As long as you can keep your container cool, 100 watts will be a lot better than 52 watts.
Looking forward to seeing them fill out!

I was thinking of the elbows too, but what do you think of just cutting a long strip of cardboard out and covering it from the inside. a triangular prism with the triangle sides open towards the corners of the bottom of the bin.

The bins are secured by gravity. it's sturdy enough to withhold the force of a full grown adult tripping and stumbling into it ;)

If I understand what your suggesting for a light trap, it sounds plausible. You would have a long flat piece of cardboard sealed across the corners inside the bin with a little triangular piece blocking the top and open at the bottom where the air would come into the bin. right? Would you have an air shaft like that at all four corners? Where do you see cutting the air holes.

Surprising that the bins are balanced like that one on top of the other. No light seeps between where their lips meet? I was thinking maybe a quick release clamp of some kind between the handles or a miniature bungee cord around them. Gravity is convenient though.

I think the whole set up is ingenious. I love it.

I've got a plastic garbage can in my closet with one plant growing almost contemporaneous with yours. So I'm very interested in how yours is getting along.

Looking good!! go for one more bulb if you can, more light is only good.
Do you know how warm it is in there?

after 4 hours of being on, the midway point (6-8 inches above plant) was 82F, the air exhaust was 85. couldn't get temp around the lights, but nothing felt hotter than it should be. there's always room for another fan if need be.

this is going to be for personal use. not too worried on yield as much as quality. seems like the average gram/watt on these LED bin grows is right around 1. granted this isn't exactly the same LED setup as any of the ones i've seen.... i'd be happy with .5 g/w as long as it is quality. and that is basically what's being tested with this bin. but all babbling aside, do you think upping the wattage would increase quality as well as yield?

the great thing about the bins is they are easy to customize.

well, i already have the 2 vents on the sides. so the cardboard strips would be leaning against the same "wall" as the vent but on the inside. so that would create 2 triangle openings towards the inside corners. essentially using a T instead of an elbow.... poor man's style ;)

my first thought to secure it was just using tree wire. the handles already have 2 holes in them that are the perfect size for that. but gravity is free and effective in this case.

how big of a can you got? what strain? lights? growing medium? haha

*EDIT* thanks for the kind words

Quality is firstly dependent on genetics, and secondly on grow environment.

Good genetics will produce awesome quality if grown well and still decent quality, tho quantity probably suffers, if the environment isn't dialed in.

If the genetics produce weak bud, then no matter how perfect everything grows, you are still going to have weak bud.

100w is going to be better than 52w in terms of available light to the plant. That should result in increased production.

well, lets say we have 3 clones going under the exact same conditions as one another. the only difference is one of them is under 100 watts, the other is 150, and the last one is 200. which one will have the highest quality? or would there not be any difference in quality, just yield?

Quality depends on the care you give em and genetic, yield is care and nutes and light penetration. I personally prefer quality over quantity.

so that's 1 for just yield?

oh and bootea: going to use, not sure what it's called, but it's padded or foam tape for the space between where they meet. just put a strip down along the top of the bottom bin. already know it works, just haven't gotten around to doing it yet on this.

No that's one for both, lol I think you'll be pleasantly surprised come harvest time, just keep doing what you're doing your pics show healthy happy plants and they'll reward with dank buds.
Keeping your plants healthy and happy gives you great results just keep doing what your doing and you'll be happy.

I didn't understand what you were saying about a light trap after all.
Yeah, that makes a lot of sense to have a length of cardboard leaning against wall along the bottom, and more simple to use the openings you already have.

My garbage can bin is 21 in. diameter at the top, 17 in. at the bottom and 28 in. high. My rough and ready integral cylinder calculations compute to 4.6 cubic ft. of volume. My strain for this trial is an unknown Nirvana freebie under a 23 watt 2700 CFL. Growing medium is organic soil after Burnone's mix #1 with an extra amount of my own home produced ewc. Just yesterday I expanded the light to 4 CFls two 2700k and two 5700k about and inch and a half away from the tops. The plant has been topped and tied to the rim of a 3.5 gallon pot. Its been about 33 days from sprouting,
I wanted to see what and how well I could grow with what ever I could cobble together before I committed seeds of some classic strain like white widow. It has to be super stealthy.

I'll be interested to see the results you get with your led light in your lumen mix. Your screen is artistic.:tiphat:

i won't worry about changing anything now then. i'll just be patient and let the plant tell me if i should upgrade the bulb for the next go 'round. i keep getting ahead of myself haha. first time with enough space to do more than just pop a few seeds and wait for 1 harvest. thanks for the encouraging words.

sounds like it'll produce some pretty good flowers. is it a metal can or plastic? if plastic, how thick is it? couple of the bins i have were pretty thin and i ended up with glowing storage bins haha. had to paint the insides of those ones. any fans, vents, or odor control in your can?

The garbage bin is plastic and black. I put a caliper on and edge to answer your question, and theplastic is 3/32nds of an inch thick. Totally opaque. No lid , it just blew onto the patio one windy day. I put it out in the curb for a month no one claimed it. There is plenty of inspiration as to what to do with it on IC you included. I cover it with dark cloth tent like. The lights suspended on nylon thread. No odor control as yet. Only the mildest smell of skunk, as in road kill skunk, if you lean in to smell the tips. I have a little wall air filter that plugs into a socket I'll try that if I smell something coming from the closet. I have a 6 inch inline duct fan I haven't deployed. It moves 250 CFM. Thats 4.1cfm per second. The bin is roughly 4.6 CFM so a change of air almost every second. That may be excessive, but if I raise a tent above the whole bin it might be just right we'll see. This is an evolving grow. Whats needed right now is humidity, I have wet towels on the floor of the bin surounding the pot. Humidity is 52%. temp. 77.

As to prettygood flowers we shall see.

haha, that's an awesome back story for a grow bin. totally meant to be! are your wall plugins carbon filters by chance? was thinking about getting a couple of those for the room rather than putting filters in each bin. sounds like you got airflow covered haha. i've been putting a top layer of coco coir in the pots to help with humidity directly around the plants. once it dries out, spray it wet until the next watering. it will get to the point that you won't have to mist between watering. <-- have no science to back this up!!! just something i do.

i put this thick black fabric on one side and plastic on the other side hung around my grow boxs with a little on the floor and it keeps any stray light out the fabric \came from wally for like 4 bucks a yard

I misplaced the filter that came with the air cleaner (its called True Air), but they do sell a pack of three carbon filters for 11 bucks to filter out pet smells. One lasts for 90 days they say. Good for one grow. Might do the job hanging over the rim of the bin. This size $18 is probably meant to plug in near a kitty litter box. They picture a puppy. They show one for a room for $30 with carbon filters available. I haven't tried either one yet.

Do you use the coco coir like a mulch? I bought a compressed bail of it on an impulse and never used it. How thick do you have it around the plant(s)?

Ona gel will work great for stray smells out of your grow bin.

they come in different scents; does it eliminate odors and replace them with whatever scent you get? I like the smell of my room, i just want to be able to open the windows at night. so, just looking to decrease the smell, not eliminate/cover up/replace it. have/do you use it? can you give me a detailed review? :)

i would have an interest in a couple of the blocks, maybe put them on the window sill? think that would work?

good thinking. i used paint on the other bins cuz mylar is frustrating to work with in small spaces. draping clothe over the sides/top would be way easier. or maybe i could tape the mylar to cardboard that is cut to fit the bin perfectly.....damn. i'm actually going to do that in the next bin. thanks for helping with that thought process haha.

thank you for adding the prices. like i said above i just want to decrease the smell to where it's not overpowering, not eliminate it. i also want to do it for cheap and keeping it under $50 would be ideal.

for this plant (sour cream, dispensary bagseed) i used a 3 inch layer of coco on top of the soil in a 5 gal pot. i've also got a little bit mixed in with the soil. all the smaller pots (1 and 3 gals) i use a 1 inch layer. i get the coco coir that is already fluffed out, so i'm not sure how the compressed bricks work.
