliefs with them. They move to the country to get away from the city life, but they bring all their luggage with them.
Part of the distrust issue is the number of damn Yankee scalawags and carpetbaggers that raped the south following the Civil War.

But can we not agree that there are universal goods? Good that all agree on as in our best interests? Health for example. Everyone would appreciate a body in good health.
If there is a universal good concerning politics and government, why are the polls split 50/50? America seems to be deeply divided on what is good for America. How can either side write off the other when the numbers are so big? You can't ignore that many people.
