The extent of a drug dog's smelling ability?

S

Do you think a drug sniffing dog would pick up them smell of my grow (7 plankt, 1kw) from about 300 feet away?

If so, would a dog give an indication or lead a police to my door or do they only give a cue when asked to smell something/an area. I'm not sure if they're "always on duty"

Finally, would that be legal ground in the USA for Police to begin looking around my property/around my house, to look for more indicaions to use to get a warrent?

I'm aksing because I have become aware that a dog in he middle of training to be a drug sniffing dog has moved into a house not too far from mine. I'm worried he may walk near my house and start giving signals.

I dont know about the USA ... but yes they are always on duty (because you cant turn an animal "off")

it has been trained to do that ... therefore it dosent know if its "on" or "off"

thats no reason for it to lead police to your house though ....if they do turn up its probably because they got tipped off and turned up with the dog for a reason to enter...the dog smells something ...can we come in .... I hope your ok ...

Peace :joint:

If it's always "on", wouldn't it detect something if it came near my house and give the "I smell something signal", leading police to my house or am I just paranoid?

Well, i'm fairly certain it wouldn't be enough for them to run up in your house, BUT it would almost certainly be enough to start an investigation. On the other hand, trained dogs respond to commands, so while obviously they cant turn off thier sense of smell hopefully they wont respond unless commanded to do so.

good luck,
may be a good idea to double or even triple up on odor control.

Peace,

thats what i think too. with my experience training dogs, the dog will sniff out the dope on command. ive been toking walking down the road and have the k9 unit pass or pull up to the light and the dog did nothing. that possibility is worth looking into further tho. as to what johnny law can and cannot do. Probable cause is a gray area that they love to use and its your word against his. Probable cause can get your house searched. We have no privacy in our homes an this country any more.

Im with Supermanlives.
My dog can scent game for an incredibly long distance, particularly if the game is upwind.
I would be very careful,S.T.
Which way is the prevailing wind in your area in relation to the new neighbor/dog?
I dont know if there are leash laws where you live but if you see the dog in question on your property perhaps you could request the owner/handler po-po to keep the dog tied up at home. A "scares the kids, craps on my lawn,Im allergic, chases my cat" type of complaint might be all you need to keep the pooch as far away from your property as possible.

the "i smell something " signal in this country is the dog sitting down ... so there would be little chance of it "leading" them anywhere ...and theyd probably assume it was tired from walking and take it home

So you mean don't exhaust to the exterior and make a nice carbon scrubber?? I don't have a CO2 system so I like to have a window open not too far from the growing area.

haha i just thought what if your grow fucks with the dogs training like the dog is always smelling your bud and it gets all confused hahaha you should just accedentily hit it with your car :dueling: cause the dog can smell it a trained drug dog can smell weed inside a penutbutter jar inside a tank of gasoline from 50 feet

dogs cant talk. even though dogs are trained, they may bark for a number of reasons. even if the dog leads the officer to your house doorstep, and the officer doesnt smell anything...he PROBABLY wont do anything. nothings stoppin him though.

edit: i almost forgot...however if the officer smells something, he can take a tour of your house:D

MHO, drug dogs are bullshit.. They respond on commands, and if the cop wants to search a place, give the dog a command to alert.. I've watched videos of dogs walking up to cars, sniffing, looking back to the cop, the cop says something, and all of the sudden the dog "alerted"... I'm not a fan of law enforcement.....

just be glad they use dogs and not pigs

dogs are not infallible or unbeatable, however

but if you ruin their nose with cayenne etc, they will criminally charge you :bandit:

I told him that I was wagering that particular dog was the one that had sat through drug dog training class in the back of the room, playing desk-top football with a Dachshund and a schnauser, and wearing a pointy cap... ;^>)

He also avoided doing the required homework, rather spending his nights playing poker with the other students.

i knew a teacher that would put cheyanne peppr and black peper by the student lockers to mess up the dogs ability to smell for a while

From what I understand, is that dogs trained to sniff out drugs aren't trained for the specific smell of the drug....but for smells or lack thereof that "shouldn't" be in a particular place. It's hard for me to explain, but say you had a spare tire filled with weed. The dog would alert due to the fact that it senses that this isn't normal.

I'm sure they also train them with actual scents of drugs too.

No way...
A dog performing a search is just like any other trick dogs are trained to do...
All the dog knows, is that this trick gets me a reward...
Hunting dogs are different, Hunting is instinctual behavior to Dogs...
Looking for drugs is not...
The scent of Game in the wild will be on everything the game has walked by... The hunting dog 'seeing' the path the game has taken by sense of smell... Dogs can catch scent in the air, but that is not how they trail game...
And far as prevailing wind direction, I would think the windless day would be of more concern, as scents swirled about town on the winds would be difficult to source...
Dogs search with their nose to the ground, not in the air...
The game that the dogs hunt, keep their nose in the air... to catch a whiff of a predator and ecsape before it's too late...

On a personal note, I've had dogs walk around my vehicle without alerting... Weed vaccum sealed in the trunk.... Don't know if it was a drug dog or a search and rescue dog or a bomb dog... It was near the airport...

It seems to me I've seen a lot of beagles as drug/bomb dogs at airports, especially if coming in from an international flight from a country the DEA considers a "High intensity drug trafficking area" like Central America.

I rarely see dogs when flying on domestic flights.
