People that resort to calling names when being challenged are proving they're intellectually disabled. Everyone should read what's posted, make up their own mind and take what you learn to keep yourself and your plants safe.
Biggest mistake....assuming a 5ft plant wouldn't get its bottom 6 inches of outer bark chewed on by stupid muskrats...
Took the cage down(more like tripped over it)....didn't put it back....3-4 days later...my tree is looking stressed as I walk up to it....I look down and a muskrat is chewing on the bark still...

Use treekote, it works like a charm on multiple levels sealing in the stem and making it nasty tasting for animals

It's amazing how useful threads like this can be for someone dedicated to jotting down some pre-season "to-do's" and "to-dont's" in a spare notebook. Learning from others instead of the hard way is what saves us time and money as a grower, so keep em comin folks...

On the moisture crystal issue, I'm noticing you guys seem to be using ALOT of crystals or possibly not spreading them very well (this is from what im reading, I don't know for sure) and soil that literally MOVES causes stress IMHO...
But I always dig my holes in a large "bucket" shape, For say a 10 gallon hole that is proportional in shape to a standard 5 gallon bucket I maybe use 1 cup of crystals for the whole thing, bear in mind I have very nice soil around here, I just want to explain my typical, non hose-fed holes- light is my issue. I use maybe 1/3 of the crystals to cover the bottom of the bucket shaped hole- with a mix of long lasting nutes- veg and flower nutes btw.
After that I put maybe half of the soil back in; which has another 1/3 of the water crystals MIXED into it. I arrange this half of the soil in a "cone" shape, where the middle of the hole is the deepest.
Now that my hole is in the cone shape, I sprinkle the last 1/3 of the crstals evenly over the "cone's" surface, I TRY NOT TO LET TOO MUCH ACCUMULATE IN THE VERY BOTTOM. I also put long lasting VEG nutes on this top layer.
I feel this gives the tap root a nice little "cradle" full of crystals and nutrients-without being too EXPANSIVE, and still giving the roots a little time to grow before hitting the nutrients. And the veg nutes, being most available near the roots and the surface, are absorbed first.. And the multi purpose nutes deeper down will feed the roots once they are mature and probably looking for some food for future root growth. Ive never had a plant die of natural cause in one of these holes... And I only watered if it hadn't rained in two weeks etc.

Make sure your plants are going to get enough southern sun exposure. Go out to the plot and inspect at different times of the day before you plant your plants. This is to make sure the plants are going to get direct sun for most of the day. I've planted plants before not realizing a few huge trees that I thought were far enough away weren't going to block the sun but they did.

planting in a swamp with muskrats.... they killed a lot of my plants and I spent all summer getting even..... they chewed all plants at stalk like a beaver.....I hate them little bastards
did you cage your plants at all? I found that beaver love to chew stalks too... I'll never plant in a swamp again without cages! Bastards

Backpack burn - seems crazy? Have you tried this with other plant material?! Seems to me like if you were already running away from something you heard and you stopped, lit your 75l backpacking backpack full of wet plants, even if soaked with combustible fluid, you would just get more charges for starting a forest fire...

also I second the drunk farming - don't go to your plot all fucked up, and I mean, if you are prone to being a bit paranoid with some buds, don't even smoke up too much. You need to stay sharp when caring for your babies.

I agree, but wildfires are sooo rare in my area. We only have a drought long enough to have conditions capable of a wild fire every ten years or so around here. It's not like in Arizona where cigarettes cause fires near highways. I would rather rip off my shirt along with the bag squirt liquid on it and torch it than be in the possession of the shit. I feel that doing something unusual every step of the way might be enough to keep a verdict from sticking in court. And yeah, if you put lighter fluid on wet vegetation it will still burn to ash in a matter of seconds. But you just IMPROVED MY IDEA THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Carry a literal "burner" bag, something to light and draw attention away while you simply drop the real bag somewhere else

Tsk Tsk Smokey so unimaginative, you can plant by a "water source" it's all in your approach. If you can find wild grass tall enough to hide autos or late season minis why not? Most folks assume that mj all grows in Xmas tree shapes or what not. Not many will look in waist high weeds for a grow. Can't find wild vegetation, you can always buy grass seed form any store and sow a nice spot of land lacking an abundance of cover.
A water source could also be where runoff from the rain runs. Finding a decent spot near a rain channel may even be secure enough to grow full size plants. Or you could use a water break to divert runoff from the channel to your site. Like Julian sez spot dictates method... As well as plant size. But you also must have vision to exploit all the spot's resources to your advantage.
