... I also started to give them the stimulants from bionova, I find it helps to give them a strong set of roots faster (see picture from planted cut) and make them more reselliant, and as Karma says, the bigger the roots, the bigger the fruits 🍑!

Question:
When you say bionova, do you mean something high in PK, or more of a veg nutrient blend?

The light is a broad spectrum white LED, marshydro FCE-6500 but we cut the frame and tailored it to run dimmed at a higher efficiency. We measured the spectrum and intensity for people who are interested I can post more about it later.
I just received a tester pack and will be getting a grow log started early January after holiday travel . I also have a mars 6500 so am interested in your results when you have a minute to post them. Thanks!

Best wishes everyone for 2024!

Time for an update again. The melon ZiZi's are growing like dense shrubberies and stay very short. I had to trim back some sd bx2 phenos up to three times to prevent them from running in the lights, where the melon ZiZi's just almost kept the same height. They are however putting out a ton of branches on the sides and turning into little bushes with healthy white roots coming out on the bottom. Although they're relatively healthy they aren't as happy as I would like them to be, I assume its the low VPD and slow airflow is the issue and causes them to hang their leaves. I reinstalled the fans (which I still had to do anyways), and will try to increase VPD too. Furthermore I noticed the presence of some fungus nats, so I will put out some nematodes together with predatory soil dwelling mites, this always worked wonderfully for me. While I'm at it I will order some sachets for predatory canopy mites to make sure there won't be any pest outbreaks during flowering, which I'm planning on switching too later this week. Because of the afore mentioned height issue, I am happy to keep them small and bushy, which is also the reason why I just topped them. It is getting to dense in the tent so hopefully we can remove the males within a week or two. I also had to do some leaf removal as all the side shoots kept being completely shaded.

💚✌🏻

Last week I switched to flower, and now they're starting to show sex. So far 5 are male, and removing them is a great relief as it is getting very densely packed in there. There is barely any stretch and the internodes are stacked together very densely. The stems are very thick and strong but all the shoots are covered underneath massive fan leafs. I have found the same type of large fan leafs while growing other melon crosses. These fan leafs are not only large, but the fingers on the leafs are very wide. Interestingly enough on this particular zizi cross, a majority of the large fan leafs have an extra mutated finger that sits in the middle, occuring on both the males and females. Another difference compared to other melon crosses is the appearance of a red vein in the middle of the large fan leafs. This red vein is on the top side of the leaf, in contrast to bottom where I more commonly found this trait. Not all of the melon zizi's show this red vein, and I think they have this trait from the z x zizi f2. Based on @Karma G post it seemed like this is the case for the pheno he used for the zowahh v2.0. In this grow their is only one plant that shows this trait throughout the entire finger length of the leaf, and the leaves are generally smaller, as well as the entire plant. I assume this wil be a more Z leaning pheno. The majority of the plants look all very similar in appearance and showing large fan leafs. Hence stripping leafs now is a must and the 5 fans on top of the led fixture barely provide enough airflow to reach the lower canopy. I think I spotted a few spots of PM, so I will make a spray of food grade potassium bicarbonate and strip the plants down for more airflow before bud formation starts.

Although they Melon zizi's grow healthy, I find it hard to keep them thriving with the leaves praying. I don't know why they dont, temperature is around 23°C, humidity around 55 RH and a light intensity around 800 PPFD. The sour diesel have their leaves up praying, but the melon ZiZi's just seem to refuse to do so. Maybe the stripping down of large fan leaves will make a change as a lot of the new leaves and branches are now over shaded.

The majority of the plants smells not particularly in any kind of direction but like general young cannabis plants, apart from a few that smell very meaty like liverwurst with a spicy hint. It's very obvious and I can distinguish them blind from the other just on smell.

Very curious to see how the flowers are going to develop on these Ladies! Keep you posted in the next one

5/14 are females

I selected three male plants that stood out the most and placed them to a different tent with only males that are flowering for pollen collection and storage.

Pheno 1: Super intense sweetness, like candy, with a very strong infusion of herbs like you have in these mountain pastile candies, I dont know the name of these herbs, but it reminds me of tyme and salvia, but the foreground is crazy sweet like candy, almost like the sweet skittelz smell.

Pheno 2: Intense sour with some sweetness, but nothing sour like sour d, completely different sour, more like citrus juice sour, but no tangie or citrus smell, smells straight up like the original sour skittelz candy, and not like the Z strain.

Pheno 3: balanced mix on pheno 1&2

*They are now flowering and I'm saving pollen for in the freezer. I do notice the smell profiles are rapidly changing

The others males are thrown away.

Now I noticed that one of these males is actually becoming a female. All the pollen sacs in the nodes are still there but she is making female flowers with pistils. (The mixed pheno)

Okay now the 5 females. It feels a bit like a pity I let them stay so tiny shrubberies. At least I have well rooted cuts from them which I will reveg and keep until I have found a pheno that I like, which I then might rerun in full glory.

The females aren't too happy still, I have tried to play with light intensity but it didn't seem to matter, so I left the lights around 900 ppfd for now.

Three females smell rather similar, very fresh and plant like still, with a hint of sweet pickles

One smells very intense and is the same pheno that smelled like spicy meatyness, liverwurst and now turns very sweet too

IMG_20240202_235040 (1).jpg

The other one smells like zkittlez sweets, with a gassy punch to it, and also looks very different from the rest, with broader and smaller darker leafs reminding me more of the original Zkittelz.

We had a visit from the landlord, hence the radio silence 🤐

Fortunately the plants have been moved to a new home, before the landlord found out, but they had to spent a week in the cold and darkness, so I'm not sure if they're even going to make it.

before moving I took some quick pictures of the ladies

the flower smell is very different from the earlier smells on the stem rubs, and plant #7 is still the loudest followed with both #12 & #5, but where #12 is more similar to #7, #5 is very different, it is also the only one with smaller leaves and the only one turning purple. #5 is turning more sweet and #7 more punchy and sour
