The tree can take the interference and keep going year after year, but, for an annual, and especially one intended to produce yield, it sounds sketchy to bind it.
Comparing the more standard methods of limitation, this year I found: topping it twice doesn't do much. Still gets taller than me. However, the ones planted in March--by far the oldest--are quite short from having spent some time smashed almost flat under screens. Oldest = shortest due to not being vertical for a while.
