over the years my mom would send me care packages from NY to MN, she always included a toy or two for Alice & Kayla (before Scooby), whenever a box would arrive my dogs would be @ my heels waiting for new toys & maybe some biscuits or chewies.
my mom's been gone for 4 years now but Alice still gets excited about boxes although none have stuff for her anymore, yesterday I changed that when a box arrived full of doggie stuff I ordered online including 2 new Flippy Flopper frisbees.
like Christmas in October, Alice was all jacked up, Scooby however was nonplussed by the whole thing even though I got her a couple of tough chew toys.......
I've been wondering what it would take to have Scooby feel the need to defend me, tonight my friends rottweiler would prove to be that catalyst. as I was sitting in my walker outside on my driveway that rottie wouldn't stop bouncing off me, my friend laughed saying "that's what he does!"
Scooby was getting pissed off though, she really didn't like that dog being between us & I told Rob that, I think he thought the size difference would matter somehow, he had a silly grin on his face. Scooby came unhinged going after Connors head & ears, not latching on but scoring bites on every lunge, that dumb fucker then tried to hide under my walker as I was still sitting in it. Rob grabbed his dogs collar when he had a moment to do so & hustled him into his car.
We parted laughing about it but Scooby was lavished with praise then a bowl of food w/meat & egg treats once we got inside.......
I'm so lucky to have Scooby & Alice in my life.

Owners complained about not being house trained, getting into the garbage, not listening to anyone... basically a problem dog. Without going into more detail, the plan (as always) was to get the animal healthy and happy again and re-home it. We've done that with a number of animals over the years.
Love that dog... totally awesome. Some people just shouldn't have animals.
Been feeding him and the family's been treating him like we treat all animals and he's fully adopted us now. Total teddy bear, pushover, patient with kids, highly tolerant of other animals with personality/social issues... freaking scary when we've been approached threateningly or when people open the door without warning.
Listens, super intelligent, doesn't need a leash, doesn't get in fights with other dogs, chases lasers and flashing lights with interest, only shows interest in garbage when we're lax in feeding for a while (lol)... chases rabbits but will stop if told to. Totally awesome dog.

great to hear CG, I'm sure his behavior issues were due to the previous owners shortcomings. some folks just don't understand dogs as well as others.

and so Scooby came unhinged on Alice again tonight, very vicious sounding but my immediate intervention never allows it to go anywhere. the last episode was 5/28/13 which is keeping it 'as usual' a couple of times a year.
My back was turned but I believe Alice was lying still near my pillows and Scooby was on the move to claim them, I've caught Scooby sitting on Alice very recently and so this might have been building up this past week; Alice is so mellow, I know she's not antagonizing Scooby in any way.
It's been 7 months since her last transgression, I was actually just starting to believe I could bring another dog into my home but now I'm going to have to wait it out another year or so to see if Scooby's behavior changes.

Scooby is trying to prove he`s top dog & every now & then will push it . Keep a very careful eye on him coz little Alice is gonna get hurt if it goes to shit
I know how wearing it can be when a dog is unpredictable , my AB attacked me 4 times in 5yrs & the last one sealed her fate . There is not a day goes by when I don`t think of her & miss her & wish she`d never had that flip switch coz I lost a mostly loving lovely dog .

sounds to me that she may be the problem and instigator...a dog that is too passive and unsure of themselves and where they place in the hierarchy will often trigger an agressive/dominant dog to try and take #1 spot...and often us humans dont help with the way we treat the one being attacked...cesar milan said it best...

this is a great example of what im talking about when the dog who is unsure of themselves are the instigator...not the agressor, but the instigator...
if your dog attacked you thats fucked...i treat my dogs like i am the alpha male in the dog pack, not like i am human...they wouldnt think twice about attacking me...once my pitt bit my hand while playing Frisbee..the second he landed on the ground he rolled over before i could even scold him, he knew he did wrong, and was begging for forgiveness immediately...
my house is me and my 2 kids(the dogs)...and my house is based on dominance...they know im top dog, they are very happy to be my subordinate...like pirates, dogs choose their pack leader, they like someone strong, firm, with discipline, but also fair...
I don`t care how good you think you are with dogs but even the pack leader can get bit if there is a problem from previous abuse , she was a rescue & you know fuck all about her or the circumstances of the attacks .
I`ve had dogs for over 50yrs including bull terriers , pitbull x , EBM x rottie/pit & DDB & never had a problem with any of them so I think my CV is pretty good .

Alice is usually sleeping near the pillows when she's been attacked, so not the instigator by even any stretch of the definition. Scooby's a rescue dog and her previous history is unknown and therefore somewhat unpredictable, her indiscretions occur about twice a year w/out warning and so there's no behavior for me to correct.
The reason I'm looking to introduce another dog into the pack is because I see how much Scooby loves & relies on Alice's companionship; I'm fairly certain that all of you have seen the many pictures of Scooby & Alice together on the bed, I can assure you that it's Scooby snuggling up into Alice 95% of the time.
Anyways, Alice turned 11 this month and I'd like to introduce new blood into the pack while Alice is alive & in good health, Alice instills good household habits; to intro another dog in my home when Alice is in declining health would be cruel to her, I'd much rather have a newcomer in place asap.
Alice still grooves on catching and fetching her frisbee daily, we use the Flippy Flopper frisbees because the fabrics softer on her mouth, whereas she used to catch most throws she's now slowed down a bit but is still enthusiastic about the routine

how are the energy levels of the ones you own now?
do they get excited easily at all?
my first thought would be for your choice to be a rott, or mastiff..simply because of their character, ive never met one that wasnt a big lazy guy, lol...but they are great with smaller animals to my experience...my rottie mix, loves all smaller dogs, he will roll around on his back and try and instigate play, but when the smaller dogs are agressive(friend has 2 pomeranians) he knows how to act, same goes with my cats...
one place i do have to watch out with my dogs is with toys, only toys...my rottie mix has hip probs and a bad heart, so he can only do so much but loves to play fetch...my pitt loves to play fetch too, but he has to be #1, he has soo much drive he will do anything to get the frisbee, and the bigger guy sees this and will drop it right then and there and let the pitt bring it back...but if they are both in the run for it, my rottie will get agressive and try and growl viciously to warn the pitt not to touch it, the pitt will run past it and let the rottie get it, but then comes back to steal it away...so i have to let them take turns when playing fetch....i never let one of them dominate the other, i always get involved same as the alpha would, because he is the one who settles disputes...that being said when the mother of my pitt comes over, she is alpha over my dogs, but she knows i am alpha, even over her owner, lol
its cool no appology needed, wont cry over spilt milk...sometimes its hard to get the "vibe" a person is on from their txts or written message...as long as we understand eachother then thats what matters
