no topping the plant is directing growth to two main stems if you FIM properly the main stem is still the main stem but will grow at a slower rate relative to the outside arms so you'll get an overall more even canopy on the same plane at trigger.
topping you just get 2 dominant branches.
if you were to properly pull that technique off and you effectively pruned you would increase your yields...a lot
