I heard about similar plans when I was still living in Rotterdam. In practice that would mean only a few coffeeshops would survive, because in the crowded city center of Rotterdam almost every coffeeshop is within the distance of 500 metres from some sort of school building. Ridiculous, as if just banning coffeeshops will make demand vanish...
Apparently, some people out there think the cannabis-culture is something as simple as a hobby, something you can easily discard or trade in for a new one. They just won't fathom cannabis also inherits a way of life, a state of mind if you will. Prohibition will not make it's followers less interested in the subject, it will only cause them to find other means of keeping their culture alive. And those ways will obviously be less easy to monitor or control by the government, so I fully agree with you G.A.; the situation will deteriorate if the whole cannabis-scene is to go 'underground'.
It's just populistic measures to increase the 'sense of security' with the masses, but it's not at all a solution to the problems associated with cannabis. In fact, the problems will only turn for the worse if these plans are to be realised. After all these years of experimenting with laws and tolerance this is what they come up with. Hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil. If only the gap between politics and the people would become smaller, but instead the politicians create a greater distance. A couple of years ago it already clearly showed that politics has lost touch with the people completely, now it seems the end is still not in sight. They'll continue battling the symptoms of the problems, not the problems themselves. How come our country is led by short-sighted individuals, or is that a common phenomenon in politics worldwide? If they were objective in their opinion they would first strike at the alcohol-industry, which takes credit for thousands of traffic-deaths, cases of domestic violence, hospitalisations and derailed individuals each year. But close down all cafés within the range of 500 metres from schools and see what it does to public opinion... I think it would lead to riots, but just because the average cannabis smoker is part of a minority group no one gives a sh*t. Sure a deranged society needs a black sheep to point at as the cause of all evil, but come on... let's give cannabis a break and focus on the problems that lead to an increased need for cannabis.
I hope the wine tastes bitter when the 'mighty' politicians propose a toast to their new cannabis-countermeasure plans... Keep wearing those blindfolds! You'll get there eventually... maybe.
P.S. Very nice indeed Esbe!
