Snakes?

Protective clothing is where it's at for mosquitoes. It always amazed me to see people slathering chemicals all over their arms at the end of the day, then ten minutes later they're putting on a long sleeved shirt because the sun was going down. Dense weave uncoated nylon is the stuff. Running wind pants and windbreaker jacket. Material breathes but the skeeters can't poke their biters through the stuff. Get a cotton hat and put your bug repellent on the rim of the hat instead of your skin. If they're really bad wear the head net. You can open the armpit seams in a windbreaker and sew in a patch of mesh for ventilation.

funny thread. i too really like snakes. i once had a baby water mocassin (under 2') come into my grow. he climbed a weed and perched. he just stayed there watching me. my vibe i got off him was that he was amused. his eyes twinkled and he seemed cool.

i almost got bit by a copperhead. he just waited on me. lucky i saw him.

we don't have a lot of snakes where i'm at. few miles south is big time snake country.

i've seen on tv the big aggressive snakes (some very poisonous) in australia, india, africa, asia. i don't think i would like snakes so much if i was growing there. :)

That's the danger with Copperheads. Other snakes will usually slither away, Copperheads stand their ground. THEY should be on the Don't Tread on Me flag. Them motherfuckers don't move for shit and they're meaner than an English nanny.

2 years ago a water snake lived in the middle of one of my 7 feet tall plant around 3 feet high, he hunt for mice around the plants. so he/her was beneficial, someone stole the plants in early oct. so the snake could do a better job if he save the plants from not just mices.

lol damn man u go in all masked up and all huh? thats hardcore love it!!! i dont even do that but that is what i should use to keep those fkn misquitos off me..they will each ur ass alive here..it sucks when u gotta go check ur plants right after a big wind storm just to make sure everthing is ok..come back out looking like a zombie with whelps all over ur face, neck and arms..hell these little bastards even hit u on the fingers here lol i guess they see a meal in us since they are not alot of things as big and delicious looking to them

lol yeah I do it for a few dif reasons.. to hide my identity at all times in case land owners/leo set up any game cameras after finding any of my patches, and for mosquitos and ticks. Ticks will jump right into your hair our here, it's no fun waking up with a few on your scalp that's for sure...

As far as snakes go I often find them underneath any tarps I have stashed out in the woods/swamp, they love making home under there for some reason. They always give me a jump after uncovering supplies, I think I'm slowly getting used to the son of a bitches though...

2 things worth mentioning...

1.Mornings, IMO the most dangerous time, in non tropical places anyway. Snakes are cold blooded, they seem to like warming themselves in the sun, before setting off hunting. At this point they haven't warmed up to snakey operating temperature, so they are more inclined to stay put and hope you miss them than in the middle of the day or afternoon.

2. Hidey holes, snakes are always looking for new hiding places, take care with your kit as another poster said, and where you put your hands.

Snakes will do almost anything to get out of our way, a bit of knowledge about their habits amd habitat and care goes a long way.

When I was a kid in South Dakota we were always playing with rattlesnakes. I got thrown out of the house one time by mom because I brought a rattlesnake home in a bucket. You just need to be careful and aware of what is going on. Thinking back it is a wonder no one ever got bit.

Well said Chaos,

It's funny how relaxed some people are around predators that most of us are afraid of. After a few years of venturing out in the wilderness with my buddies, I realized the more a person knew about an animal, the less intimidated they were when around it. I used to be terrified of snakes and getting bit while being so remote, but then like you said - a bit of knowledge really calms the nerves as you realize their habits and hiding places. The more I came into contact with them over time, the less I would panic when doing so. Never have been bit, but have came close to stepping on a few that would sun themselves on the train tracks around here... I would hear them moving underneath the boards too. It was kinda creepy lol

Next step for me personally is to get comfortable while in bear country... not sure if that will ever happen though
