I don't see a reason why one would not utilize it already. I mean that there sure is a bit large obstacle covering a part of the light but seems to me that it would still be more effective mounted vertically without the hood than horizontally with it. Any thoughts? Not trying to pick a fight here - just wondering...

This double ended lamp is not a vacuum lamp it is gas filled.
If you use it vertically the gasses dont mix right.
You can also take the reflector off and hang the lamp between the plants horizontal.:scripture:

Read through herbs thread and was shocked at the results, congrats on the new set-up looks like a lot of hard work for an amazing room. Can't wait to see what is in store.

I'm wondering why It hasn't been done yet...oh right...lamp guys haven't sent the gear yet...:tiphat:
:D well there is the problem of the bracket of course. Though you CAN do a lot of things, the question is if they are sensible. Without a reflector the double ended lamp does not easily reach its optimal operating temperature either.

Could you elaborate on how the gases don't mix right?

...well the plan would be to keep the bulb horizontal...the bracket can stay, ...just ditch the reflector. If these suckers are as good as the hype...I'd rather have all those extra lumens shining up n' outwards to cover the top of the canopy...

Not sure how it differs from conventional HID lighting whereas light coming out the ends is minimal at best...but hung normally without reflectors...we might have a revolution on our hands...

lol...still awaiting my box :D

I'll stop pestering in the good Agents thread however lol

lol ok then:

1. the lamps needs to be operated horizontal (yes, it is nitrogen filled)
2. you have the bracket interfering with the light
3. the lamp won't come to optimal power without a reflector. It will probably need burner warmers.

Been searching for an hour now...can't find a picture of one of these on its back witha bulb in it.

I enjoying fucking with both science and nature ...on a pretty regular basis actually....but when I read about (the lamp won't come to optimal power without a reflector. It will probably need burner warmers.) ...well that does it for me. ...

If it ain't broke, don't fix it....

Wait for it to brake...then modify it...:tiphat:

This is by far one of the cleanest setups I have ever seen. But, with all the money you spent on this project why use those thin cheezy blue tubs that were made for storing clothing or something? You should buy some heavy walled containers or even fiberglass tubs. Also, why would you place the ballasts in the same room when they could be outside?

Remote ballasts are an invention of the hydroponics industry to keep the heat (and danger) out of the grow room. 120V magnetic ballasts get really hot.

Remote Electronic ballasts with long leads will generate EMI. Also you need leads from every single ballast to your lamps.

With a full fixture you have no more EMI problems and you just run the power line into your room, which is much easier to install. Also the 240V electronic ballasts do not get very warm: The 600W dissipates only about 35W (at the end of the light cycle you can still hold it against your cheek!), the 1000W only about 60W. So that's very little heat to cool/take away from your room. Third advantage of 240V systemss is that you use half the amps than with 120: so you can easier connect more fixtures to one lead.

So, I would look at it a bit different: Why use a remote ballast when you can finally have them safe in your room? I understand that for many this is a new concept, but it is the only way to fully prevent EMI from high frequency electronic ballasts. If you use remote ballasts, keep them as close to the lamp as possible, shorten the leads to the minimal length and do not coil excess lamp cord.

Also always keep your mains cords separated from your lamp cords, as the high frequency can generate feedback into your ballast which can have damaging effects (machines are amplifiers!) and can create distortion on your mains signal.

Agent-Smith this grow is fantastic. I know you mentioned something about your parents, and as someone who has much passion for this stuff as you but is strained of how to tell your family 'you're moving to AZ/Colorado to pursue a professional career in growing' is really draining on me. I've wanted to tell them for years, did you just tell them? At what age? I'm done sitting behind a desk.

Anyways, enough about that. Would just like to hear some ideas. Can't wait to see room 2 all done up
