Wow! Great info folks...amazing what you can find out when you ask the right people.

Snow Crash, let me apologize for missing your link to portland hydro in your first post, I somehow didn't see it before searching google. Brain fart!

Let's continue this interesting conversation...

Naomi's is temporally closed. Les schwab needed to clear the property. Basically put her business on hold. Her inventory in various people's yards. Iirc she used to work for concentrates. A truly awesome person.

Just to update this, ConcentratesNW has moved to Hwy 224 just south of the Clackamas Town Center next to Bob's Red Mill.

They will also give you more of a discount when buying in bulk, this forum is another reason we need our own amendment co-op in Oregon or at least PDX!!

I can't believe all the neighbors I have in here. Funny to read about Milwaukee and Hilsburito.

Concentrates NW now has these soil amendments in bulk for the prices noted per pound (as of April 1, 2012)

Alfalfa meal - .60
Azomite - .60
Blood Meal - 1.30
Bone Meal - 1.00
Basalt Rock Dust - .55
Cottonseed Meal - .80
Crab Meal - .95
Feather Meal - 1.20
Fish Meal - 2.00
Greensand - .65
Kelp Meal - 2.00
Linseed Meal (aka Flaxseed) - .85
Dolomite Lime - .30
Calcite Lime (aka Agricultural Lime) - .35
Sulphur granules - 1.75

Compare that to the prices on the boxed versions of these soil amendments from Down-To-Earth, Dr. Earth, E.B. Stone, Black Gold, etc. - pretty amazing differences.

Hey...just read your update. Thanks for providing that info, and nice to find someplace that sells by weight. I'll have to meander down that way soon.

Hey People !

I've been going to Roots for years, even back when they were on N. Gay Ave. Good guys.

I like going to Bob's Red Mill for large purchases of Organic Black Strap Molasses.

My new favorite for the last few years is Bloom Garden Supply on NE 20th, just North of NE Sandy. Great store, selection, knowledgeable staff, helpful, informative. Large parking area and a bay door you can drive into to load up your purchases. Check them out.
They do have regular great sales and watch for their blow-out anniversary sales each August. Big tents with lots of vendors giving away lots of samples and information. Food and drink too. My go to place. Yeah!

Am I the only one who is un-satisfied with concentrates? I went to a location that was kinda small (like the meat section at Costco)with barrels of amendments everywhere. Seemed more likely that I would still have to go to a hydro store elsewhere to get specialty things like pumps or lamps.

Correct - Concentrates is a legitimate organic farm supply store - not a hydro or 'grow' store where you get f*cked on each and every sale. The last thing that Portland needs is another grow store to be run by the unemployable, i.e. scammers and general clowns.

The 'barrels of amendments' are a service to home gardeners by offering a dozen or so popular items in bulk, i.e. small amounts. Concentrates even tosses a bone to the stoner crowd by carrying Black Gold (snerk) and Vital Earth's line of bullsh*t.

Their main business is selling full 50# bags of of amendments: kelp meal, Canadian Glacial rock dust, Basalt, Azomite, K-MAG, Solubar, organic soybean meal, organic fish meal (Naturox), organic fish bone meal, Potassium Sulfate, organic flaxseed meal, organic alfalfa meal, professional Sphagnum peat moss (Alaska Peat), Perlite, Pumice, organic fish compost (Oly Mtn), organic Malibu Biodynamic Compost, mycorrhizal powders (endo & ecto), soft rock phosphate, greensand, Sunshine Mixes, legitimate organic coco from Sri Lanka, organic fish hydrolysate, gypsum, organic crab meal, Dolomite Lime, Limestone, Calcite Lime (aka Agricultural Lime), bat guano (55 lbs. for $60.00) etc.

Products that 'grow' stores can't carry because their distributor, National Garden Wholesale (aka Sun Light Mfg.) won't allow it unless it's in cutesy little boxes from Down To Earth to better screw customers. A 6 lb. box of Oyster Shell Powder (Down To Earth) at Portland-area grow stores is $9.99 (MSRP) - the price for 50 lbs. from the exact same manufacturer (Pacific Pearl) is $9.50 at Concentrates - those cardboard boxes cost some serious money!

Did you even bother to look at a price sheet?

On CCs advice, we went to concentrates when in p-town for doctors appointment.
we spent a bit more than we'd planned, but still managed to get enough for a dozen YARDS of soil. and a quarter ton of chicken feed(we made it from ingredients there, and its higher proteirn, better eggs, and WAY cheaper
i only regret loading so much in the back of the truck...we were VERY low, and a half ton pickup is only supposed to carry ....wait for it.,..A HALF TON. thats only 20 bags

but whats not to like?

The main reason I was not satisfied with concentrates was because I was looking for horticultural grade elemental salts in raw form-which they do not carry. But if I was doing my own soil blend or feeding cows and chickens sure that place rocks- literally.

waiting for a new AC to be delivered, but holy hell it is hot out

I went to Home Depot at noon, they are sold out of stand alone ac units at every store

standard tv and appliance has a ton of them, and they are a local company, a heads up if you will
