After the whole Heavens Stairway scandal, I decided now maybe the time to pick up some new genetics. I didn't have much $ to spend and found a local store that was selling Willy Jack seeds. I had listed a few Willy Jack strains I was interested in earlier in this thread, and had decided on Rastaberry. Of course they were out of Rastaberry when I went in. I opted for the Tangerine (California Orange Bud X Chronic). My reasons for this choice was I needed a heavy yielder. Chronic has come as a high recomendation for high yield without the comprimise of quality buds. Rastaberry is Chronic X Strawberry cough, so I had the same thing in mind when wanting that strain. I'm happy with my selection though because I've smoked some cali-o before and remember the buds being like resiny sponges and very intense. Hopefully cali-o and chronic make a nice high yielding mix with that same great taste/buzz. I know I'm stepping into untested areas, I havn't seen many Willy Jack grows on IC. I'm willing to be the guy who lets you know how it is when I'm done. lol. Just yesterday I germed new new seeds though, 1 Grape and 1 DP Passion #1. They've both already broken soil and are doing well. So...although I'm anxiious to test my Willy Jack seeds they will have to wait another 3 months or so before they'll see the soil.
Stay tuned theres gonna be some nice pics comin soon
Thanks for the encouragement Mr GreenJeans, after getting a peek into your garden, your opinion is valued.
The grow is going well though I am disapointed with the progress of Passion #1. It's growth and maturity was alot faster last time around. At day 35 last time it was much more mature. Factors may be: temperature - My last passion harvest was back in Oct. and temps for the grow were between 18-24C (68-80F) during winter my temps have been about 13-20C (58-72F). Maybe the cooler temps have caused a slight stunt in growth.
Container Size - this is my other questionable factor. I'm using 10" nursery pots which with some investigation into common sizes seems to be 2 gallon or 7.7L. Last time I grew Passion #1 it was untrained and grew to 6ft in a huge pot (like 7 Gallon). I only harvested like 1oz on day 46 I think, it was a little early, coulda went a week or 2 more. Bud quality was excellent though. I'm wondering if maybe a 2G pot is not big enough for Passion #1 liking.
There are no problems to report with Hempstar, it is putting on trichs and bud weight like mad. It will be a rewarding plant, though I'm sure flowering will be around the 60 day period. This weeks Hempstar pics will be rewarding.
As for the seedlings, "Grape" bagseed didn't make it It cracked a tap root fine, but never shook off the seed, its growth stunted, and although I waited 4 days, nothing changed. It got tossed.
It may be a sign though. Because I had a grand idea. Spring is coming and I decided Passion #1 is not a great indoor strain for yield. I decided to germ 2 Tangerine (Cali-O X Chronic) and grow them next indoors. The Passion #1 I already germed will go outside somewhere once I find a spot for it. I figure if I grow it out for a month indoors it will be good and ready for an outdoors transplant come late April/early May.
Seems I've been posting pics about every 10 days, gonna keep that trend, pics will come on day 40. Today is day 34 I believe.
For anyone who is interested and actually watching my mistakes so that maybe you don't make the same...you are watching the right thread.
I was told right from the get-go not to use small pots for flowering:Like with everything.... I like to find out things the hard way, or for myself. I've mentioned in my first grow I ended up being a 6ft plant in my huge ass (10-15G) planter. I had the idea to keep light short and penetrating this time. Went with 2 Gallon nursery pots and got stung here. I started to notice Passion #1 slow down in growth around week 3, after it took off so well from the beginning. I should have known, it is an outdoor plant. It took well to LST and I didn't give it the proper root room it needed to return the favour of a nice yield. It would have too, better than last time at least. I just transplanted at 5 weeks flower. Both plants went in the huge ass pots. Maybe they can be saved, and pack on some extra weight because of my move, maybe it was pointless and its already too late.
What is done is done now, and I'm hoping for the best. It was a necessary move I needed to make to ensure the survival of at least one of my plants...I guess I shoulda taken a pic of the Passion #1 rootbind, but I was in too much a hurry to get those roots comfortably back in the soil. The transplants went very smoothly and gently and shouldn't effect much. Both plants still look very, very healthy...just stunted.
Seedlings:
I have a very high % germ and survival rate. I've always been very gentle and understanding with seedlings. Losing that "Grape" seed last week was upsetting, but...it was bagseed and the genetics are not gauranteed, so I should just let it go. However...3 days ago I germed my 2 Tangerine seeds. Both of them showed a nice tap in the paper towel method within 12 hours. I then gently used the tweezers to place them in a beer cup filled with the usual perlite/vermiculite/soil mix dampened by some distilled water. I finally see 1 popping up today. Prolly at least 36-48 hours after planting, which for me is the longest I think I've seen any take. I am worried about the second. I know sometimes this can take up to a few days...but I am being impatient which is very odd for me.
- Was it the right decision to transplant my rootbound/near rootbound plants at 36 days of flower?
- Am I just having a bad day/week and should not stress over my seedlings?
Call it a bad week, or maybe an educational week. Seems as a finish of a grow approaches you are always planning on how you can improve your next one. I'm looking very forward to ammending the mistakes I made with this grow. Last time I went too big....this time I went too small. By no means is Hempstar going to disapoint me though, and Passion #1 still has an opportunity to come back and surprise me if all goes well.
Ahhh the mysteries of 420! You're doing fine my man, just takes some time to discover all the variables that influence growth.
I would have transplanted the plant also - if you were gentle with the roots, she won't slow, and it should help her finish the grow.
On seedlings sometimes you win and sometimes you lose. A lot depends on the seed itself - sometimes they just don't germ well. Sometimes you might get 5/5 females, another grow you'll be 5/5 males. Sometimes they take a few days more to pop too, each seed a unique individual.
I've sampled some hempstar and it is very good. The Passion will still give you good bud, just not as much as before. It's all looking good from here!
Thanks again for the encouragement Mr GreenJeans, I needed it. I think I was just having a bad day and stressing about things I can always make improvements on. I was very gentle with the transplant and it doesn't seem to have any effect on either plant yet. I'm glad you got to taste some Hempstar...It's common around my area as bagweed and I smoke it very often. I love it, but it stinks up the house and its very couch locking. I'm hoping to take a lil off the heavy effect off through proper harvesting and curing.
I was just having a bad day there my last post. Both seedlings have sprouted and are doing excellent. Both have thick fuzzy lil stocks and are already working on their first sets of single spear leaves. My Passion #1 seedling is a little stretched, but it will be repotted soon. I can find an outdoor home for it when the weather breaks.
My thread has been moved to the Grow Diaries...I know everyone just wants me to shut up and show some pics, so tommorrow will be picture day.
Day 40 and they're looking good after the transplant. The humidity was up for a few days, it musta been the weather. Gonna get right to the pics:
Passion #1:
^^^ She's maturing rapidly and still a little light and airy. I need her to fill in a bit more. I also remember more trichs last time. Look at the pic back on page 2 of this thread (first post on page) you can see my last Passion grow the bud on day 35 was much more full and trich covered. Hopefully if she can hold out a few more weeks she can pack on some much needed weight.
Hempstar:
^^^She's coming along nicely and still has about a month to pack on some big time weight. Those pots I have them in are 20" so you can see how wide and bushy this plant is while only being 17" tall. Should get a decent turn out here.
Passion #1 is no longer being fed, and has been cut to straight up water from now on. Hempstar I suspect is going to take an additional 2 weeks or so to finish.
The Tangerine seedlings are doing fine. Trying to decide wheter to start a new thread with them in the veg box, or just post them here.
As always I'll leave you with a pic of the overall grow:
When I put the pics I took on my PC this morning after exiting the grow room, I was appalled at the fact I had just taken 52 pictures and I was keeping 10 out of the 15-20 that were even visible. I had bought my camera about 4 years ago when digital cameras were fairly new. I thought maybe it was outdated and shite, and maybe I needed a new camera. Before I tossed this old one I decided to do a little little research in the owners manual to see if I could get some better shots in manual mode. Sure enough after reading my cameras manual I learned of some of the amazing features it offered that I was oblivious to. So after reading my cameras manual and going back into the grow room I took 11 quick pics. I ended up keeping all 11. I am amazed...now you can see them as I do.
If you don't know anything about photography do yourself a favour and read your cameras owner manual. Your picture quality will increase by 100%.
Without further ado heres those pics: Passion #1:
Hempstar:
Well...Stick around cause now that the photographer is a slight bit better, the photography will be that much better.
checked the trichs for the firstr time today...heres what I got:
Passion #1:
Last time I grew Passion #1 I harvested at day 46 which was a bit early. Trichs were about 15% amber 60% cloudy and 25% clear.
This grow at day 45 is looking more like 0% amber 10% cloudy and 90% clear.
Cool temps and rootboundness musta slowed down its maturation. I'm kinda glad though, maybe they can make it to day 60 and put on some much needed weight. It's a little odd because most pistils are now oranging. If it continues to dissapoint me I'll be looking at only 14 grams or so yield.
Hempstar:
Still has a long way to go. It's fattening up very nicely, and I'm hoping to yield at least 30 grams off her. Trichs are nowhere near ready and sit at about 5% cloudy and 95% clear. It's going to be a long haul still. I think it may even go to day 70 or up.
More pics coming on day 50 and now that my photography is getting better I'll see if I can kill the orange glow since I don't wanna remove the plants from the grow room for pics.
Hiya tml! Yeah, rtfm amazing what one can learn!!! Well you sure learned it good  'cause your pics look great.
I'm partial to that hempstar - probably because gcg treated me to a sample and it was f-a-b-u-l-o-u-s, a real potent pain killer happy high! Looking to grow some out maybe later this year. Your passion1 look great too! Look like a happy harvest soon...
My first grow I turned 42 day trainwreck clones into 86 day plants - mainly due to frickin with 'em too damn much in early flower trying to give 'em the best . I've become more of a minimalist now, and my plants are getting closer to "normal" flowering times.
I'd love to be a fly on the wall when you suck down your first lung full of this upcoming harvest! You'll be grinin ear to ear...
I'm loving the Hempstar too. I was given 1 bean by a friend who told me that if I grew it, it would be the only type of mj I'd ever grow again. I don't believe it was even feminized, but turned out to be one hell of a lady. I can understand where he is coming from, especially from a commercial growers point of view. My Hempstar plant is about 17" tall. Maybe I should call it a bush, because its over 20" wide. I would say it would be a growroom mainstay for me, but I've yet to experience the complete joy of variety and I'm looking oh so forward to Tangerine. I've promised myself I'd get to buy 1 new strain each year and Hempstar may be a forerunner for next years purchase. Hempstar is available to me commercially often, and to tell you the truth I'm yearning for more variety.
Hempstars buzz is unbeatable for pain killing and heavy relaxing. Dutch Passion should put a "do not operate heavy machinery" sticker on the seed pack. I try not to smoke it during the day because then my productivity gets low. It also has an unmissable odour that can linger for hours. Passion #1 will be my daytime smoke. Very nice head high. Best tasting weed I've ever tasted. Very piney and spicey. Just wish I'd get more of it. My outdoors dreams are starting to get to me.
I had much better luck with Passion #1 last time, probably because I was a minimalist and now I go messin with stuff. I think I'll revert my ways to minimal for the future as well.
I'd love to smoke this harvest with everyone here on IC if I could. I'm sure your right I'll be grinnin for sure. Not only would I like to be a fly on the wall...but I'd love to live in your grow room!
Although not many respond in my thread here, it seems I have enough visitors that just stop by to check pics to keep it going.
Moving right along on day 50, I'm getting somewhat excited because I know its not going to be long now.
Passion #1:
Passion #1 (Amstel Gold) is estimated by Dutch Passion as a 6 week flower finisher. They say "at the first sight of flower" so I'll estimate that at 49 days or 7 weeks. The trichs are still just as clear as when I checked them last. I'd like to say this is a good thing to give her time to put on weight, but she hasn't been doing any of that since week 2 of flower. Trich production is up, and she's looking pretty sticky and has that nice spicey pumpkin smell to her. Although 60-70% of the hairs are reddening, trichs says they aren't close to done yet. This plant seems to be into growing little leaves in the budsites right now. I never had this problem with this plant last time, maybe this one is a freak or somethin. Regardless I'm going to take her for what she's worth and let her finish on her own time. I'm going to smoke it and enjoy it and let Hempstar make up for what she lacks in weight.
Whole Plant shot
long skinny bud...notice how spaced the tiny flowers are...at least shes sticky
Heres her main cola...its pretty leafy
This is about as close as I could get in
and now for my prized lady....
Hempstar:
Hempstar is being such a gracious lady. Her main cola is getting large and even some of the other buds are packing on enourmous weight and icky sticky trichs. It smells so sweet I can taste it on my tongue when I give her a little shake. Like the sweetest candy. I know what this bud is capable of in the buzz department and it looks like I may have an ounce or two to enjoy very soon.
Can you say F-R-O-S-T-I-L-I-C-I-O-U-S!!!
This is just about the smallest bud I could find under the foiliage...still sticky
The whole shot
King Cola (still got at least 2 weeks left too! Get Beefy Baby!)
My up-close shots (best I can do anyways)
Well...Thanks for stopping by and checking out my pics!
Comments and criticism always welcome. I'm always looking to become a better grower.
hey tml, good to see the girls havent been around much been to busy staying high i increased my smoking by quite alot which is wat i was afraid of but its all in good fun im almost out but not in regret just a lil pissed off but still. i have a 5 new babies waiting on the sixth should come soon they are very good looking i think im going to start a thread as soon as the 6 comes she just cracked this morining i had to replace a couple of seeds like 4 cause they didnt wanna pop and i got impatient looks like you should have some very good bud very soon
Budfather: Nice to see you are still around brother. I kinda figured you'd smoke that up fast. I'm learning to have another vegged plant or 2 ready to flower when my other 2 are done. Got my 2 Tangerines going now, they are about 2 weeks or so old. Good luck with your germination, what strains did you use this time? I hope that Oasis is doing you good, are you growing it again?
redrose: Thanks for stopping by and thanks for the compliment. All your encouragement is appreciated.
I'm concerned with Passion #1 and what to do. It has shown no new flower growth or fattening since week 2. The pistils are maturing rapidly (about 80-85% red already) yet the trichs are all as clear as day. There may be 10% cloudy if I'm lucky. I also have a seed forming in the top bud (the buds are so skimpy I can actually plain eye see it).
It is a 42-49 day flower plant and its sittin here on day 53 with all clear trichs, very red hairs, underdeveloped buds, and starting to seed. If I harvest it now...I'll be lucky to get 7 grams off this plant of very light airy bud. Which is really sad, because my first Passion #1 plant I grew I got great icky, sticky potent, yet airy buds. I got about 1 oz off her dry and was dissapointed. This time I'm very, very dissapointed. Hempstar should make up for the weight and my original plan was to only grow 1 plant at a time. So I should stop my bitching.
Here's my options:
1. Harvest it now, cut my losses and smoke the measley 7 or so grams it will yield me?
2. Harvest it now, use the whole damn plant to make cannabutter?
3. Try and wait it out, maybe trichs and buds will eventually catch up to the pistils in maturation (also let seed(s) on the plant to mature, giving back to my seed collection)?
option 3 is highly unlikely to happen, and even if I go for it will probably just cost me time. Options 1 and 2 seem to make the most sense, but its not at all what i want to do. I still have this hope in the back of my mind that they will just fatten up if given time.
Do you have any other options I can add to my list?
What would you do if you were in my position?
Any opinions would be appreciated here guys. Maybe you've been in a similar position. I need Help!!!
Well...it seems to me that my thread is going so slow nobody even answered my question. I even asked it in the Harvesting/Curing section. I still got no answers. Has noone ever had experience with a problem like this? Am I the first one to get a slowed plant from rootboundness?
I don't mean to beat a dead horse but, back on OG it was so easy to get multiple opinions and answers in the matter of minutes. I really miss that. Maybe theres just not enough members here, maybe LEO has scared off alot of people...I don't get it.
I love Cannabis websites. I love interacting with the people, making grow buddies, and just looking at the pictures. It's just not quite the same here, although I have met some great growers.
I guess what I'm trying to say is I won't be around quite as much anymore, and I am considering stopping the posting of my own threads and pics. It's not that I'm scared or pissed, its just I yearn for what we had on OG...and this just isn't the same.
I'll try and finish off this thread for anyone who possibly cares. I'll still be lurking the boards and adding my 2 cents where I see them fit, but this will likely be my last grow thread even though they are ever so addictive.
Passion #1 is still alive in the growroom, but since I had got no help or advice on what to do, I just figured I'd hold on to her for another couple days at least untill I make up my own mind what to do.
Hempstar is doing great still and keeps putting on weight. Every day she just becomes more full of trichs and thicker flower coverage. I wish I woulda took a clipping of this great pheno. DP estimates maturation time of 8-10 weeks. I don't think it will hafta go the whole 14 days, I'm probably looking at 10-12 days till harvest. I'm getting excited. I'm sure there will be over 50 dry grams of weight here.
Tangerine seedlings are no longer seedlings and are on their third node. They are strong and healthy. They will be getting their first dose of ferts soon. When Hempstar is done in 10-14 days, Tangerine is taking their place immediately. They will start their LST training tommorrow, and one will get cut for clones once I sex them next week.
