The extent of a drug dog's smelling ability?

Verite, a policeman has as much right to walk up and knock on your door as a door to door salesman. It's all about curtilage

This decision is only binding in FL. The court also refused to hear a similar dog sniff case from UT which the search was upheld by the lower court. I'm not versed in the particulars of the UT case but think there has to be more to it, as the Supremes have seemed to take a case in which lower courts made contradictory rulings.

Even if the dog is passing your house in the alley or the front sidewalk and starts to bark/signal its still violating your privacy rights to unreasonable search the same way they arent allowed to randomly heat scan your house.

Verite, the courts ruled that a flir was considered a search becuase the means by which it is accomplished are above and beyond what a normal citizen would expect.

The courts have ruled that a dog sniff is NOT a search.

For the life of me I cannot find logic in their opinion becuase if a dog can ONLY detect contraband then how could a sniff not be considered a search.

In CA I think a roadside sniff only has to reach "reasonable suspicion" and not PC. RS is a LOT lower standard than PC.

It's also a lower standard for searching a car than a home. Did you miss the FL case the Supremes just rejected? I actually thought that's what Verite was referring to.

Just for the sake of "Knowledge Only"

There are only 2 items that will & can shut down a "Drug Dog's" nose when he is sniffing around your home or car,

& That is plain old "Household Amonia" & the old medical sleeping chemical "Either"

& since "Either" is also used in the production& refinement of Cocaine,& Could Pur your butt to sleep "at a very bad time" I would stick with the "Household Amonia" one good whiff, & that dog isn't even going to be able to smell "His Own Butt" for a good week or so, let alone anything else :)

Knowledge Is Power!

Stay well everyone

While its still looks questionable to their ability to do it during a traffic stop it still looks like they arent allowed to do it on a home on private property.
