risk a truck or buy a prius?

yes smart choice, i believe they have good re-sale value.. can it really pull a boat though?
absolutely not. It can store a kayak on top, though. And on less slippery ramps, i can deal with a jon boat.
How tall are you? At 6 feet I find the Prius to be cramped. 15 minutes around town is fine. More than 30 minutes becomes uncomfortable. Cross country borders on painful.
i am 5 10. I don't find the Prius to be an uncomfortable ride. But then, I'm graduating from the luxurious and classy Honda Civic. If I were coming from 10 years of driving a Jaguar, I'd imagine it would be a much more traumatic shift.

errr no. Prius gets 50 mpg. 44-46 in the winter driving like an animal in my experience. Golf gets half that, and diesel costs 40 cents or more per gallon. I agree that is much more fun to drive, however.

I have ranger 621 vs ambitions. In fact I had bought one and then returned it for warranty reasons (attempted scam by a dealership. PM me if you're curious who. Shady kunts have been reported and I'm considering a class action).

Thanks for your opinion here. Although I love fishing, I decided to keep it on shore and from the kayak. I simply can't square all this extra money in the pockets of the oil companies. I decided upon the Prius. I like the stability of knowing that even if gas prices go insane, my pocket will stay relatively unchanged.

As others have mentioned in passing, the alpha male in me digs a truck and has second thoughts of a Prius. Alas, the challenge of fighting of a musky in a kayak seems a bit manly, I must say.:)

My Tdi gets 1000kms/55ltrs of diesel combined and has done for 5 years. That works out to 42.8mpg which isn't far off what you are achieving.

Factor in the cost of replacing the batteries on the prius at some point and I'm damn sure you'll be far better off with the Golf.

As for towing the boat, the 2.0Tdi will tow 1200kgs up a 15degree incline and accelerate up it; ask me how I know that :dance013:

i have a big ol truck for towin and a gas saver....been drivin the gas saver more lately...multiple spaceships is the way to go.

also docking is expensive!! you can park your boat at certain storage facilities for like 100 bucks a month....then just tow it out whenever you want to go boating.

deisel engine is the way to go,until somone phases out the fossil fule thing.
they last longer
multiple fuel sources
a truck is the swiss army knife of the coices if fuel isnt of concern.and can pay for itself(plus add-ons that make it fuel efficiant.
i had a 97 f350 xlt crewcab (full size 4 door) it was a gasser but i loved it.
and im searching for another but deisel now.
why do i think this will be a good choice, well its actaully simple it will last during economic and eviormental challenges.plus protection from idiots.if my bumbers are the size of the guardrails,i wish they would have been more carfull.
do i feel bad if it does come to that yes but ive been in enough accidents to know buying less would leave me hurting in anoter crash.
and i dont drive that much and theres 2 tanks in there so i buy the cheap fuel now and the expensive stuff later if i have too.
theres so many up sides.
a concept to keep in mind is the less options you have the less there is to go wrong.
just my 2cents

Until they phase out the internal combustion engine I'll continue to run a diesel. It is a little more expensive then unleaded petrol in these parts but we are talking 1.30/ltr compared with 1.40/ltr.

Not to play the role of the annoying environmentalist, but from a environmental perspective I would agree with smokingjoe and buy a small diesel car for half the price of a Prius. The Prius is being billed as an environmentally-conscious car, but if you look at the entire life cycle of the car, including the energy involved in the manufacturing and disposal of the batteries, it's more damaging to the environment than many SUVs.
Besides, if you buy a small diesel car for much cheaper than a truck or a Prius, then you'll have plenty of money left over for a small boat. Best of both worlds!

here in the US they don't sell small diesel cars
if they did they would be very expensive

we have a 3 series BMW diesel sold here, as far as I know thats it other than trucks and commercial vehicles

forgot they started selling Diesel VWs here again, they maybe an option
not as cheap as a Prius but a better car

Honda is starting to sell a Fit hybrid in the US

Forget about the the truck/car, let's talk about what is really important.

... What boat are you looking to buy?

My preference is blue water steel or fiberglass monohull sailboats with a ketch rig (preferably).... something in the low 30's for length ...so I can still single hand her . find anything on yachtworld.com you like yet? Does your boat need to be trailerable?

boat. boat . boat. close to the beach ? get a prius, and a slip to dock your boat. no truck needed.

but if you cant dock it, fuck the prius. Theres nothing like a good day out on the water :)

edit: saw you said something about a kayak ? get a hobie, great for fishing, foot paddles. i take mine out and have no problem picking up whiteseabss and yellowtail.

Most rental companies prohibit towing with their vehicles. Check the contract. You damage a rental while towing, the LDW wont cover the damage.
If you want to look like a douche nozzle, get the Prius.

You fill up the Toyota Prius once a week and get 50mpg.
You fill up the Chevy Volt once a month and get 111mpg.

dont get the prius unless gas gets to like 6 dollars or something....didnt see anyone mention the fact that once the batteries go on the prius its 4k for new ones, also maintenance will probably be more involved and more complicated to do yourself. also, and most importantly,
its a pussy car

Crazy on the prius! I got a 2008 Silverado in 2008 when gas was 4.25+ It was expensive then, but gas mileage is getting better and better on these trucks.

Go get a Silverado you'll never regret it, my only regret is getting a standard work truck... wish I coulda spent a bit more and got the crew cab 4x4 or at least extended cab. I love my truck... never go back to a car for everyday driver again! Just muscle cars for summer.
