Michigan as of last week ruled selling to and from dispensary's is illegal so Michigan is screwed and Montana got screwed in early july by court rulings. From someone who has watched the denver scene unfold it is quite pathetic to see what happened in this little cowtown(no chicago or la). It is pretty much basic economics of supply and demand. I have been in at least 100 dispensary's and took thirty to forty to find my first jar of fire. for the everyday pothead colorado is a paradise ounces starting to dip to 200 and below for fire. Lots of pot snobs that turn there nose to high quality strains if they don't have a fancy name stuff that people would of gone out of there way to buy on the black market years back, the dispensary shoppers totally got spoiled, but for a while many didn't know what quality was and now they are starting to learn. Lets talk about the black market, totally wiped out by most accounts someone knows a card holder that can run down and grab a quarter for them. there is and was some world class growers residing right here in our midst, for a while you could really score some really good genetics, but they were mostly infested with pm and mites and then the root aphid epidemic, thanks cali for bringin in all your crap with you appreciate it! the ulgly side of it millions on the line and a mite infestation three weeks out, break out the floramite, you wouldn't believe the shit that was being sprayed on crops in deep flower it would make your head spin. pm and mite infested crap all over the place. the black market guys now pretty much losing there jobs or hauling it out of state, safe to say no black market here right now and maybe never again, who knows? It got to where cali is market wise alot faster becuz much smaller area, people act offended to pay more than 2600 for tits to the wall diesel and kush's that are perfectly grown. I am a medical card holder and am totally disgusted with this medical scene and what it has done to the scene in colorado.
The new system is designed to eliminate all but the richest just like the rest of the free enterprise system, the small guy is out of business.
If your looking for a beautiful state with a great quality of life with a great year round climate and 35 dollar eights of some of the best grown pot in the world then pack your bags, but you will be dissillusioned if you think you can thrive here in the pot business.

really interesting, thank for sharing. I would be pissed having to goto that many places to find decent herb!

I've read that the law has made it that the dispensaries have to produce their own stock and can't buy from caregivers. No surprise that they are trying to maximize profit and minimize costs. I've also read that they are pulling everything out of flower after only 7 weeks whether it's ready or not. I imagine the market is full of schwag, and it is hard to find Connoisseur Herb.

Like many other things in life - if you want it done right, do it yourself.

There are lots of really good growers in this state but most don't work for a dispensary.

yup thats how most markets are working they dont care about end product its all about maximizing profit....if people who dont know better love to buy 7 week herb with no complaints they will pick at 7 weeks.....you can let the buds run another week or two but it wont translate into better return you might only get a few hundred dollars extra wholesale which isnt worth the extra electricity or time......

i usually pride myself on picking at 8 week minimum but i just picked my first batch at 7 weeks because im in a crunch....the weeds still pretty damn good and will still fetch a reasonable price...and im a smalltime grower when you run 100 lights and the dispensary shelves are bare and you need product asap you really have no choice, cant hang a sign on the door that says "2 weeks from harvest" you gotta pump something out asap!

and most guys who are letting their strains run 8-9 weeks arent idiots who gonna grow an extra week and dump it for lowball prices like 26 at the local clubs.....if they are smart enough to ripen past 8 weeks they are smart enough to find buyers in places where it will fetch 35 a pop easy...

if i was a club owner in CO i would be running a bunch of bog strains and other early finishers.....

Wow, old thread but here is whats up in CO right now

You have a lot of dipshits that have money from other places that "wanna be dope growers" for whatever reason so they open a dispensary. NOBODY that knows anything buys shit for any dispensary in this state. You are smoking shit you DONT WANT TO BE! Now the owners are losing A SHIT TON of money and firing the growers they signed up with to save some cash and hiring $12 an hour workers to grow the product. Growing dope and stocking shelves at walmart are 2 different things but these jackasses dont realize that. They look at cali and say "wow, i can afford a 100 lighter grow, ill make all kinds of money". Problem is this aint cali, you have tons of fuckers rocking shit they can grow but cant sell because of the population difference and its newbie shit weed. You have a 100 lighter?? Great, its all shit commercial and if ya wanna move it ya gotta send it east and thats WHY THE DEA IS IN TOWN! Everyone in this state knows shit is flowing east. Sure the caregivers and smaller growers are still doing great cause these ex club/real estate jackasses grow shit weed but its bring heat on "us" cause the feds know these dipshits are sending shit east and assume the caregivers are doing the same.

Its fucking nuts out here, SHIT WEED EVERYWHERE. I MEAN SHIT WEED FUCKING EVERY WHERE...but in florida it would be $300 an oz or $4k a lb but out here you cant even sell it fucking local. Nobody is buying this bullshit out of the big grows, its all SHIT FUCKING WEED.

why so bitter?

lol... don't know if it's bitter or not, just that when the market fails to recognize your efforts in growing an unadulterated, pristine product... and the crap ass commercial croppers make out... you kinda end up feeling that they (everyone else) deserve shit poison to smoke, or you should just do it like the rest of the fucks out there... and make the almighty dollar out to be the high priest that it is.

not bitter, just the nature of the beast. we need to examine the underlying value systems of our society... like this for any product and/or service in our economy... even education. it's all part of the life sell out.

well...from my experience as a multiple shop owner / manager as well as a long time grower and vendor - what is quality in the eyes of the grower, isnt always the same in the eyes of the buyer. ive had people bringing in 110+ day strains that were amazing sativas, that patients wouldnt even look 2x at, while the 55 day bubba kush hybrid was bought up so quick we wouldnt even bother to bother to put it in jars because we got so tired of refilling it every 20 minutes....

and believe me i do understand how hard it is when you put all your time energy and rely on a harvest to pay the bills. ive had vendors scream at me, threaten me, call me every foul name in the book for turning away their wares. because it is extremly hard when you do the work and dont see the reward due to one or several reasons rather it be on a growers fault or the market. you have to really know what people are looking for and work to fill that void as best as possible. thats what i had to tell to alot of these people who thought they could quit their day jobs and become suppliers after running a few successful small harvests. dont put all your eggs in one basket, specially if you know that there are people who are setting up 20-50k sqft grows.

its a real sink or swim business and alot of people get mesmerized by what they think is huge profit for little work... having been in this industry for some 10+ years I can tell you that its not all gumdrops and lollipops. theres alot of behind the scenes work and risks that most people dont seem to realize or account for. you really have to know what your doing and be in it for all the right reasons. ive been doing this for a decade and im not a millionare or some mega rich tycoon, but ive helped alot of people, ive always put my heart into it, and we have always been a staple of respect, quality and integrity in every community we have entered.

Shit bro... I pretty much agree with you all the way across the board. In fact, the very first point you make is what blows my mind on a regular basis... what the buying customer is actually requesting... gimme the kushy nugs, or the purps... which is practically every time i see it... compressed, shipped commercial beasters... but it da dank in some peeps eyes... and if it makes you hack cough a lung out... even better, then it's just the chron... fuck if i know what's going on...??? really it blows the mind.

Personally, just don't think they have ever been exposed to real quality, real conni grade head stash. And without that experience base... they have nothing to really make the contrast with... except that it's way better lookin than mexi brick... and so i guess the beasters are the dank if that's the case. A lack of better options.

Most of the uber dank that gets pimped to the shops, doesn't get to the jars... from what i've seen... just not enough of the conni grade head stash to go around... and that's with the same dank cut only strain, just failed to finish up as conni grade head. There is a real lack of it... and shop owners/employees/friends/partners would eat it up before there was ever enough to get to the floor.

And the last point is part of the problem... all those peeps in the biz... trying to grow hundred dollar bills... all the bling bling, easy as growing a tree... those that fail to appreciate what it requires to grow heady weed... they are the ones running the biz, making the decisions, rollin with the politicians... the business minded people, not the heady minded people. Doing it right & to keep doing it right... ain't fukn easy.

I have no point bro... just ramblin on a buzz. But mad props for fighting the good fight... the biz is in it's infancy... not static... things have tons of room to improve, and will.

Oh believe me I know how you feel I used to have alot of shop owners angry with me because I was offering much higher quality genetics at their price or lower - and when it first started in co I remember nor cal growers coming to me with dufflebags of 50-100 lbs trying to get 4500 a pie and than after talking with them they'd offer me a 20 pack for 35k..... Hahhaha this industry is alot of the same but it never gets tired dealing with some of the people in it... Human nature is a funny thing let me tell ya.....

So, what are people looking for in Co? Is it just people have heard some popular strains, and that's all they ask for? Is it just that people haven't tried longer running sativas and don't how the 'high's' differ? Do growers of those more exotic strains need to build a following for their gear? I know it's a bunch of questions, and am just curious about how market demand works in this field.

sorry roll... i'm a pot snob... have given back free weed before, on several occasions even... lol

i really believe it has to do with experience... and options. if you can smoke a whole bunch of weeds, over a lot of time, you'll begin to pick out the nuances of each strain... and even the differences in how a same strain was grown differently. it's like wine, or cigars, or anything... the more you get into it, the more you experience, the more the subtleties stand out. and after a while, you just can't tolerate anything less than whatever it is one has experienced to really work with their own body... and mind.

having spent time in CO... and getting a lot of shit done through FSL... you can even begin to identify it to cannabinoid profiles, as they correspond to whatever effect you might experience.

after a while, where a box of wine was previously good enough... you begin to appreciate the 300 dollar bottle. as the market matures, so will the consumers... and it has a lot to do with access & options.

The general dispensary buying crowd will go for anything that smells good looks good(has red hairs on it and has a fancy name. Well in my experience some of the most potent pot is not the greatest to look at and you can bring red hair out on any old schag by phospourous frying it, the last I checked potency and red hairs has no correlation also they are fools for anything purple well purple pot often times is pretty and tasty but in my experince never brings much potency. I compare the pot market in colorado to the music scene you have a million bands some good and some bad that are playing for intoxicated people in general for pretty small per gig amounts, I have scene screamin lead guitar players never miss a note all night and it wouldn't of mattered if he did cuz the drunk audience would never have noticed and if they did notice it wouldn't matter to them cuz they wouldn't remember it the next day. When the greenrush first hit alot of people wouldn't of known the difference b etween the most dank og cut or a eight of scwag.
Another thing about the scene that pisses me off is the strain liers grow out a bunch of seed and name each different pheno type some exotic popular name and throwin it in a jar.
Then the ultimate insult to injury is leaving the shake on the bottome of high end jars and selling it for 60 an eight, please guys move your shake jars to the econmy shelf at the end of each week. last but not least using sex to sell your product, please leave the nineteen year old budtenders with the hot body's and blank stares at home or at wendys. to do what they do well. For all the shop owners that are still getting along with subpar weed and bs they probably won't for long the cream has a way of rising to the top, I will save my business for a guy like the lemon man at verde on colfax he only has ten jars but they are all from elite cuts and perfectly grown and he really cares about what he is doing he understands customer service and loves what he does.

Sorry i blew upl

hahah i rememeber patients coming in and telling us they saw our weed at another dispensary for 80/8th. We came to find out people we thought were patients were shop owners or other shop employees coming and picking up ounces of our top shelf so they could have quality at their store!!! hahahaha

It is funny though, I'm in the south and the immediate response to what I produce is, "You got this from Cali huh?"

Uhm... I'm in a major metro in the south... and saying weed is from cali = basically calling it mid-grade...

So, hypothetically if I moved to CO. I would just need to grow fast flowering bud with a lot of red hairs (Red Haired Skunk comes to mind) or purple in color to be successful.
