I don't know Sparrow but here it is today. Maybe two less than three weeks looks like. Probably could pick it now and have a good time.

Help me convince her

Help me convince her

Hi everybody,

My wife and I moved to the Austin area from the Pacific Northwest last summer. We are enjoying the area.

I'm just an occasional user, don't like getting weed from the illegal drug trade (my last hookup was actually from my college son, who alas has graduated and is now doing some activism work in another country). I'd like to have a very small, stealth personal use indoor grow, but my wife is opposed to it as it puts both of us at risk. However, we have an empty guest house, plenty of room for a small, discrete grow closet or two. As I've researched things in Texas, here is what I think I've learned on this and other sites as a part of my attempt to persuade her. Please correct or expand on my interpretations.

1. Texas does not distinguish possession and cultivation. It is all about the amount, with various penalties up to a pound, and as long as its less than a pound on a first offense with no felony record its mandatory drug treatment

(Q: For cultivation, do they just weight the usable leafs and buds? Do they account for weight difference of wet vs. dry bud?)

2. I found a document on number of arrests for cultivation on a state by state basis, and for Texas it was very low.

3. I feel I am actually at lower risk of health and legal problems by having a very small grow (one mother plant, one female flowering at a time) than buying it off the street.

Any other good arguments, or are any of these flawed?

I think they are good arguments. Good that you are in Austin in comparison to more conservative cities/suburbs. Good luck on your decision.

Decisions and Persuasions

Decisions and Persuasions

Well, I wish it was MY decision, but we are a team and I love my honey. She just tends to worry too much and be on the paranoid side (which is why she seldom tokes). She also really prefers to be around me when I am straight, rather than stoned, so there is this unspoken factor as well. I think I am a fun stoner, but, well, I am rather different a person in that state of mind. But she says its fine if I buy it on the street, just would rather not me grow. Heck, one time she bought an oz for me from a friend of hers. But I would rather do a small grow than buy on the street.

Of course, the other factor, unfortunately/fortunately (for me) true as it may be, is I am white, professional, in my 50's, with lots of money, and the police are not truly equal protection under the law. So really, I have very little to fear with a small personal use stealth grow. Its just convincing my wife.

I know my wife has misconceptions about the energy use, size, fire risks, etc. of a grow. I am trying to educate her. For me, as its all personal, I care little about yield per square foot or costs, just about safety (legally and fire/electrical/whatever) and quality. I'd probably do an all CFL or just around 250W HPS grow for the flowering. I may first make the grow rooms and a test run with tomatoes or strawberries or something to show her how discrete it all is.

At the risk of being viewed as a "light weight" by this esteemed forum, last year I went through 1 ounce, total. In an entire year. So my needs are low. In college, I'd be lucky if that amount lasted a week or two. Of course I only had a couple of friends who smoked and I saw them infrequently, unlike the college days.

But my wife does love an respect me, and if I really tell her this is important to me and a matter for negotiation, she will yield. Just who knows HOW much it will end up costing me ... Not for the seeds or grow rooms, but for the wifey payolla! Everything is negotiable, and everybody has their price ... Hate to look at it that way though.

We just got home from a night on 6th Street in Austin with my recently 21 year old middle son who is visiting us from college for the Christmas vacation. We saw some very wasted young people on the yeast shit stuff (i.e. alcohol). My wife mentioned its absurd that the booze is tolerated, but the evil weed is forbidden. But I must confess, at times I do make the error of combining weed with booze which does make me "way too high", despite the philosophy indicated by my nickname here. Its really not a great combo.

if you go through an O a year, i'd say that it'd be far less risky to just pick up the entire O at once, rather than having the constant risk of being spotted with a grow. Also seems like it would keep your wife happy, which seems to be a lil more improtant than just picking up a new hobby.
If you must grow, my advice would be to set up a small stealth 150w cab and just grow what you need over three months then shut down for the remainder of the year. You'd get 1-4 ounces out of it, depending on the strain, style, and grow skill, and it would reduce your window of exposure.
just my .02

edit--

just re-read, and it seems that the idea of growing a legal crop first to illustrate the simplicity and stealthiness may work.

As with most issues of controversy in a marriage, it is my firm belief that you need to show your wife that your number one priority is her and her opinions. So just somehow let her know that her feelings on the matter are more important to you than getting the grow setup. As soon as you start bumping her down the ladder in terms of priorities, life's gonna get a bit miserable most likely. What I've found is that if you do this and show her that she matters more to you than growing (or even cannabis/cannabis use in general) then she will most likely eventually sway and give you a chance to do your thing without becoming upset.

Again, just my .02, as every relationship is different.

Thanks, I agree with your points and my need to honor my wife's view. She is fine with me smoking. The problem with buying is the quality and effect varies so much. My last oz wasn't all that great, strong, but with an odd "speedy" aspect so it was cereberal but not really calming. I'd like a small grow with a few small mother plants one mostly sativa, one mostly indica, and one of a hybrid for various effects depending on my moods and needs. But I've also considered your suggestion of just one quick grow a year.

We have a huge house, an empty guest house, lots of closets, attics, nooks an crannies so a discrete stealth grow box would not likely be discovered. So I have little fear in that respect.

I think ya'll should do it. I convinced my girl to let me do it (under the condition that I only have one plant) and its been the coolest project for me, a bit of an obsession. Every morning I look forward to checking in on my baby. But my girl also likes me sober better just like yours does 2high, so its a thin line ya know? I would say for your needs your idea of getting an indica dom and sativa dom is a great idea. when you have such few plants you can really give them some good attention and loving, and im sure youll be pleased with the results.

I'm in the Metroplex. And, when I say I'm in the Metroplex I'm IN right there in the D. It kinda sucks here, as I knew it would and is what prompted my growing experiment. Mine operation is personal as I relocated here and don't have a network like I did in my other city. Just want to say hi to TX growers b/c it just doesn't seem real accepting or cool here with my hobby. It's kinda hard to find folks like me or I don't know where to look. On the inside I'm a Deep Ellum (Deep Ellum can be cool again!) - counterculture type , outside successful corporate drone. It's gotta stay that way. You would never guess who I am by looking at me. Anyone else like me? It's so weird and conservative here. I'm kinda freakin' out. What is with Dallas?

CantBe2High, welcome to Texas bro, its not as bad as everyone thinks it is. Your idea to move to the Austin area was the best one you could make. I used to live there and i regret moving out to the west end of the state. The people are great, the live music scene is awesome, and the nature is beautiful.

as far as the grow situation goes: you need to make a mutual decision with the wife. it is imperative that you two agree on what you want to do. with a huge house it seems like you could pull off a stealth setup quite easily. low wattage (400 or less) could give everything you need and more. use the extra to cook with! or whatever. just make the decision that best suites your needs.

if you want my humble opinion, i think growing safely is a better bet than buying from a dealer. the only person who will know is you and your wife, and you two wont tell anyone. just be careful about buying your supplies if you do it. dont go to the hydro store in your own car (if you go hydro), order supplies to a PO box, not your house. etc etc etc. grow your own bro! dont fear the man, just keep him out of your business! if you are safe you should be ok. living in a huge house, having money, and being white and in middle age is a great combo. no one would suspect a thing!

but keep this in mind, its my motto: just because you are paranoid doesnt mean they arent after you.

One part of me wants to do it just as an act of protest. I totally agree in the long run this would be safer than buying, especially as I understand Texas laws, very small amount of indoor cultivation busts, even fewer convictions, and not to mention I can afford the best lawyer and it would take a real low probability accident to get busted. I'd just have a couple small mothers and do occasional micro-grows. Plus I am an engineer and know how to do safe electrical wiring and such so little risk in that area.

But I fear I have little chance of convincing the wife. When she sees me on this site she tells me I am just wasting my time -- I'm never gonna grow
:badday:

In reality, she also doesn't like it much when I get stoned, but she says if I find some and buy it she wont stop me. Also, my last oz I too often mixed the weed with the booze and got too plowed. It was a type of weed that was real "speedy" and the booze mellowed it some -- but mixing too much booze with weed isn't usually a good idea and I did go overboard at times.

We are glad Austin worked out for us. In the pacific northwest though I was just starting to explore some medical marijuana options that would make it legal to grow, but Texas of course has no such thing. Hopefully things will loosen up, but Texas really seems to in general have a stay out of my business attitude and I sense the worst case downside of a personal grow in the Austin area would be very minor. Maybe I'll talk with a lawyer and have them explain the risks to my wife. Or most likely just give up for now, and maybe laws will mellow. When I retire there will be less concerns of any risks to my employment. So someday ...

Texas marijuana laws are fairly loose. Anything under a pound, with no priors, cannot send you to jail. Also, the rules for a search warrant are good. Any information used to obtain a warrant cannot be more that a couple of days old.

This does not preclude the cops from lying about their information. Down here in Houston, they are too buisy with meth labs and prescription meds from our outlaw docs to worry about us pot growers.

Thank god for low police budgets, meth labs, and crooked MD's.

From my standpoint, I never open my doors to anyone I don't know, especially the cops (although they have never knocked). If they want in, let them kick the mudda****a off the hindges, in which case, they will find me spread-eagle on the floor.

Those damn Tasers hurt.

It's damn good to be retired and not have to take any more pee tests.

Agreed on the pee tests. Given I am in high tech, I thought they were not so common. My previous employer long dropped them. When I got my job interview in Austin I was very surprised a piss test was needed. My wife was really upset as she was the one who wanted to go to Texas, and I had been telling her I could keep smoking, no big deal. Fortunately with all the packing, loading, driving of the big move I pissed clean within about 3 days (got the good old Walgreens test), so it was no problem, but my wife has a long memory...

I'm actually a manager, and am doing some hiring of engineers, and NOW I see my employer is no longer doing the piss tests.

When I retire, I think my wife will not be so concerned, its really concern about job. I agree with all your views of Texas laws. Convincing her though ...

At this point, I am seriously considering gradually building a super stealth grow room on nights she is out playing Bingo or visiting her sister, and then growing some strawberries or tomatoes or something. If I can build it, and do a complete harvest without even HER noticing (and she is very observant), maybe she will relent, but at this point she is pretty adamantly against it ... sigh. And so many pretty pictures on this site!

What vegie/berry would be a good trial run for a grow system?

Bell pepper plants can get pretty big, more like a bush. Habenero, Jalepeno, and cayenne plants might stay a little smaller for a stealth box. You can always trim and train them as well.

WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT?

I am sorry. but this bit of incorrect information angers me. First off, I have lived in texas for over 20 years. After two possession charges, the first weighing in at a full 1.75 GRAMS, the second was a bag with a blunt's worth of brickweed. Both i was sent to county jail, both times I was given large court fees. Probation is given out automatically if your caught.

Historically in texas, punishment for marijuana possession has been more strict and nonsensical than most of the states. Let us not forget about Lee Otis Johnson, the black panther and activist. In Houston in 1968, he got 40 years in prison for passing a joint to an undercover cop. (http://www.hippy.com/article-156.html)

LET ME MAKE THIS CLEAR. TEXAS IS BY NO MEANS A MARIJUANA FRIENDLY OR LENIENT STATE.

Now I can already hear Texas stoners saying: "But they just passed a new law in congress saying that marijuana possession is now a ticketable offense!"

I too was ecstatic when I first heard the news, but I knew in this conservative state, that not going to jail for pot was too good to be true. here is an excerpt of the Dallas Morning News article that came out last monday, December 31:

http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/dn/latestnews/stories/123107dnmetmarijuana.28cfa42.html

"Texas lawmakers thought they could help ease jail overcrowding when they passed legislation allowing police to write tickets for misdemeanor marijuana possession and a few other nonviolent crimes, instead of hauling suspects to the clink.

But the new law, which went into effect Sept. 1, is being used only in Travis County. Prosecutors in Dallas, Tarrant and Collin counties never set up a system to process the misdemeanor citations and, they say, they have no plans to do so.

The new law gives officers the option to arrest, as they have been doing, or write tickets for possession of less than 4 ounces of marijuana.

For Greg Davis, Collin County's first assistant district attorney, one of his qualms with the new law is the perception created by ticketing for a drug offense, instead of making an arrest.

"It may... lead some people to believe that drug use is no more serious than double parking," Mr. Davis said. "We don't want to send that message to potential drug users, particularly young people."

For Ms. Moore, writing citations for marijuana possession also raises questions about prosecuting those cases.

How do officers prove that the person ticketed is the same one who shows up for court? Digital cameras or fingerprinting could be used, but that would be more equipment for officers, Ms. Moore said.

In addition to helping with jail crowding, the law in theory helps keep officers on the streets instead of making runs to the jail for nonviolent offenses.

In Dallas, jail overcrowding is a daily discussion, said Ron Stretcher, the county's director of criminal justice. The Dallas County Jail has a history of being understaffed and overcrowded, which has led in part to repeated failed state inspections.

As a result of the cramped jail conditions, county officials hold monthly meetings to discuss the jail population and possible solutions, including the idea of ticketing for some misdemeanor offenses. But they believe more research is necessary.

Mr. Stretcher said that just because Dallas County is not currently applying the new law does not mean that officials never would. But deciding whether to implement the edict is not simply based on county officials' desire to ease jail overcrowding.

"These are not just tickets. These are crimes that need to be appropriately dealt with," Mr. Stretcher said. "We want to make sure we get them back to court to stand trial. We want to make sure we don't miss folks who might have prior bad acts."

"It's not about emptying the jail. It's about making sure that we have room in the jail for the people who need to be there," he said.

Rep. Jerry Madden, R-Plano, who authored the legislation, said it's likely that some counties are taking a wait-and-see approach, looking for someone to lead the way.

The Travis County Sheriff's Department is the only law enforcement agency in the state known to be using the new law. The Travis County Sheriff's Department lobbied for it, in part, because of their problem with jail overcrowding. But it's also a way to work more efficiently, said Roger Wade, the sheriff's spokesman.

"We understand that there are times when it's just easier for everybody involved" to ticket, Mr. Wade said. "You still have that arrest stat. You still have the court date. It just saves time and resources [not] bringing someone all the way down to the jail."

Mr. Wade said officers there began writing citations for misdemeanor marijuana possession and other approved misdemeanors on Dec.1 and have encountered no problems. But he said it's too soon to determine how often officers are ticketing vs. arresting for these misdemeanor offenses.

Unlike Dallas County, Travis County already had a direct filing system in place that made it possible to quickly implement the new law. When someone is arrested, the case is automatically assigned to a prosecutor and paperwork is filed with the county or district clerk's office, Mr. Wade said.

With the high price of gasoline, Mr. Wade said, writing citations also saves money because officers don't have to drive into Austin from the county's outskirts to put a suspect in jail.

"There are folks that think we are being soft on crime because we are just giving tickets," Mr. Wade said. "We are still hard on crime. We believe if we can save resources and have the same affect on crime, then we should take advantage of this."
--------------------------------------------------

So if you live in Travis Co. lucky you. But for the rest of us, stay paranoid and safe! From my experience Texas police in bigger cities are much more reasonable and are actually trying to catch the right criminals. But in suburbs where the police have a large budget and not many large crimes, they get bored and use their power the wrong way.

Well maybe :)

Well maybe :)

Your post was kind of a Texas buzz kill -- or would be if I had anything to get buzzed on :)

But have laws changed much in the past 40 years? I know there are redneck cops in parts of Texas. But the Norml site indicates less than a pound with no priors is probation with mandatory drug treatment and no distinction between plants or processed weed. Yes, cops will go overboard if they really want to throw the book at you.

Of course I have a few things going for me. Don't look like a hippie, have lots of money, a totally private house (2 of them), a totally fenced and gated property, and of course in the Austin area. Also, at least statistics I found for 2005 indicated grow busts in Texas were much lower than many other smaller states.

Certainly Texas is no stoner paradise. I've been telling my wife we may need to retire to a state with liberal medical marijuana laws.

I see there have been recent attempts in the legislature to allow medical marijuana in TX, but they haven't gotten far and doesn't seem to be likely soon.

But my point is having an ounce of weed in your house in TX, or having a Lowryder plant growing is all the same in TX. And with reasonable precautions the chances of getting busted for one or the other should be the same. So the alternative would be -- not toking! Nooooooooooooo!!!!!!

Also, note that most busts occur OUTSIDE one's home. I never, ever toke in the car, in public areas, just in the privacy of my home or a friends home.
