Should I volunteer overseas?

I would like to go to Africa and feed starving children, or go to the Amazon and search for missing people.

Has anyone ever volunteered overseas before?

There's this one organization that will let you volunteer all over the world. Even in places like Netherlands. Why the Netherlands needs American volunteers is beyond me. But they even have positions in Amsterdam. Seems weird that they would need volunteers for yoga and gardening. http://www.ivsp.org/vfpdetails.aspx?campcode=NetVia10.2-07&begin=06/27/2007&end=07/07/2007

Says no drugs allowed but I mean, they cant' watch you every minute.
A lot of places charge you money to volunteer, but at least it includes food and insurance. It's only $250 USD per project (which can last a couple weeks or several months).

You could come to Israel and volunteer on a Kibuttz. Pick oranges or something. This can be a wonderful expierence, and a very comfortable cheap holiday. You will get a room and food and a small amount of pay.
Or the Israeli Army runs a volunteer program called SAREL. This is usually a 2 week program and you get to be in the Israeli Army.

I think its crazy that you have to pay $250 just to register and then get info about where you want to go volunteer. Does not sound very honest.

They have other reputable sites linking to them. Also, the money is refunded if they can't place you. Unfortunately, I don't think it's stipulated, but I think you have to pay your airfare too. I think this is geared to college students.

Appreciate the idea. I don't plan on going to Israel for anything though. They don't need my help and they dont have anything to offer like Amsterdam does.

You could volunteer for Al-Queda. I understand that they need people to be pack mules for large quantities of explosives. Learn to say Allah Akbar and wear earplugs. The pay includes 70 virgins.

Funny you mention that, I originally got the idea about volunteering overseas because of the tragedy in Darfur (which is perpetuated by a party directly supported by Al Qaeda).

Volunteering overseas is some of the most rewarding and culturally mind opening experiences you can live. You will view the world differently once you take that journey. Just make sure it is feeding starving kids and not bogus work that will put you in a dangerous area.

or go to the Amazon and search for missing people.

So what kind of missing people would you search for in the Amazon? Just curious. Pygmies or the feared Amazon warriors?

It seems like all the volunteer opportunities end up costing the person doing the volunteering money. Why would I want to pay $1,000 so I can go to Africa for a month and help rebuild a school? For $1,000 I could probably hire 10 african workers in my place.

RedCross is only looking for volunteers who are doctors and such...
The Peace Corps looks like it has some stuff. Anyone know anyone in the Peace Corps? It'd be really sweet if I could work this so I got to go to Thailand to practice my muay thai while I'm there.

Peace corps will send you somewhere to learn the language for a few weeks, then off to help poor folks somewhere. From what I can remember they give you just enough for gas and that's it. Plan on it lasting less than a year, as survival needs will force you to get a job there as an english teacher or some profession you are skilled at. You can't survive being a volunteer with no real trade skills I believe, that is why other NGOs etc, charge money, so they can feed you etc..

No, It very serious.-
I would hate to get lost in the Amazon Jungle. But at least if I was, I would have Rubberband looking for me so.

Blackwater - Bush Administration mercenaries under the offical title "Defence contractors"...NOT something I’d recommend. These guys don't defend, they attack at the will of the American govt.
These guys are basically another branch of the military without the rules of engagement etc. NOT GOOD.

They also helped disarm people protecting their home from looters in New Orleans.

Being part of this is not something I'd expect from a herb lover.....

I am sure there are hundreds of charities in your own home town that could desperately use your help... Are you just looking for a free ride to someplace?.. as that is what it sounds like. Not trying to offend you... just how your post came across to me
