I seek wisdom. I have been using a 9:4 ratio of bagged soil:#4 perlite. If I am going to replace perlite with "5/16 clean red" lava rock, does my ratio need to be fine tuned?

as in, 1:1 substitution ratio perlite:lava rock?

thanks.

Yes. I have half/half in my soil and they tend to act very similar. Including the bitch ppl often have with the perlite floating to the top. I see this with the lava rock as well. With proper mulch less of an issue. Side by side studies have shown more biological activity around the lava rock opposed to perlite fwiw.

Hopefully they get as big as some of the plants I've seen in this thread! :)

They are mostly on 100 gallons smart pots, but some of them are halfway filled...

Best vibes to all!

Vermifire love it or hate???? Looking for totes or soil by the yard in southern mendo or sonoma county to fill a few 400s. Not sure where to turn. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Temporary ban resulting from what seemed to be drunken argument/ball-grating of another member who he has since made up with, I'm sure he'll be back in due course ;)

I'm testing out the vermifire this year so can't recommend it or not quite yet. Though it came highly recommended from a good friend that has been using it for a few years on both his indoor and outdoor.

Sonoma Compost has a great duckshit mix. I haven't ordered from them in a while, but I have had and seen great success in it in the past. They might even mix in additives of your choice like everybody else does now....

Definitely a fan of lava ever since reading up on big tokes thread bio buckets. The lava houses the beneficials at least in a hydro setup but I figured it couldn't hurt in an outdoor one. Goodbye perlite! Using some soil that was a couple years old all the perlite was broke down pretty good. I used it this year for the babies using MM's tea recipe and some top dressing. Tea seems to be doing pretty good considering the poor drainage. Though a couple had some I'm guessing fungus that was a yellow I've never seen before around the the roots on the botttom of the bucket. Anyone? The girls are all out of that and into a nice local mix from The Hanson brothers with some additional pete, compost from the dump at 20 bucks a yard, and even more lava then what I had the Hansons mix in the original batch for the substitute for the perlite they normally use.

Boobs Looking great!
Vegn lookin good to.

Good luck everyone and stay safe!

Borg in the wild are chicken nuggets to my high desert predators :D seriously, not a single mite or any pest. Clean starts help too I'm sure.

MR.S - The extra sunlight will make a HUGE difference. My greenhouse used to have two giant loquat trees in front of it and only got about 6 hours of sunlight.

We cut them down and now it gets 10 and the difference is night and day.
