Too technical?
The ballast itself doesn't generate any significant load - the load comes from the lamp.

Too circuitous?
go with the flip box buddy, it wont show a 12/12 sig which I think is what your worrying about.
Better hook a scope up to the line and watch when that lamp comes on line.

Too much work?

Inspired by your and other similar threads I made a little "write up".
It also covers Flip Flops as mentioned & referred to within part of this thread.

Smart Meters - a few common misconceptions cleared up here.

Since nearly 40% of your posts in your vast tenure here are in this thread, you have obviously contributed mightily to the community.
i wont last her very long? LOL i've been on here longer than both or you combined and it took you until the end of P3 to post your link that "answered" the question. thanks for playing, ttyl

A Flip Flop is NOT going to provide you with ANY SECURITY!
Flip Flops switch the load on your ballast to other bulb(s) (commonly used during the 12/12 cycle) causing the ballast not having to re-start. Many think the aforementioned process will avoid a spike (such as previously mentioned) but it will NOT lower your power bill.
The caveat is that the spikes, while not easily attributable to HID lighting (or whatever flavor), are most easily going to be recognized by their repeatability. Spikes of the same magnitude at a highly repeatable interval over several weeks are going to be suspect. Most spikes generated within a house are going to be from a device responding to a relatively random event (thermostat, etc), rather than a reasonably accurate 12 hour period. Unfortunately, this is probably an event that could be easily picked out by an automated search.

Spikes are NOT the main "give away" though - there are just too many of those around in an average household.

I'm playing this same game. I run my 12 during the cheapest hours of the night. I could easily double my bill if I was to use a flip + seems like that in itself would throw a red flag. trying to figure out how to set the adjustable dial a watt to cut to 400w for veg during peak hours then back to 600 or 1000 during the cheaper hours. Even living in a MMJ state these things are always on the edge of my mind. 1:ying:

Ok, once more with gusto.......a flip-flop will enable the ballast to stay on continuously, thus the spike will be marginally diminished. However, the majority of the spike is as a result of the lamp igniting and the resultant peak in current - the ballast, when unattached to a lamp, pulls virtually nothing.

Hope this clearly answers your question.

edit your 1st post with that and we can pretend it didn't take until p5 to get posted

How would that make sense?

You posted your question on 7/22 and I wrote my thread 2 days later on 7/24.

You want me to edit a reply I made to you on 7/23 with a thread I wrote on 7/24???

It's like...going back to the future (or something like that).

for the sake of anyone wondering the same & getting an answer in post #2. seems a lot easier than sifting through 5 pages. just an idea

Yeah it would but instead then you would have been bitching about me replying to you in a thread with another thread I posted after that fact.

But if you would have noticed my reply to you AND admitted you missed it initially we would not have been making this endless back and forth & this thread by now would have disappeared in the depths of ICM's history anyways...which it will because I am going to shut up about it now lol

I just hate this more than anything. If I get snitched on, a fire occurs, they smell it, gypsy rats my ass out to the feds(ha), something else- shit, that's all in the game. When I planted my first seed I knew I could wind up in prison.

But this shit?

As a middle class man I know I'm just a pawn in this fake world. But as a grower in a non-med state it's like I'm a fucking sitting duck with the smart meters. And there is nothing at all I can really do other than cross my fingers that the electric company employee doesn't snitch.

Flip flop or not the bottom line is that it's incredibly obvious to anyone reading my smart meter that I'm a pot grower.

Almost makes me consider a career change. Depressing.

worry about yourself. you got your answer to your smart meter questions.

see rives this is a prime example of having posts and adding nothing of substance. this quality ICmager has been here <1 year and has more posts, but is seemingly worthless. who is worse?
