Not to sure where this question goes

Everyone in here has helped me out before, so I thought I'd see what y'all thought. During veg, what is the preference, 18/6 or 24/0? Does it even matter, I've jus been wondering. Actully, I read somewhere, that plants use the off time to grow roots? This seems like then you couldn't do 24/0, so can someone explain this to me please? Like I said, i was jus curious. Thanks in advance to any replies.

Depends on your strains, but typically people like to run 18/6 or 20/4 and even some do 16/8 (especially during the summer as it helps keep temps down). The only ones I know that do 24/0 are those who are running autoflowers. I used to do 18/6 for the first couple of weeks, then 16/8 for another couple of weeks before flipping to 12/12. I'm just running autoflowers now, so it's now just 18/6 all the time.

I've read so many places that a short night cycle is supposed to be better than 24/0 but in my experience 24 gets me to where I want to be to flip quicker.

If I was a betting man, which I am, I would bet the farm 24/0 will grow a bigger plant faster. By how much I have no idea but I bet it would be noticeable. But bigger and faster is not needed for every setup and 18/6 will save you power and nutes. People always think in terms of their own needs. people need sleep and the sun is not always shining so plants must need dark. That's just not scientific thinking. If plants needed a dark cycle it would be expressed and plants under 24/0 would look horrible and that is not the case. I use 24/0 but I would love to cut back on expenses.

for me with window ac, fans and nutes i think it would be around 40-50 dollars. not sure if that's worth the extra growth. I also grow ak47 from serious seeds and mine tend to auto at the drop of a hat so lowering the light cycle also scares me. Once I get my new strain and hempy dialed in I hope I can get to where I want to be in the time frame I need to get there under 18/6.

we run 24/0 and have vegged out plants for up to six months. We burn 2 250w T5's and have had no issue with under developed roots. We tend to flip our ladies when they are about 18"-24" tall, some get lst'd. No negative issues as of yet.

I am going to try the 24/0 as well. This can be a heated debate, but the folks with the fastest veg times tend to leave the lights on. If it grows faster then you are not wasting power but breaking even and getting to harvest faster.

Heat of the days can be a good reason to use a 18/6 veg schedule from what I have heard.

Don't take my word for anything though, I don't know jack about growing as of yet.

i use 24/0 for veg also with no probs... as long as 6-8 months

the only issue is if they are gonna be moved outside...

then, going from 24's (or 18's even) to whatever the daily sun photoperiod is can cause them to temporarily flip into flowering mode for a couple of weeks instead of staying in veg.

Very good point. Not something I have to worry about dealing with autoflowers but some might. Another thing some might think twice about - the potential stress from going from 24/0 to 18/6 or less - it might be enough to hermie a fickle plant. If the end placement is going to be outside - maybe do a schedule starting at 24/0 then every week drop an hour off the on-time. Get the benefits of aggressive growth, along with prepping them for outside/shorter schedule.

A buddy of mine start his plants at 20/4, and reduces an hour of on-time every week until he gets to 14/10. After that 14/10 week, he turns the lights off for 36 hours before flipping to 12/12. We have grow the same age clones of the same strains before and he'll get flowers showing sometimes 2-3 days before I do. Lighting setups are different though. He's running at least 1000w more than me for about the same number of plants. He's also running a DIY UC system. So who knows what's helping him get the earlier flowering. Maybe total wattage, maybe system setup, maybe nutes. End yield results though aren't different enough for me to stop going with Hempy. And he has gotten root rot & had poorer yields when he first started out with his system. It's dialed in good now, but it took several harvests to do so. I almost had him convince to switch to Hempy's.

24/0 here no problems either. also been forcing an auto flower on that schedule, that i happen to discover with it as well. not a single problem. huge freaky plant compared to the others the same age.

So I went to 24/0 a few days ago, this is what I should have been doing from the start of time. This technic has absolutely impressive results, used along with my favorite new technic, Supercropping, I fucking love this method!!! Well with the two together, I have found my way of doing this now, remind you guys, I've only been doing these like 3-5 days with great results already. So to everyone who suggested these technics to me, Thank You all very much.

yup, how i do my plants as well. love supercropping, or pinching for us "old timers". my side by side with topped plants, the pinched plants are definitely bushier and growing quicker. i also practice defoliation from the beginning as well.
