S2D's Build and Grow it BIG!

Hey everyone. Here we go. I have a new room that's basically 11x10. BIG difference from my 3x5 closet. If you've seen my closet adventures, you will know this is going to be a GREAT ride WIN or LOSE! :jump:

I am going to have to build a small partition in the corner of the room to make the pass through from the dining room door to the laundry room area closed off from the grow space. See pics and diagram below for a good explanation. This takes a corner of 3x4' out of the grow space, but I'm very happy with how this works out for the pass through to the laundry and garage from the main interior of the house.

I have the 2x4's, anchors, nails, screws, drywall, mud, tape, plywood for the exterior door that is being closed in (see diagram and pics) which is on a portion of exterior wall that is being resided anyway. I've got the switch boxes, switches, wire, etc to move the switches I need. I have a brand new 8,000 btu a/c unit I installed in the window yesterday to make working and growing easier. I'll add two layers of insulation board cut around the a/c to cover and seal the whole window cavity later. I have enough R-13 insulation to do the ceiling which is rafters covered by 3x8 plywood. It's cheap, but it's better than nothing, and I'll insulate the new partition wall as well as the wall along the laundry room since it's open cavities on the laundry side.

The condition of the room is pretty much how I found it, but with tons of my stuff piled in it instead of the junk the last owner filled it with. I own my own paint business, so this puppy will be nice and clean when I'm done...promise!

Lighting will be at least my two 400w hps and two 4' floro shoplights with 3 bulbs in each for side lighting or up top on each end. Not sure on their wattage. My good buddy electrician is installing the lighting at 240v as usual but configuration of lighting and number of buckets hasn't been decided.

What I'm missing:

I am FINALLY getting a water chiller!!! :jump: This puppy:

21_1.JPG

Model CL-280 specifications:
1/10 Horsepower
110 Volt
Dimensions: 12" x 12" x 13.5"
Flow GPH: 300 min/600 max gallons
BTU: 1,000
Weight: 40 lbs.

10 degree cooling up to 110 gallons
30 degree cooling up to 75 gallons

Also missing still: Primer and flat white paint. Some ducting, and plumbing for sure because that part is not set in stone, more insulation for the laundry wall, parts for carbon scrubber, and maybe some other minor things.

For ventilation I have my trusty 449 cfm vortex, but I want HELP on ventilation. I would like to pull fresh air in the room across the lights and out a carbon scrubber, but I don't want to exhaust all of my a/c either. How to bring in fresh co2, scrub the smell, and not suck out all my a/c is what I need to know. HELP ME HERE!

Ok...here's the layout and description. Room is full of crap, but is in condition I acquired it. I'm a professional painter with my own business, this will look MUCH cleaner when I'm done:

This is looking in from the dining room door across at window a/c:

This is the back door to be closed in (nasty looking stuff) :

And finally, this is looking toward the laundry pass through. Sheets keepin' a/c in the room for now:

Check it out, help me out with ventilation, and hang out for my big build and grow.

Looks like a great project.

If I were you I'd seal the room and throw some co2 in there. no AC lost that way. If you want to keep it a fresh air room then get a controler that turns your fan off when the ac is on but most people dont use ac for a fresh air room.

Also if you havn't ordered that chiller you should get th 1/4hp. they don't actually chill as much water as they say they can.

Anyways I'll be watchin the show. :lurk:

Hey J-Roc...time to push things up a notch!

Mid Town, I wish I could afford the co2 or the bigger chiller. Due to the build out my budget for the chiller is $400 tops. If you can show me the way to 1/4hp chiller shipped for that much, I'm sold.

I will probably only run 6-8 buckets tops anyway and grow some monsters, so if I use the a/c to keep the room cold and the chiller to give me a few degree drop, that little sucker should work eh?

I can pull a/c air from the house, through the room and across the lights and then through a scrubber to wherever like I did before, and with the room's own a/c I might just keep it cool enough.

One way or another I'll get there. Money is always my big issue, but I'm going to rely on a little ingenuity, some luck, and some help from the IC crowd!

Hmm.....looking through some other threads it seems I might just be forced to spend the extra money for a 1/4hp chiller.

I'm going to start some of the basic framing today, but there's a number of things that are waiting on electrical help from my buddy. I can get most of the insulation in the ceiling after removing the panels and do a couple other small things.

More updates as I have them.....

Why don't you just do the DIY chiller?? Home dePOT has those water

machines for around 89-100 bucks. Klutter built one, you should talk to him.

Save some extra cash. . . . .

StonedGrunt55  Hey man...I knew you'd find your way over here soon. Take a seat cause it's gonna get interesting.

PeavillePride Thanks for poppin in man! I'll take all the luck I can get when it comes to my grows! :smoke:

SensiMilla024 I'm actually already on my second water cooler deal. They work ok for small amounts of water, but I'm tired of overworking the little cooler and not being able to run many buckets. This will give me all I need for any future expansion or whatever whim I might have.

Ok, so a little update...My best friend the electrician was here tonight. We are running this show so smooth on the electrical side. We will have one dedicated 15amp circuit for the a/c itself, one dedicated 15 amp circuit for the fans and pumps, one dedicated 15 amp circuit for the flouro shop lights on their own 120v timer, and one dedicated 240v 30amp circuit to my "little grey box" water heater timer for the ballasts. The room also has the standard 15 amp circuit for all of the plugs which is separate and may be on another circuit with the dining room or somewhere else, but who cares, heh! :joint:

So, we're good on the JUICE for a 5,000 watt grow if I wanted, lol!! With lights, pumps, fans, chiller, etc we'll pull around 2,000 as it is I'm sure.

Also got some R-30 for the ceiling, and here's a pic of what we found inside of it. There was once a nest here that took up half the wall outside, and I guess what's in the rafters was left after the hornets were killed. This was a HUGE nest. I saw pics of how it was on the outside of the house before. Anyway, we'll put the R-13 in the walls and R-30 the ceiling before we put the plywood back up and put a texture over it.

Lookie!!

I know it sucks about the prices on water chillers but why spend $400 now and then another $600 when you realise that it doesn't chill enough or even if it does and you ever want to expand your system youll need to upgrade anyways. Plus the bigger one will not be working nearly as hard, which in turn should save on elecricity.

If you keep your ambient temps low and your only runnin 8 buckets you could probably get away with the 1/10hp but youll be pushin it.

Hornets huh?My aunt had a home that bee's took over the walls and made honey in there. She had three walls full of honey and bees for over 20 years.I got a lil care package come in last week.I now have a Dabney Blueberry,Tangerine Haze, and a 20 pack of Pacific's G-13 x Sour Diesel IBL to play with in the closet till it cools down a bit more here in Missouri.

On your fresh air question, why even worry about fresh air?Your a/c unit will do fine there, put some of the activated charcoal roll material they have at lowes in front of it where the crap filter thay have there now(if it is a new unit),and that will help some with the smell, plus your a/c will work easier without air exchange of warmer air.

Don't vent the room if it will stay at 68 to 70 degrees with the air, just have your scrubber run in room, very little smell inside, none outside.Logical?Just vent the light heat.Just an idea,I haven't been stoned in months so that may be clouding my logic.I have done it this way in an old leaky house with my mother in law 5 feet from a 6 foot Tangerine haze with just a hollow core door between her and it,and she never smelled a thing, and neither did I.

Room looks good, get er done! This is the stuff at lowes, put it on your air return in your house and it takes the odors out of your home, not just the grow, and if ya don't have an air return, use it in line on your light exhaust,it will take any residual smell out, it is like 6 bucks a roll. And you just wash and reuse. Also a good thing to make the scrubber from, get two rolls, and run your air thru that

Let's get some 6 footers in there! :rasta: And no hornets... :headbange

caligreen Hey!! Yup, hornets. The house is owned by a friend as an investment property and we are buying it. Some work we're doing for the appraisal is our down payment, but we have a year lease on it for now to do the work and get a couple runs in. This room will look like a little office on appraisal day! :joint:

MID TOWN I am convinced amigo! 1/4hp chiller it is! :headbange

outame 2 I've seen the big bee hives on some old renovation work. This was a monster on the outside that was removed, but I guess they left a big chunk in the rafters. Thanks for the heads up on that stuff. What is it, and where in lowes do I find it? Is it the thin carbon stuff? Good seeing you in here...I'll keep updating, there is a ton of work to do. :smoke:

outame 2-"MID TOWN,that there big bud says it does."

saying plants don't need any form of fresh air, or source of co2 is like saying plants dont need NITROGEN.

CO2 is VERRRY important.

S2D- you should just close the vent on your AC. no exhausted smells and no need for carbon cloth.

From the looks of it,it is an older house, and there will be plenty of air exchange.I have never used co2 and have always had heavy harvests. Now with 2000 watts in a climate controled shed, different story.

S2D,how many you gonna try to do this first run?I have my room ready, just waiting for a little cooler temps before putting mine in.

I'm just about ready...

you don't actually have to add CO2 you just need fresh air that contains co2.

It looks to me like you have an exhaust therefor your bringing fresh air in from somewhere. either that or your room is completely depreasurized.lol

Even if it is an old house with cracks. A few pasive cracks here and there arn't gonna provide him with proper fresh air.

fresh air has about 350-400ppm of co2 in it. optimum levels of co2 for growth are 1800ppm and if there's no intake the plants will use up the co2 and lower it down well past even the fresh air level(200-100ppms) which obviously isn't a good idea.

If you can come up with an arguement that plants DON'T need CO2 and get anyone to agree with you I'll bow down and kiss your feet.
