no epiphany moments walt but certainly has given me some time to think how lucky I was. I've driven trucks for yrs, tire dangers are an industry hazard we deal with daily, all those yrs I never had a mishap & suddenly when my number comes up I walk away nearly unscathed. very lucky. within seconds I was checking my face & scalp for exposed skull, it was that vicious of a blast.

damn, i've driven 24ft box trucks and vans for 10 years now, and have been lucky as hell. never had any issues with the trucks, but many a time i had to fill a cargo vans tire because it was low. we used to load over 5000lbs in the vans, and in the trucks, who knows how many pounds we have been over weight.
i was just a link in the chain, trying to eat, looking back, not the smartest.
i've been very lucky with tires, 2 seperate times the inside sidewall had the wires exposed, and i had been driving them at over 80mph.

best wishes to you. speedy recovery. i used to work in a gas station. whenever we aired up truck tires, we had a device which locked on the valve stem with a 10 ft hose on it. we stood well away. good luck to you.

I just ordered one of these:

when I get it I'll scrap the 12" hose
and replace it with 6' or 8' keeping
me at a safe distance from danger.

I love the net, found the real deal for inflating RV tires including an ultra accurate fluid filled gauge and a 6 foot hose (to stand away from the tire) already in place. priced @ $120 it's a bit spendy but well worth the price of ones health.

there's no way on Gods green earth that I'm ever filling a tire without a filler chuck & gauge setup again.......

decided to check the facts on how lucky I was:

Case 1 involved a 'split rim' mounted tire which I don't have, case 2 was my scenario w/the exception that my tire was mounted on the RV not sitting on a work bench, no real difference as I was also leaning on the wheel as I inflated straight from an air chuck.

The second death involved a tire installed on a one-piece rim. The wheel was situated on a workbench. The worker was leaning on the wheel and inflating the tire using a standard air chuck. The tire exploded throwing the worker onto the floor. Evidence showed that the tire explosion was caused by a deteriorated sidewall. A deteriorated sidewall limits its ability to hold pressure. These types of explosions leave a zipper pattern in the tire sidewall.

Risks:
A 20-inch (50.8 cm) tire inflated to100 psi (689.5 kpa) can contain up to 40,000 lbs (178 kn) of explosive force. This force can quite easily make an inflated wheel a life-threatening device.

I was right about 95psi and was adding more when it blew.
