Strawberry Cough Goes Outside

I transplanted the Strawberry Coughs and Bogglegums into 3.5-gallon pots a few days ago. Got to see some nice root systems in the works, particularly with the Bogglegums:

cocoroots.jpg

For the most part, the plants are looking excellent. The SCs are busting out their first little hairs, but the sex of the Bogglegums remains to be seen. Even if they're male, I'll take some pollen, because I love the structure of these plants. Short and beefy!

A BOG from the top:

One of the Strawberry Coughs is exhibiting something weird--at first glance it looks like an iron deficiency:

With the big pots, watering has become a significant chore. I'm gonna get a garbage can to mix up big batches of nutes--maybe throw in an old submersible pump and attach it to a hose and watering wand to simplify watering.

The forecast is outstanding--it's gonna be sunny and in the low '70s for the rest of the week!

Hey NPK,

great thread so far, i wonder how i missed this thread, should be real interesting. hm a bit strange about those top leaves looking bleached? do you have no theories that could explain it?

anyway the rest are some very healthy looking plants, great root porn too,

yeah a pump and hose are great to hand water plants.

Wow, your plants love the outdoors. Since you just transplanted they should get real big, exspecially sp* if they stay outdoors as long as possible, just watch out for rainy wheather. I'll be watchin, Nice grow .. Peace

Hiya Gaius, thanks for checking in. I'm kinda stumped about the yellowing--its pattern is very specific, and it's only showing up on new leaf growth (including new leaves at the bottom of the plant). It really looks like an iron thing to me. It's not happening with any of the other SCs, and hopefully it'll sort itself out going forward. I just started using coco-specific bloom nutes today.

Hey there Arab2! The weather in my region has been phenomenal the past few weeks and the plants are showing it. It's officially spring!

if he builds a frame and covers them every night for 12 hours, he can still make them flower, even with the days slowly getting longer. it's a lot of work and means being there at 6 am and 6 pm every day for at least 6 weeks. unless you automate it.

easier to do what 20k said and put them in the ground and let them rip.

the imbalance will clear up fast with the coco nutes and the right ph. strange that only one id doing it.

20kw, you may be right, but my personal experience says otherwise. Last year I put out plants in early April (with the intent of a fall harvest) and some of 'em autoflowered on me a couple months later. I put these out three weeks ago, so I'm gambling that these plants are gonna put out in a couple of months even if the day length is longer than 12/12. Seems a good bet with a short-flowering strain like Bogglegum, and the Strawberry Coughs are already kicking into early production.

If they do show signs of revegging, I'll figure out a way to get 'em in my flowering room. One reason I put these out early is that room is crammed full right now. :smoke:

oh. well then. Sounds like you got it all figured out. I'm about to put some out this weekend. I'm trying to get them all the way through though, and actually use them as mothers until summer. Maybe I should keep an incandescent on 'em until middle of may?

If they do go into veg you can always cover them like gaius was sayin. Might be too late by the time you notice though. But if you did it last year, then I guess it should work this year, eh!

I'll be watchin anyways, if nothing else, to learn how to keep them in veg by doing the opposite of whatever you do to keep them in flower:)

Heh, I dunno if I've got it all figured out, but I like my chances. If nothing else it'll be a fun experiment--and it's helped me with some space issues. Hopefully the timing will work out for me.

Scrappy420 said he's had some plants out for a few weeks as well, but he's vegging his. He keeps a strong spotlight on 'em all night and they're now more than five feet tall! :yoinks: So yeah man, maybe it's a solution for you, too.

Things are moving right along in the back yard. Of my three Bogglegums, I've positively IDed one as male and two as female. At first I thought I'd toss the guy, but then I decided to put a chemdawg D clone I have to work in a breeding project. What would happen if I crossed this lanky sativa (about ten inches tall here)....

032507chemd.jpg

...with this stout, wide-leafed indica?

031907boghealthy.jpg

We'll find out some months down the line, assuming I get some viable pollen from the Bogglegum. I want to flower out the Chem D, dust it with BOG genes, and see what I get in the way of seeds. Could be damned interesting! I need to do it for the naming possibilities alone. So far it's a tie between BoggleDawg and ChemBog. I just hope I'm able to preserve the Bog pollen, because that'll be ready way before the Chem D shows any flowers.

In other news, my Strawberry Coughs are beginning to form immature buds. Some plants are a bit farther along than others and they don't all show the same growth characteristics. The latter point makes me glad I didn't put them in my flowering room. This outdoors thing is the perfect project for them. Here's a little early flower development on one:

032507scbudding.jpg

The one that I thought had an iron deficiency is showing healthy new growth after just one watering with coco-specific ferts:

032507scbetter.jpg

Unfortunately, another SC was damaged either by me or possibly an insect yesterday. I found the stem broken a few inches from the top--not just broken but also looking brownish and unhealthy. I staked it up and gave it a good feeding; we'll see if it recovers. If not, I'll have to remove the top of the plant.

032507scdamage.jpg

Decided to grow some actual strawberries in coco just for the heck of it:

032507actualstrawberries.jpg

Here's the garden in its entirety. See the white things in the pots? I had a bunch of leftover panda plastic, so I cut out several discs, cut slits/holes in the middles, and fit them around each stem so as to prevent evaporation. I'm hoping that this will save water, maintenance time, and nutes.

You did it.:) :pointlaug

Watch for mold/fungus under the poly. I tried that once indoors with plastic disposable plates, and it made the top of the soil all moldy.

Al right, you talked me into it. I suppose if you are going to twist my arm, I'll have to grow out 50 or so of those Bog's x ChemDawg seeds to find me....I mean you... a good clone mum:wink:

Cracking me up, 20. :biglaugh: Seriously, I'll be stoked if this breeding project gives me a few interesting seeds. If it works out I'd be happy to do some kind of trade dealio.

Good point about the possibility of mold. I'll keep an eye peeled for that.

I've got my own breeding proj going on...well, I will...if I can find the other 1/2 to my purple urkle pollen. I'm trying to find a monster yielder. I've got some Critical Mass, Chronic, and hopefully a Heavy Duty Fruity coming. Hopefully one of those will be worthy.

Time for a little update, methinks. The Strawberry Coughs have been outside for 21 days now and are budding up a little more every day:

scflowering1.jpg

scflowering2.jpg

They're looking super healthy, even the one with the (still) damaged stalk. They've stretched considerably--have probably tripled in size since I put 'em out--so I'm glad I didn't put 'em in my flowering room.

040107.jpg

I separated the male Bogglegum from the others because his flowers are maturing. Here's "Stud" as of this morning:

BOGstud.jpg

Strangely (to me, anyway) the female BOGs are flowering V-E-R-Y S-L-O-W-L-Y. Bogglegum is supposed to be ripe in less than 50 days, so I would have expected them to be a little further along than a little pistil here and there...but that's what I'm getting thus far. It surprises me that the Strawberry Coughs are this much farther ahead than the BOGs, especially since they only have a few days lead time in flowering. I'd have expected the opposite.

Anyway, I took ten clones from the BOGs and ten days later got healthy roots on all of 'em! Second time running that I've gotten 100% of my clones to root. It's a big deal because I used to suck at cloning...not anymore.

rootedBOG.jpg

It'll be interesting to see whether the plants grown from clone behave differently from the seed-grown mothers. I say this because all the plants I've grown in coco from seed have grown insanely huge leaves, while the clones have behaved as expected.

Thanks for the link to the thread, dude. I get lost trying to find my car keys!

Jeeze, nice grow! Plants look fanfuckintastic. Where'd ya get the light and how much was it, lmfao. Seriously, I'm so used to looking in the closet and admiring how nice it is to have 1K of HPS, makes me feel like shit to see what the sun does for them.

Keep up the good work, bro and thanks for slummin and stopping by my pos thread.

Peace bro

P.S. I'll give ya some rep right here in public, dude cause I've maxed out on the double secret rep for a while. Gotta spread it around a little according to the ICM software gods, hehe.
