It might sound crazy but after almost 55 years of growing I never taken a plant into the amber stage. My plants are well developed but I don't see any amber. How long does it take for them to amber and do they vary according to strain. I'm growing hybrids.
Any thoughts on the amber process would be welcome.
The trichomes do pretty much get amber when they ripen up…and yes they all mature according to strain…I use an eye loupe to check in in on them…for me I like to see all of the sparkly trichs gone…and the rest should be milky…once the amber starts developing keep an eye on them because they turn quickly…I usually want only a few amber trichs on my plants when I harvest them…at least that’s the plan anyway…kinda like any fruit when ripening you let them go too far past their peak and the quality deteriorates

One person suggested I should not let them go beyond 25% amber, does this go along with your experience.

Yes, I have a jewelers loupe and also a small handheld magnifier that lights up and is adjustable. So I'm ready for detection, I just need to understand what I'm looking for. I usually harvest when they are mostly opaque with a few clear glands. I think that comes from the early days of growing outdoors and what I learned.

These days because of age and several chronic health problems I' m looking for more of a relaxing physical reaction opposed to lets get up and run around the block. No, I don't run at all. I can't
If I want a sativa dominant hybrid I look for mental stimulation with a relaxing physical aspect to it. Like the Jamaican Dream I've been using. I don't usually use cannabis during the day, sometimes on a weekend afternoon.

Picking early tends to lead to zippy weed imho. As drumskinz mentioned above, get a cheap jeweler's loupe ($10-15 on Amazon) and watch the trichomes. When you start seeing a few amber, prepare to harvest in 2 or 3 days. Most strains seem to need 10 - 12 weeks rather than the 8 we all would like.

I've pretty much have always been an early harvester as that's what I learnt form outdoor growing back in the late 60s early 70s. Harvest before amber, that's what I learnt and people who tried my smoke were not disappointed. There was not the selection of strains as you see today with all their different characteristics.
I think my needs these days are about my physical and mental well being, with several chronic diseases my body has aches and pains. Anything I can do to minimize my aches and pains is a good thing.
If cannabis with more amber provides more physical relief I'd like to find out.

Yeah, I have a loupe and a handheld adjustable magnifier with a light. I just need to figure out what I'm suppose to be looking for.
I know cannabis degrades at a certain point and I don't want to ruin all my work by over maturing the flowers.
I also heard a couple of times today, amber still continues with harvested buds.

Case in point just prior to lights out I checked in on the Blueberry Muffin…still no amber trichs…in fact I still see some clear 🤷‍♂️

Morning Folks!

I like all music as well. Except for Phil Collins, Rush, mumble rap, auto tune and some asshole Kieth Sweat I just learned I hate lol. Other than those few things I listen to all from Cab Calloway to Slayer.

Going to be 68 today which will be nice to get some outdoor work done. Porch heated up enough for seed starts. The Dog knows this as he elected to wait on the hike this morning as it is 33 out currently.

^^^^ You hate Rush AND Phil Collins,,,who hurt you Lester...who hurt you... 😀

Another rainy day here in the Great Lakes State.

Our Detroit Tigers are off to a great start 0-3, gonna be another long year.

Every now and then when I talk to dad I like to remind him about when he was young he turned down a job with Boeing in Seattle because the weather was "always bad" yet he decided it was much better in MIchigan...

Morning all
