Snakes?

Do you guys worry at all about snakes?

The areas I grow in are pretty populated with snakes, both venomous and non. I fucking hate snakes. I've been lucky up to this point (although have come within a foot or two of a copperhead in tall grass once; I've never ran so fast in my life) but this year I'm thinking of upping the ante and buying some snake boots or some snake repellent to spray around my plots.

Do you guys take any precautions?

if you're hiking in the woods in an area with a prominent population of venomous snakes you would be nuts not to wear at least snake chaps.

I love snakes.. I play with every one I find...even the poison ones...king snake here non poison... I am currently looking for rattlers for their skins which I will use for hat bands and such.. a walking stick will save your ass hiking..keep it out front and tapping around like a blind man...my walking stick has alerted me to many hidden friends..i don't like my rocky snake boots..

Yeah I'm gonna find myself a nice walking stick. That and probably some snake chaps and I might just find some sturdy leather boots asa cheaper alternative to snake boots.

Yeah the walking stick is key; I'm definitely going to put it to good use. I try my best not to fuck with snakes, I know the venomous types in my neck of the woods and I know that copperheads in particular tend to stand their ground or even be rather aggressive.

The walking stick is a good safety measure, but I'm also gonna wear boots/snake chaps.

Most snakes can either be avoided or they'll slither off on their own, but if I run into a stubborn or aggressive copperhead I'm just gonna shoot it... I hate to do so, but I'm not gonna risk losing my life or a limb to one of those evil motherfuckers. Gunshots are commonplace in my neck of the woods, nobody would think much of it and, even if someone did, I'd much rather lose one plot than risk a venomous snakebite. Fuck that shit.

Some years back I came up with the idea of draping the sides of my swamp planters with fishing net, and then weaving in vegetation to create a nice camouflage net appearance that made the grow site really blend in for greater stealth.

One day after walking through the marsh along my submerged path made of 2by4 lumber lashed together, I stepped within inches of the mouth of a snake that become entangled in my camo net, but was very much alive, and none too happy.

Needless to say I discovered just how fast I can sprint through muddy water that day, and I never went back to the site until I was sure the snake was dead and disintegrated.

Moral of the story I guess is to avoid using any netting type material to drape around your planters as camouflage, since it will entangle all sorts of unexpected guests, who will be there when you show up to check your plants.

if you shoot it you should save the skin ..it aint hard ..a soak in glycerin and iso alcohol then to the frame and dry .......yeehaw...snake aint that bad eatin either... I have never eaten a copperhead... altho I processed a few skins and my dog ate the rest..IF I KILL ANYTHING I TRY AND UTILIZE AS MUCH OF IT AS POSSIBLE...to do otherwise is disrespectfull

I've had quite a few rattlesnakes in my garden. They like to lay right next to the black smartpots or hang out under the plants in the straw. I've had a fascination with snakes my whole life, I always have to catch them no matter what.

Balls on you man, I am just happy if the snake and I can leave each other alone lol. One of my good friends has a python and every time I go over his house he asks me if I want to hold it and I'm always like "nah, he seems chill but I don't wanna take any chances of me making any quick movements and freaking him out" as far as wild snakes go fuck that shit.

This one time I was tripping on a quarter of shrooms up in the mountains and I almost stepped on a non-venomous black snake and HOLY SHIT did I fucking jump...

But yeah, those black smartpots catch some rays from the sun, I'm not surprised snakes love chillin' up against them.

Holy shit. What do you mean played with cotton mouths?

And tell me your friend has antivenom on hand. No way in hell would I ever keep a venomous snake, let alone a fucking cobra, as a pet.

i don't wear my snake boots matter of fact i only wore em about 6 times...man up and be aware of your environment..it shouldn't be an issue...learn what snakes like and do and it really shouldn't be an issue...i have hiked and roamed all over without any unmanageable situations.. swamps are the worst

snakes are cool. you've got the right attitude there by just wanting to leave them alone. being in nature is about constant attention :)

my experience in the desert is biased because you can usually see where you put your foot. if otherwise, i'm noisy so the snake can hear me. and fuck a walking stick, carry a sword. they often make lousy walking sticks but sometimes it's better than a stick if you want to feel safe.

snakes i meet just like to be left alone like you hope they would. when i was young, i remember jumping over at least a dozen rattlers coming down a canyon one evening. we were moving fast, yep mario. once ran into a snake laying across the trail who obliged me by wriggling off, cordially.

Let that motherfucker bite your foot and you'll wish you'd spent the extra 100.00
I used to have deer and coon dogs back home. I've seen rattlesnakes large enough to knock you off your feet if they hit ya. Biggest one I ever saw up close and personal was just over 11 foot. Seen some huge water moccasins down around Allendale and Hampton that looked like logs. Not a damn thing fun about those things. Just a slithering. sliding pile of pissed off.

Wouldn't want to be bit myself and I realize there are a few deaths from snake bites yearly. Had a 40 lb dog of mine get bit by a copperhead on the neck and although it was the only time the dog whinned, nothing else besides some swelling happened. Vet didn't think anything needed to be done for it. It was a two foot copperhead, kind of younger.

Dogs usually survive a bite. You got to make sure they don't have a collar on or get it off asap if they get bit up around the head or neck. The swelling will kill em due to choking on the collar.
