I flip males, sniff their pollen, loupe them, stem rubs etc. but really I know his parents so well so when you have say ten males or whatever to choose from it’s easier to differentiate what’s best; sometimes your hand gets forced too with slim pickings for males or herm ones - working with SE Asian lines heavily past 5 years really teaches you you can’t always be so picky. In the end assuming we know what’s going to pop out is a bit much, but statistically we try & push towards a direction the best we can then it’s a numbers game, & growing out progeny…

If you begin with great genetics, both parents you’re stacking the odds heavily in your favor :)

I’m going to do a full progeny run early next year from my latest batch and that male with elongated flower has reshaped lots of the females I have thrown at it in the past 2 years. I’m curious to see it with the Chaing Mai another SEA and the Colombian SMG.

I may focus my observation on the males coming out of all the crosses to see how dominant that elongated flower is as I wish to bulk it up with out losing sativa/narrowleaf dominance.

Another question (if I may and thanks for the answers);
Have you found very resinous males within the SEA lines you have worked with?
I haven’t found it on my Filipino Geno (a high resine profile), I have found other great things but not a resinous one. Are high resin phenos a thing in SEA expressions??

I like when I can see traits from the parents across genotypes.

Deathstar x Assam Hashplant; getting into week 5ish (I think). Smells like ramen chicken spice packs and hot trash in the sun.

Josh D OG x Assam Hashplant; getting into week 3ish. Smells spicy and bitter.

10 million seeds ,
hmmm i dunno about that unless u have like 100 plus kg of seed ,
typically depending on seed size of course ,, anywhere between 40 to 80 000 is a kilo of cannabis seed,, some even tiny ones might be slightly more ,
but even the tiny ones ,, @ a possible , 100 000 per kilo , you guys can do the maths of course ...

for a better idea of amount ,, just weigh them ,, then weigh 100 or 1000 , u can get a close figure ...

Highly resinous large pointy elongated calyx…especially the Laotian have the exaggerated pointiness

One thing with males I think that’s often overlooked is once you find a great one think how much work he can put in easily, like a stud in most any breeding programs

Perhaps I may have got carried away some - probably closer to 50-60lbs seed but I have done the count / weight thing on the scales before and the numbers were higher than the ones above, did you do those yourself or pull them from somewhere? As you know most are fairly small seeds, on average.

I remember the SMG were like 200/gram whereas the big bubba were more like 40/gram…

Either way it’s a shit ton of seed brother! You finally back in Oz?

Edit: This plate is a big dinner plate & @2cm deep, how many you think are here? How many do you think fit in a pint jar? I’ve filled so many pint jars & plates like these…

When I google hemp seed / lb I get 25-30K range but that seems low to me, hemp seed my wife buys at health food stores is normally a lot larger than most seed I make, the plate above is large seed, some the largest I’ve made - half of its lineage came from males I selected on of seeds you shared with me in fact

hahah , yea im not counting them either man honestly ,
i sell a few bulk ones locally and i might count 500 or 1000 ,
just like 5 at a time using a teaspoon to shift them around ,
but im cheating after that ... a kilo of the seed i made a while back seemed like heaps , but i didnt count them , the numbers i was mentioning i recall sam throwing around some time back and it sounded close enough for me ,, lol ..
could be a bit of give and take for sure ...

i am home enjoying the humidity during the storm season man ,
the opposite of your of course hot and humid vs dry and cold ,
the vegetable garden is not so happy about it , many things died off while i was away,
its time for ginger and tumeric , sweet potatoes , etc , ill have to get some sweet potatoes going , i really like those sweet orange ones , u can do anything u can do with normal potatoes , but they are much sweeter , possibly healthier , at a guess ...

have a great xmas mate ,
enjoy the time with the family ,
i know i dont have to tell you , but enjoy the food , hahaha ..

i have some average sized teaspoons ,, just ones for making tea , not measured ones ,
a not overly heaped one of those , just rounded ,, is around 1000 average seeds i find ,
again give or take , but often quite close ... i use it for a guide when im asked to get a few thousand together ....

Id say sweet potatoes are quite a bit healthier (especially the purple Korean ones) and store so easily @ here once cured vs regular spuds…. This is our to be used soon bin, this year they grew SO deep, long & thin, it was very hot & dry in the GH they were in, perhaps in part why, really the season is too short here but we try

Just made my own "special" malawi as well, I crossed a tlt malawi gold female with 2 rsc malawi gold males.

Mine is a 3-way Malawi Gold. Pedigree is explained here.

Sounds amazing, I'd love to get my hands on an old pack of African seeds malawi gold. I grew ace, TLT, and rsc malawi gold plants this year, they have all been quite impressive so far, needing more cure time.I will be running more.

The last two of my late planted Super Silver Sour Thai Nevil x ThaiFrican girls.
Thanks to @ojd for the beans of their parents.

The Thicc Girl pheno, probably showing more of the SSSDH from mom SSSTN.

And we cannot forget the Thai pheno, with Thai from both sides of the cross
Showing a really strong sativa flowering structure, not to mention strong crystal build up

Some beautiful crazy flower branching in there!
If you can see beyond those little single leaflet leaves, look inside...

and if we open her up a little...

She's going to be weeks to months more at this rate.
While that means deeper into winter, the temps are already hitting winter lows.
And neither of these two ladies seems bothered by that.
It will be the cold + wet that may provide the challenge.

Their mom went into middle of February during my first season at this location.
I think both these girls will be finished before then.
Well, Thicc Girl pheno at least, Thai pheno... who knows?!
And the two Grail project girls went into March that season, too, without much problem.

So please don't worry too much about me doing winter harvests here!
