it totally depends on the compost source. with my homemade compost i can plant in 100% compost, have no compaction, good drainage, good water holding, and no mud.

BUT, try that with the commercial compost from the garden center near me, which im guessing is 90% manure from the smell and sifted to all hell, i would end up with a soppy mud.

Ive not had the luxury to try homemade compost.

I have only tried commercial compost, and I agree its crap.

yeah, nice thread!!
i was just looking for some practical and detailed information about the smart pots; waiting for my first ones to be delivered the next few days.
will be first test run ever with them so it's hopefully gonna be an exciting discovery for me.

I made a little video of a method I have started using when up potting using Smart Pots, enjoy.

Smart pots rule, you can grow out large plants in much smaller containers. I just grew out a 4ft tall Sativa in a 1 gallon pot, and it was not rootbound and very happy in its small pot :)

Ay, Humboltlocal, those bushes look great, man! I'm curious about your technique for making your own smart/air pots. REALLY curious... Take care...

So if I use 3 gallon regular pots, can I switch over to 2 gal smartpots, or should I stick to 3gallon smart pots?

hashit - drop a size would be my advice, but be prepared for needing to water more frequently once the root system gets well established.

hashit, I'm not sure why you would want to go to smaller pots, the diff between 2 and 3gal is only a few cents(unless grow area size is restricted). I've transplanted into bigger sizes and and when removed from the smaller the root mass and grow medium(soil in my case) was pretty tight. If you try to fit it into a smaller one the roots may be stressed(IMO). I've transplanted some by taking them out of the smart pot and others by leaving them in the smart pot with no visible difference in the plants so far. I plan on documenting the root ball sizes to see if there is any difference once the ladies are done. If anyone has done this please post pics, thanks.

Do any of you smart-potters have a good way to wash out the gunk that accumulates on the fabric after using the pots a few times? I have about 30 pots to clean (2 & 3 gallon size) before transplanting some cuts tomorrow and I want to make it as painless as possible--using an old washing machine.

Yes, I've done a search and found only two posts and they only said "wash in a machine on gentle cycle". I vaguely remember reading that adding a bit of the various 'zyme' products (Cannazyme, etc) helped remove the funky residue left by ferts but I only have half a bottle of Hygrozyme handy and damned if I'm using that expensive stuff as a detergent additive.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated...:thank you:

I shook mine out to remove most of the debris and then washed them in the machine on gentle cycle without soap and they came out clean.

Thanks Major--I did as you suggested but added a tad of liquid soap because some of the the gunk (which I think is molasses residue) remained after the 1st cycle. I now have 32 like-new smart pots...

high everyone, been a while since i posted in the thread
so i figured i'd drop some pics in.

first here's a few of some 1 liter Air-Pots and this is my
first run with them so i have no definitive answers as
to improved yields yet other than to say that the plants
look terrific in these pots.

pic 1 is a Pure Kush and pic 2 is a Dirty Harry

and here is a couple shots of a single Happy Brother x Chocolate Chunk, note the roots poking out of the close-up.

also, as much as i like the Air-Pots, my DIY smart pots
are way cheaper and i can make them in any size i want
although i don't think they'd hold up well if made too big.

anyway, just droppin' in to say high y'all, lol.

peace, SOG
