hi mad, and all

ive been trying the Phytoseiulus persimilis predators, and keeping the humidity high for them - i'll keep you posted on how it works.

hey you guys, seems like everyone I know is getting infested with mites. I am a first time grower doing organics. I just put my plants in last night. I completely sanitized the room before they went in, but after hearing all these horror stories, I guess Ive become a little paranoid. Does anyone have any tips on how to prevent infestations. Should I get some neem oil and give them treatments on a regular basis? Is there any other ways to prevent this? and what exactly promotes mites to invest, is there something that can make your room more susceptible to mites, or is it just natural for them to come in? thanks for the feed back!

a trap plant (spider mites like bean leaves) with Azatrol or other insecticide should keep them off your ladies.

VerdantGreen, I hear they work great, same with lady bugs. I've wanted to pick some up since my (non-pot) indoor plants got plagued with spider mites, i first noticed it when I saw the spider webs between the leaves of my morning glory, fuck was I pissed when I saw them. Moved all the plants to one location, quarantined them and neem'd the shit out of them with double the recommended dose, every day, for two weeks. My morning glory plants got it worst out of all the other plants, a bunch of their untouched leaves started to rot/droop/crisp and fall off. They're still quarantined. All from a couple pots I brought indoors 6 months ago, eggs just hatched I guess when I added nice moist soil to one of them. Shits rough.

On the safe side, I always recommend that other growers I know set off a 'bomb' in their garden after every harvest to help eliminate any potential problems like powdery mildew (shits the worst).

hate it that it's not totally preventable, but that's what preventative maintenance is for. haha!

it turns out the predator mites stop breeding and hibernate in less than 14 hours of light so are basically useless for a flowering cab/room. not commonly known or told to you by those that sell them, but true.

back to neem, neem before you even see mites is the best way to never see them imo.
i also have a starch based natural spray which is sposed to suffocate them.

p.s. using an electric whisk/blender/smoothie maker to emulsify it works great, i still use some soap though as a wetting agent for the leaves.

Hey VG where did you hear about the blender thing? I got that from Maryjohn ;)

I have to disagree about using neem preventive, or even whipping out the neem at all before using soap and water. My dad set me straight on that one. The high humidity you are keeping is the best prevention, and misting helps as well. So does lower temps.

So if anything I would say use a water or soap and water prevention, and the next less rational step would be to neem it at the last possible opportunity before flowering is too far along.

Neem oil is very common now. Given the absolute laws of Nature, we know that resistance will develop eventually. Diversify your controls and use IPM.

yes mad, i got the blender idea from MJ and it works great!

as for preventative, imo, neem works best long term because it stops the critters breeding. i never saw mites till i became complacent and stopped using neem every couple of weeks when i saw no mites.

agreed about IPM, thats why i have a starch spray as well now which works on contact.

problem is, with my dense canopies and perpetual grow, its pretty impossible to get to all the leaves so i really need to be sure that my plants are clear of mites before they go to flower. lesson learned.

Ok so I got the mites

Spotted them around day 18-20 of flower
the infection was not that bad and only on 1 plant of a total 2

I went and bought plagron neem oil , it is cold pressed therefore much better

Sprayed teh first day twice everywhere I could , the next day twice both times lights were on and again once when lights were off

I also watered same day as first spray with the plagron neem oil solution

7 days have passed from the watering and first spraying and they have not spreaded at all, in fact I have removed all the most infected leaves and am looking hard for any sign of them and there are none , I have for now won.

Also I have sprayed yesterday again when the lights were off. So far I am VERY satisfied with this , I can just thank god to making this neem tree as I had bad luck in getting these bugs, as it is the first time ever i got them.

BUY PLAGRON NEEM OIL, it is the shit , I tell you.

So far NO SIGN of them , NO SPREADING , and no effect on plants.

If I fail and they get out of control I will be updating here. I am quite happy, what can I say, I was sure my crop is lost.

my .02 c

also I have massively failed in preventive. If only I knew before about neem oil preventive use...

My pappy taught me something really special as well!

"Son, I've got something to tell you before you head out on your own!'

'What's that Pa?'

'You need to know the difference between this:

and this':

borg ahaha, thrip is what you need to worry about
Thrips are nasty little bastards! They hide when they see you looking for them ...they actually jump behind the stem and sit still.
I ended that bad trip with neem.....
Recently received some gifted cuts with mites......neem. All gone!

Now Root aphids...these seem to be tough guys.

Any suggestions for a product that works?

Hopefully it won't involve using an Osterizer or a Hamilton Beach.

Hopefully.

Stand by!

I have a buddy who's going insane due to Root aphids...They really messed up a nice thing. I have seen a few buzzing around and I'm starting to get nervous myself. I had them last fall, but I got rid of them by bagging the old soil-mix for about 4 months. I did not put them in the sun,but it sounds like a good idea that VG turned me onto a while back.

would have though Diatomaceous Earth would be worth a try.
I think he tried this....at what application method I just don't know.
I'm going to grab some soon anyway...I'll find my culprit plant and apply some to the surface and dust the holes in the pots.

yeah i think it would need mixing with the soil to be really effective, you may be able to take the pot off and dust the visible roots for now??
