In my experience it's people that have been doing things the longest that get stuck in their ways.

I had to laugh cause I would agree that growing in homemade compost is a direct path to very smooth taste and tons of flavor.

I'm a total rookie that has read way to much for his own good but i guarantee you that in 35 years I won't be using miracle grow.

You know better than that, and I know you would NOT choose your miracle grow buds for your best tasting sample.

Anyways, this is getting ridiculous.

I respect anyone here who grows on the scale you have. Fucking awesome... and the magazine articles and write ups... incredible....

But none of those hold weight to actual published books on composting and 100's of years of composting information to back it up.

Your way works.... but there is more than one way to compost.

kind of a compost question .......

i use wood chips over weed block as mulch around the garden beds. as it breaks down i throw more on top, and keeping all the things that try to grow in it is easy enough. over time it breaks down enough that i can scrape it all up and use it as a clay buster or a top dress

problem is that it's FULL of seeds ..... more cosmos and borage than weeds, but i spend plenty of time weeding out cosmos and borage anyway

any suggestions on how to kill some of those seeds and save myself some weeding time?

i thought about solarizing the stuff but have not gotten around to trying it. would it help?

you could use that stuff to feed a thermophilic pile ~should get hot enough to kill the seeds {kinda the general idea}

that (or something like it) is what i use to knock down the mass of volunteers that show up in the beds after the spring wet sets things off. it works great but i have to keep hand weeding the rest of the year anyway. i'm a little paranoid about using fire for anything once things get dry and i don't think the flame does a lot below the surface of the mulch.

when the snow melts i'll try to get a pic of the material i'm dealing with. if i had to describe it i would call it semi-composted bark fines that is full of seeds.

1 month flush wtf thats half of its flower cycle.. once you add your MG thats the organic part of your soil fucked then what 1 month without no food? nice..... is that before or after the boron and zinc deficiency ?

thats why it like to experiment and fuck around; if it can be better i want to figure that out~ i said earlier how i came in to this {icmag} forum thinking i knew what was up & it was a paradigm shift for me to find i had barely scratched the surface

bear in mind i grew up in farming communities raised by a farming family and was already an organic nutjob {still am} not that i am anything special but; it could be a lot of people could learn a new thing or 2 and it wouldnt hurt

It pretty obvious the regulars of the thread are aware of proper composting techniques since compost is often the humic source in living soil. Thanks for bringing fire to the natives... but I'm confident we have composting under control.

I learned about composting when I was 8 years old. It was the first time we had a garden and my Mom's boyfriend was very skilled. He built a huge compost pile using pallets and rebar. The pile was two pallets stacked on end high for the sides, and about three pallets long. It was a MONSTER, and I was fascinated with it. I loved the way it smelled after it was turned with fresh grass clipping... mmmmmm if only I were a plant!
Anyway, after school one day I come home to find HORSE POOP! My Mom's BF brought home a truck load of road apples, and maybe there is something wrong with me hehe but I was super excited! We shoveled that shit all over Mt. Compostmore and I jumped right on top the pile with my mud cats boots on and started jumping for joy! Looking back upon this I am a little like ewwwwwwwwwwww, HOWEVER that was the best garden I ever tended in my life. It is my benchmark that I am striving to get back too...
Anyways, compost is truly awesome and I may be a bit odd in my love for it.... maybe not.

I'm stoked to report I found 6 cu ft of rice hulls for 6.99,Perma Stall brand.In my mind that's a great price!

Going to get it today.I think I got enough to last a couple a grows.

I wouldn't think it takes to long for them to break down in the mix? Might need to add every cycle,or other?

Didn't think I could source this local.

I use to think I was kinda weird for getting excited about this part of growing but I was WRONG! I love this stuff!!!!!!!!!!
