SSH in coco

J

So here it is my first grow in coco. Having some problems as you can see. I am currently giving them 5ml A 5ml B and 5ml Rhizotonic all canna products (10 ml of each in 2 gal of water). I water once a day giving them 1 quart of water apiece to ensure adequate run off. Every third day I flush. they are in 1 gal containers but will be moved to 5 gal containers right after the switch. There is some bleachng/yellowing and leaf curl. What do you guys think is the culprit? Well I guess all there is left to say is enjoy the boat show.

honestly i think it's pretty pointless to flush that often. i only flush my veg plants once, after about a month and a half of veg time. then one more time late in flowering.

how's the drainage of your coco? maybe it's just too soggy in the root zone?

and how big do you plan on growing them before flower? cause 5 gallons might be overkill.

These pictures are from week three. It drains pretty well the top is dry by the end of the day. I was wondering if it could be light stress. They dont seem to be getting too hot and it is pretty well ventilated in there. I just dont know how close I can get it without damage. Its a 600w w/vented hood that is about 12" away.

That lil' baby doesn't need all that light for right now. Give her a compacted flourescent or two.
Or just raise your hood. Lol.

Rhizotonic is just costing you money at this point, and might be hurting you. And you are flushing too much, once a week at the very most, some people don't at all until the end. You might be need a little cal/mag if your water doesn't have enough.

Which strains are these? they have sativa looks, so I'd keep nutes on the low side... do you have an EC meter? know your tap water EC? Do you check PH? coco brand?

Looks like overnuting -> locking...

I'm with Tony Danza, I won't give rhizotonic on a regular basis, just once when seedlings at week 2 or so, and when transplanting.

Rhizotonic uptake is enhanced with low EC dosages, when I use it I don't use nutes; I use it but on a wayy lower dosage, 1ml/L (recommended dosage is 4ml/L) and water just with it that day.

You need to know your water EC, you may be over/underfeeding them without knowing...

I was taught, and firmly believe, that instead of flushing often, you'd better nuting them with lower dosages, and flushing sparingly, i.e. don't create the need for flushing. Plants adapt pretty well to environment, but lose time doing it, so the most stable its environment is, the happier and healthy they are.

These are Super Silver Haze week 3 veg with a bag seed I am calling mongrel. All I know about mongrel is for some popcorn it got me blasted. I dont have an ec meter but I ph my feed to 5.9. My coco brand is canna as are all my nutes. I have decided to stop giving rhizo at this point and raised my light to 18". I misspoke earlier when I said I flush every 3 days. I meant I feed with plain tap water every third day. Cant remember taps ph but I now plan on getting an ec meter. How much do you guys water when in a 1gal pot. 3 cups give me some runoff but 4 is somewhere between 20%. Again thanks for the help everyone.

jws0007 an EC meter is a very good investment! That way You'll know how your tap water is, which is essential to determine if yours is a deficiency or a nute lockout. Then you can decide if it needs Cal/mag or not.

Have your PH meter calibrated... I was having all sort of problems due to a misbehaving PH meter.

Re: watering, I had some problems at first, it may sound dumb, but I watered them as they were growing in soil.

Coco meisters taught me coco is coco, don't treat it as soil. There's no way to drown them, plus it's an hidroponic medium, you need to be sure water (and nutes) flow throughout the pot uniformly, so:

1.- Water often. Some do once a day. Spacing waterings can be useful to promote root growth however as they send tap roots in search of water.

2.- Be sure you water enough: Rule of thumb: water with at least with 1/2 pot capacity minimum! remember: runoff won't "leach" nutes as in soil, on the contrary, it will distribute nutes more evenly, and there's no way you can drown roots, in fact you're bringing more Oxygen into the coco.

3.- Coco nutes have all the plants need, but maybe some PK for the flowering stage.

Unless your tap water is almost RO or distilled, and you're using a good coco medium, in coco a nute def in seedling stage is usually caused by lockout.

Knowing you maybe used too much nutes, I'd do a thorough flush with just PH'ed water with at least 3 times the pot volume and would watch the seedlings evolution with patience, waiting to feed with nutes again until the coco is starting to dry.

Your EC meter will also help you to know the "richness" of the watering you're giving them once you add coco A+B nutes and PH- to your water, in seedling stage there's no need to be higher than 1. If using the minimum dosage goes higher than 1, you're adding too much PH-, you'll have to mix your tap water with distilled/RO water to lower your tap water EC.

Here they are in week 4. Cut out the Rhizo and will begin to water by "feel". Raised the light a little as well. I was thinking about toping these to control their height.

Rhizo causes gnarley PH rise! Test and see for yourself. Your plants curl on both sides looks like a lock related to high ph. So even though you are saturateing the shit out of them, they end up....duhn duh duuuhhhh dehydrating... :nono:

They look vastly improved. :joint: sighhhhh

when you flush, your using ph adjusted water...right?
canna will buffer your ph, but w/o nutes (flush??) where is your ph at?

Pot hates radical PH dynamic.

Im going to spend some time this week and get all my numbers exact and lay it all out for everyone.

whoa, they look nice! sometimes do nothing, just having patience and wait is the best one can do.

I don't see them that lanky, I'm not experienced with SSH, but depending on the strain topping may harm yield. when are you going to flip them to flower?

repuk-- I'm not sure that I understand what kind of growth pattern a plant might exhibit where topping would harm yield. Do you care to share more information on this subject?

I meant for certain plants growing the typical central big fat bat-like cola, topping may produce two colas, but not all strains get a benefit i.e. those two colas yield doesn't equal a single one, or may weight the same but takes longer to be ready. or may simply yield less.

There are other strains however that benefit from this and need it in fact to achieve expected yields, blueberry comes to mind.

I read this while lurking on several seed banks info about their strains; while some encouraged topping, most notably for blueberry, some advised against topping for others, Simon from Serious Seeds warns so about Chronic for example.

Well since this is my first time I will not top. But I was thinking more for height control. Im a little afraid that the could get out of control.
