Dang! I was not paying attention well enough. I have been looking for something early ripening as a breeding tool for my project. I just pulled the trigger on Baglung Nepali a couple of days ago. Sounds like Purple Satellite would have been a very viable if not preferred alternative. Baglung Nepali is somewhat of a blind guess for what would be best for me. I find descriptions of highs lacking. The site I bought from doesn't even have clear ripening dates for outdoor growing at various latitudes. I'm only guessing that something from Nepal with it's high altitude mountains and acclimated in Switzerland would be very early.

I'm amazed at your reported ripening dates. How much of that is from the Nepali, and how much is from the Oaxacan? Can you compare and contrast the highs from Nepali vs. Oaxacan? What is the high like from the cross?

I know many people don't feel the differences in the highs of various weed like I do. I also am not sure what people mean with the language they use. This is my problem. I like to read/hear different ways to describe something so I get confident in my understanding. This is one reason why I'm long winded and prefer lots of detail in descriptions. One has to be a hell of a good poet to capture a feeling or complex thought in very few words. I digress (repeatedly).

Many people think all highs are basically similar. I think the highs of most hybrids are all too similar, but IMHO, good strains, hybrids or not, stand out for the uniqueness of the highs. Personally, I'm an aficionado of clear, clean, cerebral highs that remind me of tripping. I think some people describe this as a "cold" high. Strangely though, highs that some say are cold thrill me to the point of euphoria. Hahaha. Maybe just because they are so rare, I'm very happy to find them. I do shy away from highs that are too introspective. I like highs where I "lose myself" and look outward. If I understand correctly, people might call those "expansive" (mind expanding?) highs. To me, hash plant highs are not like tripping at all. Not mind expanding, not trippy, not introspective, not psychedelic, not clear... more mind numbing. I find some sativa highs are psychedelic and are a much more controllable way to gently trip than acid, psilocybin, or peyote.

Vermontman - Can you take some time to write up something descriptive of the highs of each, Oaxacan, Nepali, and Purple Satellite, with my perspective of highs in mind? Perhaps you can use it for Dubi's website. Also, what are the ripening dates of each? Where did such an early ripening date come from?

These early dates used to be much more common. Everything is hybridized these days, and it is hard to find really early indicas anymore, much less cerebral sativas. I do expect some compromise in the high to get the early ripening dates. I have come across only a very few with the high I most prefer that are especially early ripening in my lifetime. I do hope to find a strain with a very early ripening date that lacks couch-lock, and leans in the direction of the high I'm breeding for.

Thanks,

ThaiBliss

have some nepalese on they way myself , saw a documented grow on the repro elsewhere ....looks snazzy .
sounds like you would like zamal x malawi (not mine ) reports back was a super clear high and very clean and light. you'd likely struggle to finish something like that though.
I think you may be on the right path with the Nepal , lots bling to them also ( colour )

Imo the relationship between flowering time and the cerebral highs you describe is correlative and not causal. Its down to hundreds of years of selection. In Mediterranean mountain regions they require fast flowering and cold tolerance while selecting for hash production and narcotic effects. Where tropical locations require open flowers and resistance to mold & mildew while selecting for flowers and highs used more for spiritual/social purposes.

So i agree that hybridization to shorten flowering time normally compromises the high and one should focus on the longer flowering varieties if that is what theyre after. At the same time i dont think theyre inherently linked. The high is linked to the chemotype and subsequently the genes responsible for the production of enzymes needed for biosynthesis of certain cannabinoids & terpenes that result in genotypes capable of these effects. The only way it would be linked is if the biosynthesis its self takes more steps/time to synthesize

I believe, over a long period of time, one could breed varieties for a combo of clear cerebral highs and faster flowering. 11-13 weeks would be a fair compromise and realistic goal imo

Hello Thai!
Well that is a mouth full, but Ill do my best,
First it seems most people are looking for the mind numbing couch lock, which I really don't get unless you need asleep aid. But I like to breed strains that are more energy inducing.
especially for recreational use.
But to your Question The Nepali comes in one of the earliest, the high of the Nepali is a bit on the top of your head not super clear but a bit cerebral , with a light body stone. I would say the potency is moderately good. My Oaxacan if grown outdoors used to come in by mid Oct, and be finished nicely when I lived near the coast with warmer temps there. but since I have been growing her in the mountains where the average daily temps are about ten degrees cooler, though stronger UV, from the altitude, I now have to bring her in to finish her up to my liking. Her high is immediate pure sativa, in 1979 when I got her we nick named her Skullfuck
because she hit immediately and powerfully right between your eyes, in the center of your forehead not in an annoying way but more warming and comfortable, then the high became more cerebral and thought provoking. I pulled out a bud this past Fall at a dinner party, It was a four year cure primo Oax bud, I break out for special occasions. there were about ten of use around a large picnic table on the deck overlooking the forest. Within minutes of smoking a descent sized joint. Conversation started to pick up, I could see the collective energy all around the table. The most striking thing to occur to me after that was watching the robust conversation turn to gut busting laughter. It brought me back to the seventies.
Purple Satellite seems to be an annomily, starting to Come in just a bit earlier than The Oax, I think it's more that the Oax thickens up the buds in the cross allowing Satellite to come in and still be adequate in terms of density and the intense sun of such an early plant seems to develop a slightly more potent plant than either of their parents.

Oddly enough we had the wettest cloudiest warmest summer on record and my friends had already suggested, that the Satellite seemed more potent this year. So I can only imagine her in a very sunny warmer Fall. Satellites high is also immediate, a bit on the top of your head but with a warming body calm. A buddy of mine was sent to the market by his wife, which was in a plaza to pick up items After they smoked Satellite, after wandering around the store for a few minutes they realized they couldn.t remember what they were looking for then realized hey were in the wrong store, his nephew said my bud PURPLE SATELLITE and the stood there in laughter.

Even though the the Oaxacan and Satellite seems to bring on a DUH effect it till holds heavily motivational factors and is also great for enhancing social interactions. I beleive the high you seek may be in these in part, if engaged in a meditative situation.
One of many things I do agree with you on is the IBL in bred lines of landrace strains or pure landrace do carry some of the most unique qualities inherit in great cannabis, that cannot be measured by simple potency, and may even by many seem lacking. Though I do breed for potency, I try hardest to instill the uniqueness of the varieties I am breeding with and introducing to the public, in seed form.
I hope this even comes close to answering your query.

Earlier I posted OAXACAN GOLD X MULANJE GOLD
Grown by a friend in San Francisco But I was not able to finish that cross in my colder climate.
The Mulanje is a 9.5 to 10 week Landrace Sativa which pushed up the finish date past what is available in my climate.

But oddly enough The Oaxacan X Hawaiian sativa cross did come in at an acceptable date and with acceptable quality on Sept 30th at 42 degree latitude.

Oax X HA comes in end of Sept 42 degrees N

Keeping in mind
The HAWAIIAN SATIVA is an 10 to 12 week lady

Below pictured is OAX X HA Finished indoors.
Though I did not photograph outdoor plants I did take shots of the plants I finished indoors in 2011. This may be what you are looking for Thai, though I cannot describe the high with accuracy I do remember the HA bringing in a good amount of sweetness to the cross, and HA is very introspective top of your head with great clarity.

I plan on redoing this cross and making seed available for
Fall 2019

HEY MEX!
Awesome you could pull the original listing up.
Very pretty plant!
The potency is descent and yield is OK, super early but not super dense.
I think best as a breeding tool or personal stash of someone wanting something slightly calmer,
Hope you don't mind me including

Thick, thick girl for a tropical hybrid...

She ended up smelling "meaty", a 1st for me growing, smoking, etc. Great line here, for the patient growers out there, definitly some good plants to be found in this cross

Vermontman - Thanks for your post. You did me right. Much appreciated. I feel good about selecting the Baglung Nepali due to the cross you made being successful. I'm glad it did not detract from your Oaxacan. I want to try the Purple Satellite also. LOL More seeds than time...
