Hey everyone,

I'm an indoor/outdoor gardener who just recently made the switch to organic soil. My goal is to grow the cleanest and healthiest meds for myself and my family here, and I can say it's been an epic journey into living organics. I'm seeing completely different results compared to my grows in the past with bottled nutrients... healthier plants, less inputs, and better results as a whole. Who would've thought...

Growing in organic soil and finally comprehending how the living system works came with an epiphany for me, and it hit like a brick wall. It was relatable to so many things in life, including the similarities between plant health and human health. When I made this relation, I realized that this was the path that I needed to pave. Since then it's been a never-ending learning experience, and an addicting one at that.

I encourage anyone and everyone to contribute to this thread with questions, advice, shared experiences, and knowledge of all kinds. All I ask is to keep it positive, no negativity allowed! Enough talk though, let's get into it already:

Just found this thread, as they say when the student is ready the teacher will appear. Just started reading "Secrets of the Soil" by Tompkins and Bird, and look forward to following this thread. Your girls look gorgeous. Well done.

Everyday is a learning experience more like an obsession! I'm going to pick up the teaming with microbes book and teaming with nutrients book ASAP anyways have you ever looked into Tga subcools soil mix? I understand it isn't a true living soil but it is organic. As far as right now I use roots organic with worm castings kelp meal bone meal blood meal cottonseed meal Peruvian and Mexican bat guano mushroom compost perlite I'm still having troubles w it though is there any kis soil miss you could recommend for me? I like to do sea of green style grows I use 4"x14" one gallon tree pots any information would be greatly appreciated keep up the amazing work my friend

Thanks buddy, I appreciate it! It's literally an endless pit of knowledge, isn't it?

TGA's recipe is the first recipe I used when I got into soil, but I've learned that there are many things in there (guano, feather meal, blood meal) that aren't the best form of the nutrient he's going for. IMO his mix is far too hot, and I've had trouble getting my plants to fade properly in flower because of it. It ended in some bad tasting smoke that was too high in N residuals...

In a living soil that is full of life the plant can operate off of very little nutrient input, this is getting the plant to be strong and grow according to the soil.... where on the other hand, when using TGA super soil full of fast release nutrients like Blood meal etc..... the plant doesn't have as much of a choice, the nutrients are there and the plant is lazier and doesn't isn't required to work as hard to feed itself. As flowering wraps up and there is still Nitrogen in the soil.... the plant will still go through senescence and stop feeding on nitrogen, that being said, if the soil is still full of fast release nutrients it won't be able to do that... That is why many feel that a living soil recipe is a better way to go, using whole plant inputs like kelp and neem instead of single ingredient, fast release nutes.

When using living soil, the pot itself contains all the biomass available to the plant - so bigger is better with this style. If you're going SOG then use 5 gallon pots at the minimum to prevent problems, since plant health begins to degrade once the upper mass of the plant grows larger than it's root mass. Massive root mass = healthy plants

Here's the recipe that these plants are being grown in:

1 pt. Peat Moss

1 pt. Rice Hull

1 pt. Compost

mixed with:

Acadian Kelp Meal @ 1/2 Cup per cubic foot

Neem Cake and Karanja Cake 50/50 Mix @ 1/2 cup per cubic foot

Crustacean Meal @ 1/2 cub per cubic foot

Gypsum Dust @ 1 Cup Per Cubic Foot

Brix Blend Basalt @ 1 Cup Per Cubic Foot

Glacial Rock Dust @ 1 Cup Per Cubic Foot

Oyster Flour @ 1 Cup Per Cubic Foot

Thanks for the recipe can you use this mix in 2 weeks or a month or does it require a longer cook time? Is it possible to grow in say.... 2 gallon pots and feed with teas more frequently?

You can use 2 gallon pots, just don't veg for more than 10 days to allow for enough root space for the plants to work with. I wouldn't recommend this though, I've seen first hand the level of health go up the bigger the pots I used. 5 gal is the smallest I'll veg in, and 7 gal is the smallest I'll flower in. It's not like hydro where you can grow huge plants from a small pot, we need 3x as much space in living soil and that's the biggest misconception with beginners IMO

Xtreme is my #1 go to, they're the only guys who cultivate their own mycorrhizae. They actually provide for dozens of other inoculant companies that sell their product under another name... def something you want in your tool box when transplanting. Mixing it into soil mixes is a big waste because roots need to come into direct contact with the spores to for relationships with them, when mixed into a soil mix we're only hitting abut 30% of the spores with our roots.

I get Canadian peat moss by the 2 cubic foot bale, nothing special and it's worked just fine for me. I'm actually not sure about the different qualities of peat, I'm sure the best is out of Canada though.

Ordered the Extreme sample care package last night. $17 in shipping and handling. Not complaining just letting everyone know the cost of a free sample pack.
