If I freak out at the sight of a harmless garter snake, I'd hate to see how I would react to something like a rattler or cottonmouth jeeez

I like snakes myself. around here, it is like snakes or stay on the blacktop. we are eat up with copperheads & timber rattlers around here. if you really are afraid of venomous snakes, catch a couple of big black snakes & try to settle them in where you grow. them big fuckers eat copperheads & all but the biggest rattlers. keep mice & shit away from your plants too. I have caught them around here nearly 7' long, big around as my arm...:)

I was also tripping my balls off at the time...

But I have come pretty darn close to a copperhead before and I ran like hell.

HorseMouth: I wouldn't be too concerned with the second snake, from the shape of its head it doesn't look venomous (not very broad to fit venom sacks) but that first one... that motherfucker looks mean and dangerous.

The second one looks to be a rattler too. A nice one.

Around here, the only poisonous snakes are rattlers. They're actually pretty shy & will generally scoot out of the way if you let 'em. They're not generally found in the high country, above 8000 ft, except where the terrain rises abruptly like Grand Mesa. They're most dangerous when they're cold because their awareness is low or when ready to shed their skin because of clouded eyesight.

Like Black snakes & King snakes, Bull snakes will eat rattlers & are highly prized by knowledgeable country folk. If they find one, they'll take it home & turn it loose, hope it sticks around. Well, unless they keep chickens because bull snakes love eggs, too.

the tiger snakes would come into our shack garage looking for water and always had a lookout for them laying on the other side of fly screen door in summer.had to put the door up in the outer alcove to stop the bastards from coming inside, used to lay a sheet of roofing iron on the ground , come back and check with shot gun, jumped in an old rowing boat in the bay and mate ses you see that? I ses what? he ses fuk'n big tiger snake came out from under the seat and slithered over the side lol true. don't taste to bad to munch on.

Moral of the story I guess is to avoid using any netting type material to drape around your planters as camouflage, since it will entangle all sorts of unexpected guests, who will be there when you show up to check your plants.

I hear that, I had a few chipmunks get caught in my bird netting I draped around my young plants as a barrier for deer. I can imagine other critters getting stuck easily in it too... not gonna use that stuff anymore.

I despise snakes though...

I see em a lot down in the swamps I grow in and on the train tracks looking for frogs after rainfall, but so far I haven't seen anything venomous. We only have a few venomous species where I live... so I do keep an eye out and carry a walking stick but have never been bitten or anything like that, that I wade in some deep water in the beginning and end of the season.

A grower's worst situation is getting bit in a remote area, and not being able to get to help in time. Where I go - if I get bit by something like a Copperhead I'd be lucky if I made it back to civilization in time. We have northern rattlers here supposedly as well, but I've never seen any. I just try to make as much noise as I can (for bears as well) and make my presence known. For the most part they don't want anything to do with us and will slither out of our way...

funny thread. i too really like snakes. i once had a baby water mocassin (under 2') come into my grow. he climbed a weed and perched. he just stayed there watching me. my vibe i got off him was that he was amused. his eyes twinkled and he seemed cool.

i almost got bit by a copperhead. he just waited on me. lucky i saw him.

we don't have a lot of snakes where i'm at. few miles south is big time snake country.

i've seen on tv the big aggressive snakes (some very poisonous) in australia, india, africa, asia. i don't think i would like snakes so much if i was growing there. :)

Them snakes just want a little respect. If we weren't bitchin about snakes, we'd be bitchin about the mice and gophers eating our plants.
