Got most of my parts bought or on order.
Went with the 1 ton harbor freight press I saw on that diy link.

I've been using 125 micron baggies I sewed to press in lately. I can't seem to get the hang of wrapping the pucks the way Heady does. This way works great for me and I love what comes out. I got a something like 15sq ft of silkscreen for about $13 delivered.

2.39 grams in, .54grams out

Still ended up with a little blowout

I got a few specks of flower in there because of the blowout, but far less garbage in the final product had I not used the little baggie.

If heat one of those puch press on an oven, load resin an press the hell out of it, they oil start running out.

That particular bag busted on both sides, the seamed side and the creased side. Sometimes it only busts on the crease, others on the seam, sometimes not at all. I have to make a mental note to stand on the bag for a second before I press it and see if that minimizes/eliminates blowout.

I think giving the bag a good mash before I press it has helped reduce the blowouts. Last night I did a similar size squish as what I posted yesterday and I did get a blowout but it was minor.

So with a little more confidence, I decided to pack a larger bag with 7.03 grams. I wrapped the stuffed bag with used parchment and stood on it in between the two heavy plates the press came with and bounced a few times.
I got 1.58 grams back for a 22+% return. Just one press. Here's what it came out looking like -

Just a couple specks of stuff that I could pick out if I really wanted to be anal, but I'm super happy with the way it is as it is.

Schrom lower buds mini run

Schrom lower buds mini run

I packed a smaller bag pretty fuckin tight with a bunch of Schrom lower unsellable/unsmokable buds. I was getting good at keeping the blowouts real small so I wanted to see how much I could really stuff in there.
This was a bit too much I think, but from small leafy buds, I'm pleased with the results.
The color is obviously a little greener than the rosin I've been pressing from buds from my headstash, but it came out nice enough that I would dab it for sure and not just pass it off to wifey, haha.

I'm thinking that a smaller micron screen for trim and small leafy buds would give a cleaner product, perhaps 70 micron or even a little bit smaller. In my mind, I see the leafy bits getting crushed with the press and then flowing out past the mesh with the rosin.

Our plates are 5x6. I can see making 4x5 or even 4.5x5.5 screens to process trim. It's still early and it's raining out. Maybe I'll sew up a quick one just to see how much trim it can hold. That's what I'm mainly interested in right now, and of
course I'll press it and report back.

30 grams in a 4x5 bag and no blowout, but....

30 grams in a 4x5 bag and no blowout, but....

but I'm pretty sure i didn't get a full squish. I pressed it 3 times with all of my weight and you can see a pretty good portion of the herbs didn't get squished like the centermost.

I used very old trim that I am pretty sure I had already drysifted a lot of. Pleased with the return but I think 30 grams is too much material to use. The 4x5 bag is a good size though. 20 grams would probably fill it out nicely and perhaps get a more thorough press.

I successfully squished an ounce with no blowouts..

I successfully squished an ounce with no blowouts..

Heady tried explaining it at least twice to me before, but I could never really wrap my head around using a cold prepress and coffee filter. I tried it before but always got blowouts. The problem I was having was that I was not wrapping it tightly enough. It seems counterintuitive to me to wrap your pressed patty or pack your filter bags tightly. In my head I always thought there was a need to leave extra space.

The metal shop guy made me a simple 3x3 mold and I stuffed an ounce of 5+ year herbs that had been sifted once or twice into it and did a cold press on it. I didn't apply full pressure, but a pretty good amount. The patty was about 1/4 inch thick afterwards. Then I wrapped the patty pretty much exactly like is shown in the first part of this video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DSPGr04PhGs. I slowly brought the press down and then slowly cranked the fuck out of it. The coffee filter didn't hold up completely, but I really can't say that it was a 'blowout'; all the herb was still contained but there were just a few small rips here and there after 3 full presses.

The yield was only 5%, but it was very very old material. It came out a very dark, but VERY shattery rosin. I was more interested in getting an ounce pressed reliably. Sorry I didn't take pics this time.

I may go ahead an move away from the silkscreen baggies. I can cold press smaller amounts right in the collar of my top plate. I have a washer that fits perfectly into it.

i nearly posted this morning to you Lapides to see whether or not you were pre-pressing. could tell from your pics it was a bit loose and causing those blowouts, the pre press is everything. youll like the results much better, more on ya

I have a prepress mold that makes a 3x4 puck, ive been doing about 1g per square inch and that seems to be good I've tried up to 3g per square inch but for me the 1g has been working, usually end up with 14g pucks to press to make it easy

it might be all the rosin i've been smokin but THERE IS A CRAZY AWESOME DRAGON IN THAT DAB!!!

facing left you can see the snout, brow, and ear, and the front left leg, then the back arches over the dab tool towards the viewer.
