Hey!! I just thought of sumpin' -- a highlight, if you will. I once "bucked in" a transit in just two steps. I admit I was stone lucky, but nevertheless -- my crew was impressed.
Bucked in --> You set up your transit on the imaginary line between two distant points. You set up the transit, take a flip view of each distant point, and move the transit so that when you turn it 180 or flip it, the crosshairs hit the points both ways.
The plumb bob hanging from the transit will be exactly on that invisible imaginary line... so you can then take off from any angle, knowing your baseline.
Now that you got me started, I still have my loupe somewhere... It was worn around your neck like a lavalier... a badge of office.
